I don't know actually. I mean, I loved Firefly and thought Serenity was a great addition to the series, one of the best tv show to movie deals done in a long time but an MMO could be a stretch.
When you think of it, there's really not much deep story wise that we know about in the rest of the Firefly world, then would it centered around, the show itself ? The future and the universe itself ? Would it be about the outer worlds or the inner core planets ? Would it be a space life sim or action ?
Whichever way they would go, there's not tons of room to move. So yeah, I like the idea of being able to play a shipemate on some smuggling ship, giving it to the alliance whenever possible, I'm just not sure there's lots of play value in there.

<nod> I agree with Shae. The show was largely character-driven. Take a minute to imagine the television show, but with the main characters played by your average MMO gamer. I don't know about you, but it suddenly becomes a show I have little interest in watching. The show was terrific because Whedon and the cast made it terrific. The combination of Sci-Fi and Western themes was fun, but it's really just another Rebellion versus Empire, Humans versus Cylons, David versus Goliath, little guy versus big guy situation when you break it down. I'm not denying that there were some interesting features to the 'verse, nor am I suggesting that the story was without interesting plot twists. I just don't think there was enough there to support hundreds of thousands of players. I think Firefly would be much better suited to a singleplayer game or a tabletop game (which it's already been published as) than an MMO.

I love firefly but it wasnt popular. It got cancelled after 15 episodes never to be resurrected because the dvd sales lacked and the ratings sucked. Star Gate is in its 10th series and there have probably been over 30 star trek branded series in total - hence why they get their own franchise.
If the people buying the 24 DVDs stopped urinating money on a series about nothing then they would look around and buy niche series but unfortunately spoon-fed is the way they like it.

Like many have said here, I loved Firefly (and John Doe for that matter). But I cant see it having near enough content and interest for an MMO.
Interestingly enough, I cant even begin to say how many people loved that show I come across. From family, friends, guildies, forum people, etc.... I rarely come across someone who said they hated it. Were the ratings really that bad?? <shrug>
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
Oh I think it could. If they create a sandbox style mmo it could work. Just give players the tools and means. The TV episodes and movie gave a very good view of the firefly universe. Players could play as the alliance, a smuggler, reavers, pirates, bounty hunters, etc...
Well, the Serenity RPG (pencil and paper) did win RPG of the Year at Origins this year and is up for more awards at GenCon...

So much of the joy in that series was not only the complex characters but the wonderful dialogue.
That's not to say that the 'verse wasn't immersive or that I wouldn't buy it.
I'm just saying that I'd rather they put their energies to bringing the show back (if Joss Whedon et al were open to that).
That would make me very happy!
I don't see why it couldn't become a great MMO. I think having it being free from canon constraints, and therefore from fanboi arguements, would only be a benefit.

Its extremely similar to star wars and adopting a star wars skill system would work quite well with this. The problem is that the alliance is under exposed so no ones going to understand or want to be an alliance pilot or officer as a skill system.

Loved the show, but don't see how it'd make a good MMO. What made it great were the characters, and thier interactions. Replace that with a thousand random players running around, and it's just a space MMO with a cowboy twist. Maybe a good one, maybe a crapppy one, but wouldn't have much in common with the show at all.
I don't know why people are always saying this show, or that single-player game would make a great MMO. The translation changes everything. What makes a good show has just about nothing to do with what makes a good MMO.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I just watched a, like, eight hour marathon of that on SciFi. I'd never seen it before, but I liked it, and now am going to rent the movie next time I can get a ride. That's saying something, considering the "Western Twist"... Really, I'd rather call it a 'western' twist than a 'cowboy' one. Cowboys suck, and, uh... no cows in space? I dunno. They used the... I don't want to call it a word, so... They said "ain't" a lot. Didn't sound natural.
Still, it was a good show, but I agree that it probably wouldn't make a very good MMORPG. Note the word "probably", though. If it was done right, it could be quite good. Ooh, or a Farscape MMORPG... Er, sorry. Bit off topic, I guess.
Firefly did make some good numbers. First of all : FOX aired the episodes in the wrong order and they were put in the most lousy airtime. FOX didn't even try to make it succesful. They wanted to score some quick cash and the put in another out-of-the-mill-for-numbnut-lacking-content-in-their-own-life-uneducated-drop-out-of-highschool-to-hammer-a-nail-in-some-wood reality show.
As far as I've heard Serenity DVDs and Season DVDs enjoyed high sales. Over 500.000 units of Season 1 were sold.
I don't see why the couldn't become a mmo? If you shared a ship with some fellow good RP'ers, you could easily get the same firefly feeling.
Anyways, I want an ended season 1, a continued series and a new movie. And I want MGM to buy firefly. Not FOX those inbreeds.

Sounds like EVE with a ground-game to me. But without space combat...

Still in: A couple Betas
I'd play that. And even as both a Trekker and Gater, I would be more hyped about a Firefly MMO than I am about Star Trek Online or Stargate Worlds.

In memory of Laura "Taera" Genender. Passed away on August 13, 2008.
But there could be other sci-fi mmo'ss simular to that franchise though it's gotta be more original.

other mmo's have been created on far less IP.
