I have a very strong feeling that Vanguard is going to "Daikatana" and Brad will forever be known as the John Romero of MMOs. Disagree all you want, I will be proven right in the end.
I am not going to argue with you, and most of the fanboi's are to dim to know what you are saying. BTW, the dolt fanboi who thinks investors are just waiting to jump on this game, investors ("we") look at percentage of returns, and wouldn't invest in a flop looking at 200k players, 500k is the lowest number of players you can even look at to be considered a partial success post WoW. Investors invest to make money, not barely break even.
If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)
Originally I was going to flame you Vendris, but I don't want to do that. My apologies for that. I do however disagree, Brad McQuaid is a very intelligent guy with alot of creativity. Of course it also helps to be surrounded by a very strong development team . Not only that, but EQ which was originally his creation is still going strong despite some changes to the game after Brad left, that many did not agree with. I think Vanguard will be an outstanding game because he is taking the best concepts of EQ and combining that with some of the best concepts of today. But that is just my opinion, so I will just have to agree to disagree with you for now.
Haha. It's ok, my post was admitedly somewhat deliberately provocative. I don't have anything against Brad, and initially I had high hopes for the game... I'm just starting to get that "uh oh" feeling about the whole thing at this point. I could, of course, be wrong

i disagree, a game doesn't have to have 500k+ subscribers to be a partial success, no game is going to challenge wow for its numbers any time soon and i think it is unfair to expect a game to reach a million subscribers to be deemed a success.
i would say 500k subscribers would be a great success for any mmo, and 250k+ a partial success, and to the OP....i think Dnl takes the cake for the biggest flop and for the high expectations they purposely created for their game.

Amount of subscribers is irrelevant, it largely depends on how much is invested for investors to be happy.
To make an arbitary number like 500k is a bit odd when you don't know how much has been invested.
Take SWG, 200k subscribers and it broke even (god knows what its on now), about a year ago, so profit occured (before CU).
I have high hopes for Vanguard, I think it will be 6 months after release this game will truely rock.
The plans for this game are amazing.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

Go invest all you want. I want to play a great game. WoW sucks hardcore donkey dink and yet it is the most successful MMORPG ever. Mcdonalds burgers are just not the greatest and they are the most successful restaurant ever. Do you understand the parallel? If not, google the word parallel.

As far as Vanguard goes, I had very high hopes for the game when Brad first started talking about it. I would love for the game to live up to it's expectations, as I find most "modern" MMOs to be dumbed down and too easy. The new philosophy in MMOs seems to be "hand out rewards like candy as long as someone plays for long enough, no matter how well they actually play." Vanguard looked like it might break this new trend. Unfortunately, I have a strong suspicion that Vanguard's reality is going to fall far short of its hype.

Does this mean small buisnesses are failures as they do not make the money a large, heartless corporations makes?
This is an excellent point. I am going to be sure to be absolutely loyal to Vanguard, because I want "the little company that could", Sony, to win against all the evil giant companies making games.
Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

You misinterpreted the analogy. The analogy had nothing to do with who is publishing the game, but it was focusing on the point that 500K subscribers is considered failing just because WOW has millions. You are attacking a strawman, and not very well at that.

