Experienced MMORPG Fans, Heed My Call

The first MMORPG I played was WOW. I stuck with it for about a year and left this last February becuase the lag was so great . I was having trouble even the simplest things like moving around town. I am utterly lost without an MMORPG to devote my spare time into . I just tried WOW again with a free trial account and nothing has changed, regardless of the server tried or server population. Are there any other MMORPG's that are as fufilling as WOW? I know WOW was very simple and restrictive in some aspects but I had a blast playing it. I've tried EVE but was not a fan. Any suggestions, guideance, or advice of any kind would be most appreciated.

You left because of lag? Did you try other realms to see if it was a local or server problem?

Anyway, did you look into Everquest 2? It's a lot like WoW, but has a lot more depth.

Are you going towards P2P or F2P?

Not sure what P2P or F2P is but I'm looking for something that is fun, time consuming, and enveloping like WoW. As for realms, I covered that above where I said regardless of server or server population. I tried New, Low, Medium, High; Sen'jin, Archimonde, Thrall, etc.... I seriously tried 10 to 15 different servers, chose human, and ran from Northshire to Stormwind (to the auction house) to test for lag. All graphical settings were as low as possible and most of all when I started playing WoW I never had lag issues. It snuck up on me and then progressively got worse. I've tried different computers which utilize different ISP's for the internet connection and all yeild the same results.

I like to say Saga of ryzom is a good game to try atm.You dont need a credit card for the free trial,it runs good, it has lots of players and the gameplay is deep. Its set in some weard relm where all the lore is nothing like you know.Has the freedom of character customizing in terms of skills, and a nice crafting system.

F2P= means its free to play.
P2P= Means you pay a monthly fee to play.

It really doesn't matter. I'm just looking for something to devote my time to. I have the extra $15/mo for a P2P.

Depending on what you enjoy in WoW...see WoW is a tutorial to MOST MMOs on the market.

EQ: If you like raiding and you think hardwork is great would definitely be your best pick.

EQ2: If you want a social-oriented MMO, pretty much a mix between EQ and WoW on many aspects.

DAoC: If you like to kick Alliance/Hordes in RvR

Saga Of Ryzom:  If you think everything was too easy, too limiting, not enought.  This is the elitist game per excellence.

City of Heroes/Villains: If you think WoW was great but it was too slow, not enough customisation, too much pointless stuff like loot...best combat-MMO experience out there.  Although very FAST, I would tell you it is not an action game.

DDO: If you want an ACTION game with rpg-skin.  Nicely done, but really not what they advertise it is.

Guild War:  I heard the PvP is awesome...and real Blizzard staff there.

If you were a big fan of WoW then I would suggest City of Heros as a next step.

It looks cool - plays smooth, and is aimed more at having fun than anything else.

    Enjoy

If you are a fan of WoW then almost all MMORPG in the top 10 will do you as WoW adds nothing to the MMORPG world. It's simple, it's limited.

Wow is not fulfilling but that aside - games that want to be wow ....

EQ2 - 70 levels, almost exactly the same as wow. Population is very low unless you go on a pvp server - on which you will find fellow ex-wow players. Graphics are different to wow in that they are professional rather than cartoony but you should still feel at home. 7 day free trial.

RFO - Very slow grind from korea but you cant beat it for the communal grind (10 people getting together to chat and bang out some levels for 5 hours) and the chip wars are 3 times a day and put everyone on the server together for an all out battle. 10 day free trial.

AO - Graphics are lacking BUT its free til march 2k7 and you cant walk 5 metres without seeing another player in the free part of the game. Very smoothly progressive level system and raid centralised at high level. Cant really beat a 9 month free trial. If you want simple avoid this one tho - I am on my third try as I keep getting angry with how complicated it is but I think Im here to stay now.

DaoC - Personally, I hate this and played the free trial for 2 hours. I have never seen such a sorry excuse for a newbie area. Saying that, a lot of people are playing it and it appears to have fun RvR and a wow-esque level system. Think 14 day trial.

RYL - If you can figure out how to use their web site, its suppose to be free forever atm. 100 level grind but fully westernised and the servers are packed as its free.

Pristontale - Simple, fun, free to level 40.

Knight Online - Simple, fun, packed, free forever.

GTH - Simple, fun, big buggy (server downtime is bad) but free forever.

SWG - I'll get flamed for this but they have turned star wars into wow, as an ex wow player you may enjoy the new atmosphere. Very straight level system in a great star wars universe. Choose your server carefully tho - I think its Bria ftw. 10 day free trial.

