Japanese news website Nikkei Net has reported, as partially translated by consumer website IGN, that developer Square Enix has plans to release a sequel to the PC, PlayStation 2, and most recently Xbox 360 massively multiplayer role-playing game (MMORPG), Final Fantasy XI. According to the report, the new MMORPG is in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows Vista platforms. Details are scarce, and it is currently unknown if the game will be a direct sequel, or, like other single player Final Fantasy games, will be set within its own self-contained universe that is altogether separate from Vana'diel (Final Fantasy XI's setting).

I've always wondered about this...
Good post amigo, it's about time we get a real thread in here instead of the "Should I even try this?" "Is this worth it?" "I'm thinking about it."
Forty three threads with those titles a week.
Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
Neptus - WoW - Detheroc
On the other hand? I like FFXI alot and I've left it once already for WoW.. which was a stupid mistake. I still haven't experienced all there is in FFXI, I don't want everyone switching over on me when I haven't even experienced all the game yet!

From what I hear, Ring of Dominion is almost exactly like FFXI game play wise. Very few skills and attributes, so there isn't too much variability for each class. Not sure about the long waits to find a party, certainly hope that's gone.
Not aware of any other MMOs that SE is developing right now.

No Square-Enix has next-gen MMORPG in development for Windows Vista and next gen consoles.(No title name yet though) Fantasy Earth is more PvP based from what I hear.

Square Enix today announced the transfer of the administration duties
for Fantasy Earth: Ring of Dominion to Gamepot as of November 1st. The
PC-based MMORPG was originally released on February 23rd by Square
Enix. Furthermore, Gamepot will introduce an item-based payment system
versus the current monthly usage fees.
Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion is already the third online
game Square Enix has cancelled recently. After transferring the
administration rights of EverQuest 2's Japanese version to Sony Online
Entertainment, the company announced the cancellation of Dirge of
Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII's online component as of September 29th.
Final Fantasy XI and Front Mission Online are the company's two remaining MMORPGs in Japan.
