Battle engine questions

Does the battle engine in EVE work like other MMORPGs or like FPS games?  I mean, in WoW when you target something you ALWAYS hit it ... basically click and auto target / follow.  You miss when the random # gens say you miss, but still.  In FPS games, you have to actually target something as in RL shooting with a weapon.

I suspect it's the former, but would sign up tomorrow if it's the latter.  I was a huge Descent 2 fan years back.  Miss that kind of thing.

No, its not like FPS. But dont let that dissuade you. EVE online is the best made mmorpg ever. Im sure that could be argued but i have never seen a game so in depth, with so many options, however, its a long term game.. u cant really 'win'. It can take years to get the skills to be on par with veterans. There is so much to learn in this game it is safe to say you will never learn all there is to know, nor will you ever max out in skill level as that is just not possible.

No two characters are even remotely the same thanks to over a 150 different skills to choose from. It has the most in depth building system if ur into that, thousands of blueprints to learn.

You have to have extreme patience to play this game. Even after 6 months - 1 year you are still considered a noob and you will feel like one more or less.

The game is also unique in that its in hardcore mode, so if ur a true pvper, if u die, u lose your stuff, which can take a long time to replace if ur not prepared for that loss.

Pvp is so great, you truly cant decide against it simple because its not twichy type of fps pvp. There is so much to know, so many tactics, military experience and battlefield command experience comes in handy here. That is why it got rated #1 by readers in pvp of all mmorpgs.

Thats right, #1 pvp game by mmorpg readers, along with several other awards as #1 game.

But if you are a grinder and want to be lvl 60 in a month, etc.. this is not your game. Period, you will get bored and have wasted your time. If you are not ready for the last mmorpg you will play for a loooong time, dont bother. It will take up all your free time :P

Drokar has done pretty well in summing up EVE. If you target a ship and fire say your Railguns, they can and will miss, if the target is too close you will miss most of the shots. You need to think about how you are going to approach a battle. If distance is your thing, you set up for that using say Railguns and a microwarp to get you outta close combat.

Missiles never ever miss, sometimes though depending on your skills, they may not do as much damage, but you never miss with them. Also if you are engaged in PvP and you think, damn, I'm beating this guy, be aware of the environment around you and watch things like the Local channel. He may have called in reinforcements from his Corp or he is playing with you and turns on his armor hardners and repairers or shield hardners and shield booster. There are so many different types of ship layouts that you will very rarely encounter two ships with the same setup, I have set up ships for support roles or combat or tanking. An example is lvl 4 missions my Corp CEO was running, he was fitted for tanking the mission and myself and another corp member acted as his wingmen. I was flying a Thorax, all blasters, antimatter and dmg mods, other wingman was a Caracel with full missile layout and dmg mods.

I was able to get in close, orbit the targets and nail the battleships while the CEO tanked the dmg as they wouldn't fire on me (they did sometimes and I warped) as I wouldn't be able to take much damage. We set out as support, and we could complete lvl 4 missions easy with the right setups. worked well and we still fly like that sometimes.

Anyway, enough from me, cooking food :D

    Hello

    In short:

Just like most MMORPGs, not FPS like at all. Target, fire, set optimal distance, watch outcome.

If you want to die then yes, by all means wait and watch. Due to skill differences and trying to outthink your enemy you can take down a Battleship with a Tech 1 cruiser, but the key is understanding the game. No idea, you'll die and it will cost you a fortune.

Try flying an interceptor or even better a Vagabond and then come back and say that again with a straight face. For some ships it's very much true yes but for others it can't be futher from the truth. But that's what makes eve good, variation :)

Here is some points about eve combat.

You can and do miss it depends on your skills and even with decent skills you can miss.

because of the speed that Big guns rotate its possable to make them miss by flying fast and at a angle to them forcing them to rotate to aima t you and because you are fast they may not rotate fast enough.

    Ecm i very usefull.

its possable for a 3 frigates [equivelent of a level 2 charecter in WOW] to kill a BAttleship [ Equivelent to a level 40 charecter in Wow]. This is because there are tactical possabilitys in eve that can make you more likely to win than a vet player. For example if he uses guns as his wepons out manouver his guns like i said above never fly straight at him.

You could try jamming his locking sensors with ecm after all if he cant hit you he cant kill you.

Or you could work as part of a team and bring him down that way.

And combat looks a bit like a level in a flight simulator so can be pretty cool.

Oh and for the above tactic about making guns miss you this wont work against issiles best tactic is to outrun the blast wave [in other words be small or fast  or both].

The faster you are, the more you depend on speed for survival. The more you depend on speed for survival, the more suicidal your battle plan is.
