Granted the last time I played was in January 2005 and I only had a level 21 troll shaman before I quit the game. I was thinking of coming back and playing on a realm with some real life friends, but I wanted to ask you guys what are your opinions.
Is it too little, too late to go back to WoW even though I only had a low level character? Will I just get bored to death and quit again before leveling to 60?
Your thoughts?
Thanks.

You may have a better experience playing with friends. Imo, playing an MMO is primarily about player interaction.
Having said that, if you were bored with the game before chances are you'll be bored still. The general mechanics of the game have changed little. I'm not sure if Battlegrounds were implemented prior to your departure, but they can be fun.
My advise, see if you can find a trial account to play on.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Well that is a bit too early... think you will gonna have enough fun until you are lvl 60.
At least to me it was a lot fun till lvl 60.
But unfortunately at lvl 60 you will regognize how extremly repetetive this game is. And it got a too extrem linear gameplay...
Why would you get bored if your going to play with real life friends? If anything, it will make WoW ten times better because of that reason alone.
I still attribute most of my good times in WoW to the people I was playing with. I've always said, one of WoW's greatest weaknesses is it's complete dependence on larger groups to have fun at the end game, if you got that, then your set all the way through.
So yeah, go play, find a class you can get into, craft if you want, get into the community, travel around, explore, take your time and most of all, have fun.
Worse case scenario, at the end of the month if your not having a decent time, make the peon cry and call it a day, you've lost $15 and your further along then you are now.
Pretty easy decision if you ask me.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
I have a lvl 51 Druid and a lvl 50 Mage and a lvl 21warlock. I really really cant be bothered to get them to 60, I am actually having a break from it, even with some good friends there, the linear and repetetive game gets to you after a while (thanks for the words there Arisian, spot on)
I belive that you shpuld get a trial account code and try it again, as I see more and more people leaving, or taking breaks as it just gets boring
How do you like those classes?
That was going to be my next question which is, what race/classes do you guys recommend are the most versatile and most fun even at the end game lvl 60?
So unless you want to raid or really want to try out Mauradon or Dire Maul, then expect it to be however you remember it except that TM/SS fights are pretty much gone.

I like Druids, but I seem to be in the vast minority (according to the poll on this forum like 5% agree with me). Although in good conscience I can't reccomend them since you are generally forced into healing and most ppl are a-holes when you try to get anything other than healing gear. If you do choose a druid you will need to research ahead of time and specifically state exactly what gear you will be rolling on and then refuse to go if they disagree or you will get too much BS from people about rolls. I am not exaggerating I have personally seen rogues refuse to give melee leather and rings to druids who won rolls for their feral set.
As for end-game there is no class or race for me since raiding is the absolutely least enjoyable activity I have every done in any MMO. There is no way I would pay money to do it, infact you would need to pay me to do it. I would rather mine in Eve than raid. Also there is no such thing as versatile for end game in WoW. Raids are designed for min/max hive-like specialization, pick what role you want to do and understand that is all you will ever do over and over again. So if you think druids are fun and versatile (which they are) it doesn't matter for end game because you will be healing and if you are a mage you spam frostbolt or you spam decurse. You are just a face in the crowd there are too many exact clones of you (i.e. 4-5 other mages outfitted basically the same in addition to all the other classes with functional overlap) to require any versatility. You will use 2-5 powers over an entire raid and will only use 1-2 or maybe three on any given boss encounter.
Leafy's Guide to the Zen Druid
If you're thinking about choosing a Druid, check out the above link. I've adopted that build, and mentality, with my druid and I can't speak enough about it. When someone asks me about my build I respond 'I'm a Resto/Feral build with equipment to do both tanking, dps, and healing'. Typically the group is a little weary, but that's quickly solved after a few minutes in the instance.
The 'Zen' build also allows me to be more effictive in PvP. With the added stealth and movement bonuses, I've been able to raid a number of towns and cities; slipping by the citizens and guards.
If you decide to take this build, you'll want to find a mod that allows you to easily switch gear. Ace Wardrobe is a decent mod.

But in a 5 man what are you more likely to get a rogue or a priest? The problem isn't that people told me to heal the problem is that I was often the only decent option as main healer. Even with my talent spec most shamans are not quite up to Main heal (a few are), so unless I got a preist or another druid I was pretty much Main Heal. I could and did play DPS, Main tank, and Main heal and did it well. But unless you actively refuse the Main Heal roll and purposely work your group getting mechanics in a certain way you will Main Heal 70% or the time or more. I even started just refusing any group that wanted me to main heal unless I really needed the run because I was so tired of it. Even then there are just so many people who keep asking and 90% they are asking for healers, even if they know a druid can do other things fine, they still need healers.
I'm not saying people will force you to heal. That's crap, you are a healer, you have the power not them. That you can be forced into anything like that is an illusion. Just negotiate for what you want they need you more than you need them. Most druids forget that. Like I said in my post above research what you want, figure out how you want to play and then, before the run starts, lay down the law. If they don't like it tell em to get lost, your a healer and a tank, they need you not the other way around. But in the end 50% of the time I just was like fine I don't want to wait around forever I will main heal lets go.
