Character Devolopement

LoD254LoD254 Member Posts: 373

I've been trolling the boards trying to find a new mmorpg. i jsut quit SB and DAoC. I tried AO, Planetside, and Endless ages but there was nothing that interested me. Eve looks like it could be doable.

I want to know how characters develope. How long does it take leveling? What are the training paths and how do they work? Crafting isnt a big part of the game is it? How the pvp and how does it work?

I didnt like RvR in daoc but i loved the pvp servers. i hate wasting my time crafting and learning to craft. Ill kill for my items or pay for them but i refuse to make them.

Well. First of all the characters don't level per se. The game is skill-based, so there are no levels to the characters themselves, rather to their skills. Skill training takes real-world time, based on your attributes. For example, the Energy Weapons skill is based on Perception and Willpower, so high attribute values lessens the training time. A basic skill takes perhaps 15-20 minutes to finish training to level 1. Personally I started training the higher-level Amarr Frigates skill to level 5 (highest) this morning, which is slated to complete in 12 days. So, depending on what type and level we're talking about....

You can train all skills you want and can afford. High-level skills take longer and have prerequsisite skills that must be trained to certain levels, but otherwise no restrictions.

Crafting is a huge part of the game - if you choose to. I haven't, I buy my stuff or pick it up from pirates, and that is no problem.

PvP is a pretty big part of the game, depending on which area you are in. All star systems have a security rating from 1.0 (highest, newbie) to 0.0 (lowest, lawless) and all players are rated from -10 (most wanted fugitive, outlaw) to +10 (shining hero) in sec rating. Initiating PvP (unless your corp/guild as at war with the opponent) in an 1.0 system earns you a hefty hit on your security rating, and brings down an armada of NPC battleships to gank your ass. Jumpgates will shut down and sentry guns around stations will blast you to bits. In lower security space, the sec-rating hit players take are less or non-existant (0.0), and provokes less or no NPC response. Many player alliances and pirates take up residence in the large (and profitable) 0.0 space, where there is plenty of warfare to go around. Pirates tend to hang around jump-gates and toll or destroy ships (and pick up their cargo and equipment), until driven out by coalitions or alliances.

You can obtain items by other means than crafting items. You can buy items from the market, kill NPCs for loot, make your corp mate build the item for you, or go out and join pirate corp and kill players and hopefully end up with some good loot. A lot of EVE players don't even have the skills for production, and they have gotten along fine. I personally do not have any production skills, and I just get my corp mates to build me the items I need.

Alright well thats good. the crafting issue is out of the way.

What is the death penalty? loss of gold, items etc for pvp. The character advancement system sounds nice. they do advance when your not online correct? people would jsut be leaving comps on while they sleep id guess.

The skill training timer advances when you're offline. Haven't played since beta, but I understand it still the same.

contemplating giving it a month or so too... Haven't played a mmorpg since Horizon beta.. getting withdrawals :P And everything else out there is either too old, or "been there done that"  Lots of good looking games on the horizon... but they are in beta still. Need something.. like now! :P

The death penalty kicks in when you are "podded", ie when your ship is destroyed and someone targets and destroys you escape pod. Or if the pod is blown up by splash damage from missiles hammering the wreck. Sometimes you can get away clean in the pod though.

As long as your clone is upgraded to the proper quality (=certain amount of skill points saved), nothing is lost beside the ship, cargo and equipment. Cargo and equipment can be found spinning in cargo cans in space for a while, unless scooped by other players. Ships are pretty expensive as they get bigger, but can be insured to cover at least part of the cost.

Yes, the skills train when you are not online.

Interestingly, some people found another reason to leave their comp on while they sleep, "AFK mining". That is, they fitted a single mining laser to a huge industrial transport (only have a single turret hardpoint for lasers, cannons, mining lasers, etc) and set it to work at a big asteroid in safe space while they slept. Mining was horribly slow this way, but when they woke up they had a big load of ore anyway. Unfortunately they sucked the resources dry from safe newbie space this way. Haven't seen people do this in a while, luckily. This could stem from the fact that certain people took it upon themselves to load up a small frigate with cruise missiles and blow the inert industrials up, even if they got ganked by NPC security in return...a frigate is cheap though...   :-)

I believe that you can have more than one ship correct?  But, can you be operating more than one ship at a time.  Can I have three minning ships running at the same time, all doing the same thing on the same asteroid?  Or can I be out fighting in my cruiser with my industrial ship back at home mining away?  Or do you have to have all your extra ships docked and only controll one at a time?

Unless they changed from beta. only one ship at a time(rest docked)

(Gah.. The further a thing is from your grasp, the more you want it :/ Have some hard cash, but doesnt help much when the gamestore don't have EVE in)

Yes, it is certainly possible to own more than one ship, but only possible to pilot one at the time.

Many ships have the ability to carry small drones however, which come in a variety of flavours. This is the only way to control multiple craft of any type (except if running multiple accounts!). Different types are scout drones, light, fast attack craft with a small offensive capability; heavy drones, bigger attack craft with a deadly punch; and mining drones which are used to pull in extra ore from asteroids.

There may also appear repair drones and salvage drones in the future, from what I gather.