    RIP AC2 :(

Heh, Bria wouldn't be my pick if you don't want lag.  Chilastra is decently populated (not on the scale of Bria though...) and has great performance.  I play NZ with a ping of 320ish and it works great :)

i suggest u get either EQ2 or City of Heroes/Villains.

EQ2 = quite simular to WoW but more in depth, better graphics and sound. first MMO i payed for acually and i got sucked into it the first 20 minutes i played of it.

City of Heroes/Villains = well, if you ever wanted to be a superhero or supervillains, then this is the game for you. It really simple, And probably has the fastest and most intense combat outa all MMOPRGs. And if your sick of collecting loot you will probably love this. i have been playing both CoH and CoV for 6 months and it gets better and better.

Oh and in the latest patch/issue they loads of new stuff, and one of the new features are PhysX support.

so if you got a PhysX processor this would be the game if you want to make use of it.

    AHH

I have never had so much trouble finding a party in a game lol. This is practically a single player game unfortunately.

I completely agree.   This game may as well be a singleplayer.  The best part of the game, as well, is creating your toon.  Compaired to that aspect, the gaming mechanics pale.

Hi there.Did you have troubles with eve as per lag.Reason i am asking is although WoW servers (low or high ones) are NOT the most stable around they are usually very playable.

However,if EVE played well and it was not from your end  and you have a okish computer try EQ2 as it has more depth and longer stay power.

Instead of looking for another MMO to play, I would suggest fixing/upgrading your computer and/or your internet connection, because I played WoW for over a year and never, ever had lag like you are describing.  Login queues yes, horrible lag, no. I also never heard a single person I played with describing anything like you are describing, and I strongly suspect the problem was at your end.

Why do i keep reading such a post.Is this an urban legend (if its possible to have one in a mmorpg lol)?

I play on nagafen(pvp) and oasis(pve).Oasis is not even as populated as say runnyeye or AB servers(both pve) and it has quite a lot of ppl running around.

If in doubt i be happy to run you around oasis with my character if you PM as long as you create on that server for you to see thats a total lie.And if it convinces you oasis has loads of players then you will find many servers has even more as its not the most populated EQ2 server.

I played so many mmorpg i can't even count them so i think i know what populated servers look like.EQ2 population is very healthy.

Sounds odd that you didnt have that problem...then all of a sudden you had problems with lag. Ive quit playing about a month ago but I did have prolems once myself. Basically addons caused me to lag, even the reliable addons like ctraid assist. Not so much, but after adding multiple addons over the months it would cause considerable problems.

I tend to agree .It would be good if he told us how eve played for him.WoW beauty is it runs on low specs just fine so hardly see why he is having such issues.

If the OP is bored of WoW(which maybe the case as by now he is probably hit 60 and the dreaded wall of boredom) then thats another issue.

Its pointless moving to another game with higher requirements if the issue is your computer itself.

And yes frequent add on over the year with inadequate wiping them will cause that.Might need a fresh installation.

Thank you for the break down on the different games. I really appreciate the advice. EVE played perfeclty for me. The reason I didn't like EVE is it really wasn't a "play with your buddy at all times" kind of game. My wife and I played WoW all the time together but the inability to share quests or even receive the same ones was pretty detrimental. I did have a bunch of addons when I quit back in February but this is a fresh install of windows and a trial account with no addons; same problem as when we left. I wouldn't think WoW was too much for my computer becuase I've seen it run with no lag at all.

If you liked WoW, then you should definitly try Everquest 2. its basicly the next step from WoW, its a lot like it.

  • kahnzkahnz Member Posts: 244

if you and your wife play together then DAoC may be a good game for you.  I haven't played in about 6 months, but the server/cluster population was decent then.  DAoC is not a game that's gonna suck you in right away. That may be why the 2 hour guy hated it.  It's also a game that sucks to solo, but a commited duo works pretty well. I mean as long as you pick two classes that compliment each other.  It is a very group oriented game, and has a good community.

I think they have a free 14 day trial, but that doesn't include the Catacombs expansion. I dunno why Mythic doesn't want to give people a taste of the newest and best stuff they have.  Anyhow, if you like the play style after 14 days, you will love Catacombs.  Catacombs also has a big graphics upgrade in case you think the graphics are a bit dated.

DAoC is NOT WoW though.  It is a much more complex game that takes some getting used to if you are used to WoW.

Get City of Villains, I think it's only $29 or so and it includes the original City of Heroes. Fast action and awsome character customization. Sure the missions get repeditive after a while but it's one of the most fun filled MMOs there is. Download the 14 day free trial and see what you think.

the answer may be as simple as you caught something

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