You see if any company is expecting 500k or else its considered a flop then it amounts to one thing total greed.
In financial terms even less then 3 years ago 50k was agreed in a podcast by 3 seperate developers to be considered a reasonable profit.
I keep reading post like "oh no game is a success if it does not have 500k subs".
Well this is why they should make economics mandatory in schools imho.
Inflation is nowhere bad in developed countries in last 3 years to say what was good enough to make a profit at 50k is now needing 500k.
Not trying to be rude but this numbers people hatch up reminds me of little kids.Whe i grow up i want to be a world famous doctor. You ask them what about a small community doctor and they so no unless i am world famous i will not be a doctor and then sulk.
Fact is the doctor in a small community is still richer then more then 75% of the country.
Like someone already posted is it not silly to say unless you are bill gates everyone with wealth less then half his is a failure??
sure WoW was a runaway success but if you approach a buisness man and tell him he can make a profit with 50k subs he will jump to invest.Any buissness man knows you invest in a profit even if the margin is small rather then sit 20 years on your money waiting for the next surebanker wow to appear.
Vanguard will break the 50k mark, the all access alone almost guarantees this happening so no less then 50k boxes will sell.Look at the crappy MxO it had a good jump in box sales simply because people wanted it on their all access accounts.
And vanguard has enough loyal fans without all access to hit 50k .Overrall even with a poor launch i see 100k as a good possibility.
Even if SWG broke even or made a profit. It was a flop. Loss of opportunity. There was no reason for a game based on the Star Wars franchise not to be huge.
I just cracks me up. The gaming world is so different than most worlds. I don't know if it's the same everywhere else, but it seems like people try to come up with reasons why you should't play a game that they don't see as the perfect game.
Is this the same in the book reading world?
Whatever....this is for all the haters. Just leave us be in peace and enjoy our game, if you don't like it...then don't post here. You don't seem me posting in WoW boards or EQ2 boards saying this and that why the game sucks. If I think it sucks, then I think it sucks...my oppinion isn't the same as everyone elses. I happen to think the best MMO out right now is Lineage 2, does that make it better than before? Nope, it's just what I like.

Vanguard will be a very diffrent and unique game from what we have seen so far.
One thing that makes it really unique will be the box. you know one some of these piece of papers, sometimes for a serial key, you have to scratch on it with a coin to reveal what is below, which could be your serial code?
Well if you scratch the Vanguard box with a coin, you will find a new boxart with in the center, Yellow big letters which say: "Everquest"
I think that is really awesome, it has never been done before!
I am a follower of VG, very active in the community for a long time now but it pains me to say that there is some merit to OP’s comments.
What we know is Brad was as apart of a team that achieved the technical marvel we know as EQ. Given the fact that Lords British did it before, we wont take that into consideration... But IMO, BM is given far to much credit. He was involved with allot of games, just about every single piece of fodder ware you see on SoE all access pass, he was involved in. You can all argue on what level…
I don’t know if Vanguard will deliver. I see Systems and not Game play. I see tedium and not depth. If your thinking is that EQ was a good model to build a “Game” then I think you’re doomed. Yeah, it’s a good business model but not a good game… the leaked vids I see show me allot of tedium, people confuse tedium for depth, the idea of walking/mounting/running for an hour to a destination is just not interesting now. The idea of having to sit on a ferry for an extended amount of time while I go kill time… not interesting… These have now become exit points, things that make me klnda look away… and when your major selling point has become tedium… Instead of scanning logs to see what the enemy is doing… we get an icon? How has this changed anything?
And “The Game” has changed. Do you really think VG is going to have an in-depth story line? Will it deliver the kinda of iconic moments that I have experienced in FFXI? IDK.
Ive seen allot of Beta vids and so far, all I see is tedium and systems… when can I see some real game play…? When can I stop playing an interface and actually play a game. This is where the genre has failed, it lacks the ability to evolve and to change. To take a look at game makers and say hey, that’s a great game. Maybe i can build the framework/middle ware/infastructure to take that concept to another level? (maybe Brad needs to spend some time at Nintendo … as an intern or something)…
Here we have a game, been in development for about 4 years? They have shown us not one piece of real game play footage. Then all of a sudden a game like Tabula Rasa comes along… and just smacks me in the face, it says
“Hey I got some original ideas!”

They have no issues with showing the game off in its most raw form… what is sigils problem? Can’t they see that allot of the new “Systems” they are shipping with VG they are also being implemented into EQ2?
E3, they didn’t really show me anything. They didn’t get me… I’m here looking for content and game play instead, I see an inventory screen… I see interface management… Don’t they get it? That in 2006-2007 creating a new 3-D IRC chat client is not going to cut it lol.

I made a similar but more elaborate post that drew the similiarities between Daikatana and Vanguard really clearly about 2 months ago, so I'm calling dibs on this prediction.
I predict that this game will be a huge success. There are many reasons to strengthen this prediction, and not very many that come to mind that would say otherwise.
Bah! Ok, you can have the rights to the Daikatana prediction, if I can keep the rights to my Battlecruiser 3000 prediction
