It would be kinda silly for them to restrict it to Vista only. I believe I read somewhere it will be working on XP aswell but mayhaps some of the higher features would be a Vista only kinda deal... I don't know how it all works though, sorry.
Nope you don't need Windows Vista. Gaute said in an interview that the game will be compatible with both versions but will use the new features available to Vista. It is also being developed for the next version of DirectX but will also be compatible with the current version.
"Being a Vista Showcase means several things for us. First off, it gives us access to early versions of the DirectX10 software and hardware. Thus we may make the game focused on these areas, implement new effects, ready the game for faster rendering etc. Within this context we are also considering carefully which features we could add to the title to really exploit the benefits of DirectX10. The game will also be fully playable with DirectX9 as well."

They just signed with MS and MS is being very adamant about everything coming out that they are endorsing to be Vista only so I wouldn't be to confident on that.

Or you could read the plentifull interviews stating that it will be backwards compatible with XP, while still using Vistas feature.
I know rumors are more fun but there's a link 2 or 3 posts up that makes the facts real easy to obtain.

Public corporate statements mean little to me. They last until the company changes it's mind or MS changes it's mind about how Funcom will design it. And don't even say MS hasn't ever done that before...

And you are saying only SOE has ever mis-lead it's customer base? I wasn't even referring to just SOE with my statement. There is nothing to heal, it's called common sense.

Funcom I'm sure is well aware that that not everyone can or will switch to Vista when the game goes public. They are not going to cut their own throats by limiting their playerbase right from the get-go. Microsoft involvement or not. After many years of playing AO and seeing how they operate, I have total faith in Funcom and am not worried about any outside influence causing disruption in their plan of development. Funcom is very protective of their properties, so no matter what Billy boy thinks, Microsoft will not have anything to do with how this game is developed.
