there is an option where one could download the game for a free trial and then subscribe. Think the msn when it ran the game was involved. Check the official Asheron's Call web site for that d/l option. As of feb AC is increasing it's subscription of 3 years from $10 to now $13 with a promise of another un needed new server this spring. A new expansion is also due soon and the orriginal game likely will be included in that for new users. Turbine has bought back the rights from MS as MS will have Mythica and Sigil's SigilQuest rpg eventually.
Asherons Call is a superp game holding most of the elements that keep players coming back each day for more. You want quests? AC has a thousand of them, not counting all the new player "deliver this letter" quests.
You wont have trouble leveling quickly in the right Monarchy, they have free player controled NPCs to buff you up enough that you can tank mobs 15 levels higher than you. Your first 30 levels will fly by. The only slow part will be learning the game play, all the best hunting spots for your level, and tinkering..:)
Do NOT worry about finding other new players, many people are returning to AC and some interested in seeing what has kept a large player base for 5 years now. I still have a character thats level 18 I think. You should also take note that when you decide on a charater type...DO NOT try to average out your STATS in the creation. If you are a warrior type make sure you have 100 Strength, 100 coord,...the only way to not be gimped in the future is to be extreme. I mean gimped as in everyone else seems to follow the same creation templates so if you dont...a guy the same level and character type as you would be able to handle himself better in the higher levels. Yes, I know it is one of ACs many flaws but over all you just get used to it.
If you want a melee character, be prepared to over powered by mages and archers...they have however implimented speacial tinkering abilities to add an ability on to a weapon that helps balance things out. I don't play anymore so I cant tell you how it works but I hear its great..:)
AC has its flaws, like outdated graphics, under developed PvP, and a little unbalancing of the classes, but you ALWAYS have a choice to stop what path you are taking and switch...it takes a while, but it can be done. If you want fast paced combat, a billion fun quests that will leave you sweating as you make that dangerous 45 min run through the DIre Lands on route to a complexe quest...or that anticipation of gaining the desired quest item and hopeing you dont die along way as 60-100 fellow players rush all around you killing MoBs. Its a blast and I miss it...maybe when they add in their graphic update sometime next year I may return...they will add in AC2 engine I think.
Anywayz, Jump into Dereth and have fun!

PS: Mind my spelling and composition of this post as I just got 6 teeth pulled today and Im still very much in La La land..:)
AC is a great game, still my favorite.
The game hasn't been discontinued. Turbine recently bought the franchise back from Microsoft and they plan to re-release the game. Since Microsoft wasn't planning on keeping the game they stopped stocking the game...anyway, Turbine should have it back on shelves soon. Apparently, there are still a few places you can get older copies of the game, but it is a challenge.
Since the game has been hard to find, there currently aren't that many newbies. In fact, most players are high level. However, the game is still going strong with monthly patches of new content. An expansion is in the works that will include a graphics update.
