A friend of mine still plays, but he always solo'ed games so he doesn't really care if it's a dying game. But when EQ2 comes out, he's dropping Earth and Beyond.
If you are looking for a good space mmorpg then maybe EVE Online would interest you. I currently play that one and am thoroughly enjoying it.

This game beats Eve hands down. I've been playing for well over a year. During that time i've tried many other games online and off. I still haven't found a good enuf game to even compete with it.
I played it for about 4 months when it first came out retail.
The game is quite nice visually but the gameplay after awhile became so reputition. Too much space travel to get to different quaderants to do the quests. Towing back to a repair base all time once you got crippled in combat sucked too.
I ended up junking the game after awhile. Right now I am sedated with FF XI. Will keep me going until something better comes out.

Well, there's lots of them out right now that are fun.
I've been with E&B since beta, and still have a blast playing.
Like most games, the lower levels are tough, because it takes a while to get used to the controls.
They have made vast changes in the last few months, and gameplay is much better now, with lots more content.
The mid-levels are still a little tough, but to get through the fastest, hit the job terminals, and yes they are boring, but atm they are the fastest way to level. Get in a good guild, there's lots of folks that will help with gear, and tips to complete missions.
I still have a blast playin this game, when I get bored with one character, I just start another... And theres also the storyline which has me hooked, with tons of puzzles to figure out.
I played for about 3 months and became bored with it. I didn't like being stuck to one ship. E&B does get updated content and a progressing storyline once a month, but it wasn't enough to hold my attention. Too restrictive character/ship wise. Found EVE and left E&B.
Strange game...sit in ship and read all the people talking on chat...sit in ship while moving to new area...sit in ship and get whacked by red thing...sit in ship while being towed...hmm get out of ship find new game.
Awesome game been playing for 5 months now.. just maxed out my first character. Am loving every second of it.. it's too addictive It's great as you can progress and have fun as a casual gamer or hardcore. There's is so much to do.. and the latest patch has been best ever.. can't wait for next months. I think player numbers are quite stable around the 55k mark and has been all the time I've player. I won't be leaving untill enb 2 or they shut the servers down. Tried eve.. mineing sim/graphical spreadsheet = yawn.
I've been playing for @ 4 months. I am a lvl 50. Must admit though it is rather boring doing the same thing over and over again. Story line is cool but it's just not an "exciting" game. I play when I'm in the mood for it. I have started a 2nd player which makes it more challenging. I believe once my 2nd player gets to lvl 50 I will become bored again...
Roubles, try getting into a good guild, make some friends, it will change your outlook on the game.
I've been with E&B since beta, and it's by far the best "Space" type game going. I beta'd SWG and Eve, both are ok games, but are not even close to E&B.
This game is a MMORPG, and while not many people get "into" the RPG end of it, there are many that do.
When I log in on my PW, I usually announce to the guild "Hails my Progen brothers" stuff like this can enhance your gameplay.
If you are only level 50 and bored, try getting into a good guild and make some friends, this will also help greatly in the game, because there are many aspects to the game that require help to accomplish.
Trade runs are a blast in a group, we have had races while doing them. Also the group gets a small XP boost if everyone is docked when selling.
Mining is much better grouped, the XP just rolls in... not to mention you have someone to chat with while doing it.
Combat is also much better grouped, the group can kill mobs that you can not take solo, and take them faster, which means more XP in time spent.
In short, get in with a good group/guild, and make friends. It will make a lot of difference in your gameplay.
One thing EnB had that some other games don't is friendly players. I never have encountered so many other people willing to help me out. I certainly wish all games were like that. If you think you've seen some mean, stealing, obnoxious players try Diablo 2. That's the game to play if you want to get ripped off and scammed. Even though that's not a mmorpg, that game is a record setter in my book.
Ive played earth and beyond and EVE and i prefer EVE. Earth and beyond gets VERY repetitive after like a month. Also it takes waaay too long to get from place to place unless ur a JE.
EvE has Auto pilot that takes you to the destination you chose. So u can go get a bite as the ship flys itself. Plus the pvp is sweet.
been playing E&B since beta, Earth and Beyond is still being played, the number of players is unknown (EA wont release it) but how long it will continue is questionable.
when the dev have chats with the player base, much is placed either on the "down the road(TM)" promise or the "we dont have enough resources" comment. things are introduced into the game that are not needed (ie legal macros) or things that are needed are ignored (increase of resources or the promised 3 classes).
the fate of this game is in the hands of EA, which means we are screwed (remember motor city online) .......
The game has improved from the content side lately. In Cooper the fishies now have an own sector upon activation of a device and some nice other things have been introduced (bit more exploration and less combat as well). However big issues with lag after the last patch and rumours about EnB being taking off the shelves in game stores.
Indications are there is either an update/upgrade coming or the game is toast. Love the game, so I hope its the first.
dont get me wrong, i love the game, its just a pity that EA isnt giving the devs the support they need.
the activated gate is great (so ive heard ) but the lag is horible, i had to page a GM to bump me out of jupiter due to lag had me going no where at warp speed...
i hope an expansion is in the works, that saved ultima's butt many times, and infused needed cash into the system. it would be nice to have a one on one with the devs to suggest ideas, and hope they listen.
Love EnB, but they really need to do something. EA has a very committed playerbase with EnB that will gladly upgrade to a next level. In addition an expansion or EnB2 platform may bring back lots of players that loved the game, but saw no progression. In that case they may get some of the spirit they started with.
Having said that, they should really expand the universe and include some of the concepts that Eve for example has with the economy. I think that would really help current gameplay.
FYI...After playing for several months and having over 2 mill in credits and being lvl 50...I cancelled my subscription. The game is just too boring and repititious. I mean really, how many asteroids can one blow up..or look for ruined hulks, or take forever to warp to another area only to blow up more asteriods and fight something just to warrrrrrrrrrp to another area to blow up more asteriods and kill something...and warrrrrrrrp....guess you get it HUH!
I NEED A NEW GAME TO PLAY/ANY SUGGESTIONS OUT THERE

I've been playing for just about a year. I got heavily into it, my wife got into it...then we started to fade.
Graphically, the game is beautiful. The story is interesting.
The quests have gotten too repetitive and some of them are just ridiculously overbalanced.
I haven't had crap for time to play it lately and I don't know if I'm going to be able to justify it past the next billing cycle.

Hmmm...wonder why I haven't just quit the game!!!

I lost interest in Earth and Beyond after about 8 weeks. It took me about 4 months to quit EVE.
I'm not sure I would even put the two in the same class. Eve has much more depth.
I have seen the Arctic Circle... And it is round.
