Leveling in GW?

LhexLhex Member UncommonPosts: 262
I dont seem to understand the leveling process in GW.  I hear you can either lvl from 1-20 in PvE then at lvl 20 enter PvP arenas.  OR you can just start an already premade lvl 20 char and immediately join in on the pvp.  So my question is, what is the point of lvling from 1-20 when you can start at lvl 20 already?

I find it rewarding to lvl up a character and make him somewhat unique from all the others but if in the end everyone is the same what is the point of taking the time to lvl?  I just wonder why they implemented that aspect of the game, for those not patient enough to play through 1-20 on their character?

Just wondering because I would like to try it out but Im not sure if this game would be for me as it seems the game caters to those that need immediate gratification.  So if everyone plays basically cookie cutter character builds isnt the PvP similar to Quake then?

I hope I am wrong about the game as I would like to try it out.  Any insights?

Well, there's a few reasons for making a PvE character over a PvP character, certain advantages that a PvP character wouldn't have.

For one thing, you'll have a larger stock of weapons to pick from with a PvE character, mostly because a PvP Only character only starts with 2 weapon sets, where a PvE character can have 4 or more weapon sets.

PvE characters can also have more than one set of armor (which is currently imbalanced in the GvG metagame), not to mention that a PvE character (especially one with Factions) can have armor that isn't normal, or looks one way, but has different stats, giving them an advantage of secrecy.

In addition, a PvE character can unlock new skills a bit easier than a PvP Only character can, and when the PvE character unlocks them, the PvP Only guy gets them, too.

So, in my honest opinion, it's much better to start with a PvE character or 3, just to unlock skills and weapon mods, then  make your PvP Only characters  a bit  stronger.

Also, the so called "Cookie Cutter Builds" are more or less pointless. What you really want is an assortment of skills for each of the characters in your party that complement each other as well as possible, so you end up with a 64 skill team build rather than 8 players with 8 skills each. Then, it becomes less about the skills themselves and more about how well you play, and how well you know the people you play with.

I hope I answered your questions there.

If you signed up to GW tomorrow tomorrow and made a PVP character, yes it would start out at level 20. BUT you would not have any skills unlocked on your account. You would only have access to the premades, which are extremely limiting (for example the only Mesmer premade is an Illusionary Weaponary build. No energy drain, migrane interrupt, fast cast air spiker, resmer...)

You'd need to get the skills unlocked by playing PvE with a real character, or really struggling in PvP to unlock them with Balthasar faction. Onco you unlock the skills you need you can then put them on the skillbar of a PvP character.

Also of note is that PvP character are limited to PvP areas only.

The purpose of PvP characters is not to give a quick way for lazy players to get max level. Level ultimately doesn't matter much in GW - in most arenas, if you're in PvP you'd better be lv 20. What DOES matter is your skills.

The purpose of PvP characters is to allow you to quickly make a new character that fits the needs of your team. If you have a shortage of monks, or need a warrior or necro or something, you can make one in about 5 minutes and be competitive, so long as you have unlocked the skills you need. If you have a PvE warrior but he's not got the kind of armour you need for the build your team wants, you can roll a PvP character and give him the nessecary armour, without needing to spend a ton of cash buying new armour and runes. PvP characters also start out with max damage weapons and perfect mods on the weapons, which PvE chars might have trouble getting.

Using PvE characters is fine (I always use my PvE mesmer in PvP, because she has perfect weapons and all mes skills unlocked) but PvP characters add immensely to your flexibility as a player.

this is where guildwars is new in the mmorpg world , also its hard to say what guildwars is about becose its really about what was said this this thread.

i agree the best way to play guildwars is to have a group of 8 people , real life friends is the best option , and play always as a group.

i find this a problem , i have meet nice people and i love the allience im in , but its still very hard to organize a good pvp team , a team that can try the world play offs.

Sorry just have to correct you here, the premade PvP mesmer is a spell slasher now IW. But you are right, starting a PvP character without having a PvE character first is virtually impossible. Basically the level 20 PvP characters are for people who have multiple builds they can play, so if their guild needs something different for GvG they can simply "roll together" a PvP character with the build they need. Do not start a PvP character without playing through the storyline with a PvE, you won't have the idea of the game and everything will be very very confusing.

good question but simple... u need to make a pve player in order to UNLOCK the skills for pvp players. like you cant just start playing pvp, because you wouldnt have any skills or runes to play against other players who have unlocked all those important qualities to a character to maximize the players potential of play. another plus to why a pve character is better to play is the wide variety of customization in weapons, looks, and different looking armor that it offers rather then a pvp cahracter where you are limited to chose between a small section of choices. one good thing about making a quick pvp cahracter is to be able to play ne characters quickly. for example, your guild needs a certain type of character and build and no one in the team has the correct build, well you just cant lvl ur pve cahracter to 1-20 but however you can make a pvp character quickly thats already lvl 20 with skills and runes unlocked. its an ON-DEMAND character. I hope you guys understand what I am talking about, and I hope you enjor guild wars as I am.
