First, I was a big Diablo 2 fan. It was my first real online RPG addiction. I've heard from some that people that played Diablo 2 will feel like they are playing it's upgraded twin sister with this game. Is that true?
Second question. I'm really only looking to purchase probably one of the games right now, factions or the original (as that's what I'm willing to spend at the moment). Will I be at a disadvantage in PvE or PvP (PvP especially) if I don't own both? Will there come a point where I feel like I need to purchase the original? 50 for factions plus 40 more for the original would be a lot to plunk down to play one game.
Third question: Economy. If I go out and buy Guild Wars factions, am I going to start leveling up and feel like I need to buy gold or whatever in order to buy things? Is the economy/botting really bad? Or is it pretty fair and easy to make enough money / get good loot to get good stuff?
Thanks

oh and. economy?
wait there is economy in GW? LOLERCOASTER!!!!111oneoneone
Is it like this in guild wars? Will you feel at a disadvantage if you don't have both?
Its a personal preference which class you want to play.
I really dont like the game, so I am going to refrain from posting extremely biased info to drive you away. Cheers!
it get VERY boring after a while seeing as to how the only thing worth doing at lvl 20..(max...which is sad in it self) is PvP, and thats almost worthless unless you are willing to spend a few months getting the equipment, spells, upgrades, and runes, and then you will still be toped by MANY ppl
Economy=NPC is not bad prices, they are low to medium priced for the equipment, better to quest for most items tho. Player econ....thats diffrent, if ur willing to pay 200gold for 10 iron ingots (Which are easy to get) then your a loony, as for some items..you wont have enough money unless you buy money from some site or off of someone in RL
That really sounds like shit... Especially the PvP situation. I love PVP, I don't want to hate it for the first 3 months in a game. I hate games where it feels like you're always playing catch-up to the veterans. You play for 3 months, and they're still kicking your ass in PvP because they're 3 months ahead of you. I thought PvP in this game was more skill-dependant.
And yeah. That's another caveat of joining a game that's been out for a while. Feeling like you have to spend RL money just to get in-game money because they don't start you out with enough to deal with the current economy.
Thanks for the info though. Word of mouth on forums is IMO the single best resource for judging whether or not a game is worth it. As an SWG veteran, I talk shit on that game all the time
What is the advantage to having both though?
I mean, you say it won't put me at a disadvantage if I were to just get factions. I acknowledge that as you trying to tell me I won't have a headache if I just get factions. Understood.
But, what will I be missing out on if I just get factions and don't get the original. All I know is that the new game is just a new continent. Getting the old game would allow me to access the old continent. Does the new continent not have everything as equally good as the old continent does as far as things I will acquire? Important items/skills? Coin making oppurtunity? Will I run into points in the game that urge me to need the other game?
Guild Wars is a great game. It was made by the people who made Diablo 2 (if I remember correctly), and it does evoke some of the spirit of diablo. However it's a very unique game and great fun to play.
Personally I would say buy Factions right now, as that's where most people are, and you'll probably have a bit of an easier time getting groups and stuff. You shouldn't find the need to buy gold or anything like that unless you feel you have to have the uberest item from level 1. Gold is pretty easy to get in general.
The deal with having both is you basically get double the content to play. I've been playing Guild Wars Factions since it came out (had the original before that) and I still haven't gone through all the Factions content. It's lots of fun and definately worth the buy.
The only disadvantage you will have if you don't buy the original is that you may not have access to some skills. This may or may not be a detriment to you in pvp. You may not have the skill that the flavour of the month is using, but every build has it's counter (eventually). After you go through all the content of one, then you'll probably want to buy the other.

Well that's cool. I think I might buy factions and start working on a character, and then maybe buy the original when I find it for a good price a month or two down the line. I usually don't buy online game currency unless it's a situation like SWG where they start you with 5000 credits, and a vehicle for transportation is 30,000 on most vendors. It sounds like it wouldn't be much of a struggle leveling in this game.
Another question btw. Does this game have a "bound" loot system similar to other games? In that, when you equip a really hot piece of loot for example, you're the only one that can use it? Or can all items be traded and used by other players even after you equip them?
All armour is crafted for you by an NPC, and is customised for the character. Nobody else can equip it.
Weapons are not customised, but you can pay 10g and get them customised for you. This gets you a 20% damage bonus on the weapon, but again you won't be able to sell it later, except for to the merchant.

Droknar's forge has the best armor statistically in the game. If you get to beacon's perch you can get a run there for about 2.5k, the armor will usually cost about 20k total including materials. If you are currently in yaks you can get a run to beacons for probably about 500g. Total cost around 25k, no problem, and unless you want 15k armor you won't have to upgrade again.

Go play the game, and then come back here and post. Maybe if you have played it you might be able to give a better opinion of the game.
It's very obvious you haven't really played it for several reasons:
1) You don't understand the concept behind a cap of 20
2) You don't understand how PvP really works in the game
3) You don't understand the content vs level of the player
4) You don't understand the game's economy at all
5) You don't understand the concept of the PvE environment at all
Please stop "informing" people of things you obviously have NO grasp on. Stick to your WoW or EQ fanboi forums, and let the people that really know the game, or those that want to learn about the game, post here
The only real problem I'm having with it is this. If you create a pvp character from the preset-builds, some of the skills in thsoe builds are from Prophecies campaign. So once you actually get into the game with that pvp character, some of your skills with have a lock icon on them and you can't use them, unless you have the Prophecies campaign as well.
so the pvp characters are gimped for thsoe who only have Factions.
