Advice for a returning froob

Ive tried this game a few times and keep coming back to it as its the only western sci fi grindfest that catches my eye 
But last time I played I encountered a few problems due to the learning curve.
Firstly, what is a good solo class? I made a pure tank but had problems grouping and soloing was a write off. And do solo classes still have something to contribute in groups? I guess this is on a per class basis but you get what Im asking.
What level does the game kick in and how long does it take to reach that level? Im like an old person - I have a thin patience when Im confused but will go along for the ride if i know when I can expect to understand whats going on.
And which server is the best? are there any special things about the servers i.e. one is a pvp or rp server?
