Some questions coming from a WoW player

Reggy86Reggy86 Member Posts: 2

Hey there, I just quit WoW and I was wondering if I could get some info about EvE from new & veteran players alike. Let's start with the more general questions: what do you like in EvE, and what do you dislike (there must be something! ;).
Now, for the more precise ones, let's say I really liked WoW, but the whole repetitive raiding stuff got me bored, and I couldn't get myself to level up another character to 60: the universe is great, don't get me wrong, but after you have seen it once, you aren't surprised anymore, and you get bored from doing the same quests all over again, grinding that damn reputation to spend all your hard-earned money on a great item that only improves your character's dps by 1%; that leads me to the question: is EvE repetitive to the point of becoming boring? Sure you can do the NPC missions, mine, hunt, do PvP, but do you get the feeling that you're accomplishing something useful?
Also, can I become familiar with EvE without having to play 16 hours a day? Can I find good RP corps that can show me all aspects of the game, including the famous 0.0 space?

If I think of other questions, I'll post them here. :)

Thank you for reading.

Eve is not WoW. I tried WoW, it was fun and had clear appeal but I couldn't bring myself to go to a store and cough up for it. If they had a key purchase program I might have played more but I had no trouble 25 capping my toon in the 2 weeks they gave me. I didn't mind killing crabs for a week though so I don't know if I am of much use to your idea of 'fun'.

Eve is like any game that way. You will get to see the repetition. L1 to L5 missions are alot of the same only bigger. There are uniques in all levels but they are few and far between. Any way you slcice it, if you are new you will be a long time running short of things to do. Even in .5 and up there are enough complexes to keep you busy for quite some time.

Hmm, what I like about EVE. Well, EVE more often than not is new every day. New challenges, new goals, or just another day in the pursuit of those goals. EVE is very open ended, has a lot of freedom of play. It's very PVP oriented (particularly in 0.0 space), and that can be fun and exciting. There have been wars that have decided the ownership of regions that have gone on for months or even years and I've been in a few of them. The political intrigue, the personal relationships and working together for mutual enrichment. All this and more is why EVE is the only MMO I still play (I've also played COH/COV, GW, and AA)

What I don't like. Well, sometimes this game is a lot like work. Things can take a LONG time. Like I'm the POS (Player Owned Station) Director of my corp and I'm responsible for maintaining the POS we run. That can take awhile, doing the hauling, buying components and fuel and setting up courier missions to get the stuff to where I want it (which is a time saver, you pay people to do the hauling for you and I've been very happy with the results.) Putting up the POS, taking down POS, hauling fuel in, hauling reactions out. I do get help from my wonderful corp members, but still, it sometimes takes more time that I want it to. But the rewards should be great.

And sometimes I do lvl 4 missions (the highest you can do right now). The rewards are good but sometimes they are HARD. You have to go thorugh it over and over if you find that they are overwhelming your tank. Well, they were originally meant for more that 1 person, but people have found ways to do them solo. My fault really, I had the wrong ship for the job. But with the right ship and/or right setup, they rewards are great.

But in general, my biggest complaint is that sometimes things in EVE just take way too long. I feel guilty spending so much time in front of my PC sometimes.

This is dependent on you finding your niche. To put it bluntly, EVE is a love it or hate it game. There is little middle ground there. When you look at the map and space (which is pretty nice btw, but sameish as time goes on) you may see bountiful oppourtunites and challenges, or you may just see a dull endless void.

Some things about EVE can be a little repetitive. There is the ever INFAMOUS task of mining. I personally like it, it's relaxing and I can do other things (that is key). But you don't have too. The PvE missions (not a strong suit for EVE compared to GW or WOW) don't have too much uniqueness, it's sister ratting, which is pretty much killing random spawns at gates and belts. But they are a means to an end. I like PvE missions because they are hard and challenging, plus they have some substantial rewards, and again it's sister ratting has even more substaintial rewards. When I was new there was a period when I got a real kick just picking up abandoned jet cans from rats, and finding some nice pieces of loot. Which I sold or used.

You can make a lot of money selling named loot and refining the loot you don't need into minerals can be a viable means of building ships and equipment for sale.

PVP is never boring, particuarly fleet engagements. I could probably tell you hundreds of examples how battles have decided the fate of corps, alliances and even regions. PVP is VERY meaningful in EVE, but also can be painful.

16 hours? You don't have to play that long to become familiar with EVE.

EVE University Recruitment Thread Join this corp to start out, be sure to do the tutorial and the missions of your first tutorial agent. They will help you learn the game.

