Newbie questions...

I'm playing a necro on a classic server and I'm really confused about a couple of things...

1)  What exactly do staffs do for me?  Chance to hit? Chance to crit? Damage?  I make sure to buy them with my specific focus line (aka a __ wand of deathsight) but i'm not really sure what they do.

2)  My friend (who has played before) thought that anyone could get into darkness falls, but it tells us that we don't own enough keeps to get in?  Do we literally have to wait until our nation owns more keeps than enemies before we can enter this zone?  How does this whole system work?

Thanks for the info.  Btw i'm level 30 in 1 day /played my first time ever on DAOC =]

    A followup question:

This past night me and a friend (another necro) were in a battleground at level 29 (max level for this BG) and we broke down the walls of the keep and cleared all the mobs except the commander, then tried to kill her 2v1... but she was purple and we would literally miss our mana drain spell until we were out of mana and then she would shoot us through walls with her bow and kill us.

How is it physically possible to kill these stupid things if you can't hit them?  I tried reducing her con, reducing her armor factor, nothing worked...

Also note i'm playing the trial version so is that going to cause any issues with getting into the Darkness Falls dungeon thing?

+spell line (Suppression: 1pts, for example) gives little better chance to not get outright resists and increases the damage of the spells by small amount. Focus bonus reduces the power(mana) cost of the spells in that line up to the level the staff shows.

Your realm must own more towers than anyone else to enter Darkness Falls, indeed. Type /rw or press ctrl+M to see the realm map, click "BONUSES" to see how many keeps, towers and relics your realm has.

You are not supposed to kill the keep guys that easily :p Higher the level, harder to hit. That's why a bigger group is needed as someone will always hit him.

The most important thing about staves is that it hs focus bonus on it.  If you do not have that, any spell cast will cost 20% more.  Staves also give magical bonuses.  Pluses to your spell line decrease your damage varience.

/realm will tell you who owns DF I believe.  Your realm needs to own more of the towers than any other realm for it to open up.  If you loose towers (and DF) you will not be kicked out, but other realms can come in and kill you.

Killing the commanders takes more than 2 people.  I would say at least 1FG depending on what classes you have available.

So for instance right now I believe i'm using a Heartwood Staff of Deathsight and when i click INFO it says "Deathsight: 17 points" i believe... this means it will reduce the mana cost of all deathsight spells which are at or under level 17?

Does the less chance to be resisted and the damage increase count for spells over this level?  Because my deathsight is already at 30 and it would thus seem useless to have such a small level on my staff (which was yellow when i bought it a couple levels ago)?

Thanks again for answering newbie questions =] still trying to get used to this game!

Focus bonus only reduces power cost. As you look at the info it might say

    Intelligence: 4pts
    Deathsight: 1pts

    Focus Bonuses
     Deathsight: 17 lvls

The Deathsight listed with normal stats or resists increases the damage and reduces chance to get outright resists. When you look at the panel with all your spell lines and abilities you would see Deathsight line written in yellow and would say "Deathsight 30 +1".
The Deathsight under Focus Bonuses is the one that reduces power cost of all Deathsight spells lvl17 or under as you guessed.