    RP corps...why yes!!!

    RP Corps shortlist

    Interstellar Summit RP Forum

Plus the alliance political forums. A lot of stuff goes on between entities that own their own chunk of space.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your time in EVE, hope this helps.

Thank you for your answers! I'm currently downloading the client (86%, can't wait :).

So a big part of the game is PvP. I really don't have any problem with that, since I love it (as long as it doesn't get boring like WoW (I know I keep going back to it, but it's my only MMORPG experience)). Now, how much time do I have to spend in leveling up my skills and getting new ones until I can do something in PvP? I mean until I can be effective. Which skills would be most important?

I have my eyes on Minmatar (sp?) for now. Are they a good choice for a new player? Their background is pretty interesting and could be a good RP start.
Only thing is that I didn't find any character creation guide. What skills should I focus on (apart from the Learning ones) and in which order?

EDIT: I guess it would help to tell you that I want to be make a combat type character, but still be effective in other areas like a "jack of all trades" that's a little more familiar with combat. Hope that helps! :)

The thread above - "How to have a fun trail" might be a good place to start. But it's focus is on pirating.

Also, on the EVE site there is the EVE New Citizens Q&A Forum

But above all. JOIN EVE UNIVERSITY! They can show you. I know what my stuff does but there are well over a hundred ship components and the skill system is complex. This game has a learning curve, and I hear it's steep.

Pretty much what you should do is specialize in a particular field, since you have intersted in PVP, that would be a good place to start.

As far as your choice in character. The Minmatar is a good start (and they have a interested in game RP alliance Ushra Khan among others) But, pick a history and above all A FACE that you can live with. You can fly whatever you want.

For example, I'm a Minmatar Seibestor that can fly Minmatar, Gallentee, and Amarr Battleships (oh so begrudingly), and virtually every tech 1 ship below that. Each one has it's strengths and weaknesses, and you pick one that fits your play style.

Feel free to send me a convo, and I'll try to help you out.

    God Bless

Just remember one thing mate, don't try to take on other peoples goals and make them your own. More often than not, you will find that what other people want, is boring to you. For example, a miner might tell you that mining is good money, but you might find it boring to do and end up hating the game for it. Take a couple weeks to explore what the game has to offer, read the forums, talk to vets and after you know you have a fair idea of what the game is, join a good corp.

A good corp is quite often the difference between quitting the game in disgust and sticking around for years. The game is a sandbox just remember that, there isn't any npc that is going to tell you what to do and where to go. Do your own thing and have fun. Good luck.

i agree with the former post, there is so much to do any given person is bound to find something they enjoy to do. I recommend getting into a corp even into an alliance early, the more immersersed you get the more fun the game will be play and the easyer it will be.

There's really loads to do on this game, as this game allows you to create your own thing that the game wasn't even designed for. I think the most fun i've had is being a Merc. but that's just me.

This is what's kept me playing the game, if i got bored of something i'd do something else and it's that easy to change.

What i don't like about EVE though, is the way a lot of people are making money. The really rich people on EVE are those that are creating characters, learning them lots of skills and then selling them on the forums, which is all legal. There are also those that buy timecards and sell them for EVE Money, all these people are making billions and can lose the best ships, with the best mods, and the best guns and they couldn't care less. If they decide to war you, you're in big trouble if you're poor.

Keep in mind that EVE's "single shard" universe has resulted in one of the most tightly knitted communities of all the MMOs.  Therefore your primary out-of-game interface with the community will be the EVE-Online forums.  There are a ton of player developed resources which can be also be found from the forums...such as territoral maps, alliance diplomacy charts, recruitment for corporations, EVE's true "auction house", and player produced videos.  In addition, the forums also act as the primary means of communicating out-of-game with other players.

Always turn to the forums if you can't get help in game.  There are a ton of resources available and more importantly, EVE's history is document throughout the forum.

One thing i can name that i like off the top of my head the skill training system i dont have 10 hours a day to play eve i have a job. The skill system really works for those with limited time.

Another thing i like the PvP is a lot of fun once you know what you are doing.

Thing i hate well i guess i could say i hateStrip miners.

Eve isant repetative  its a 5000 system game with vast stretches of it run by player made alliances full of political intregue and war. You can break those alliances if you wanted to. Tho it wont be easy

I play on average 4 hours a day and im familuar.

Yep each race has some roleplay corps thoi dont do roleplay yet. [im caldari thats why]

I have been playing Eve since beta and I still haven't come close to doing all the things available to me. Eve is a living virtual universe. YOU make the limits.
