Welcome to the boards Stunt. Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you've never played an MMO before. That said I would start easy with World of Warcraft. People don't like it here (and I'll be flamed for this ) because it brings nothing new to the genre of gaming and its fairly simplified to cater to younger crowds, but this also makes it a very good game to start out with. I personally had fun with WOW for awhile, and the game has almost no learning curve so you can just pick it up and play.
That is a very difficult question you ask. Currently I'm basicly addicted to Guild Wars but to say that GW is the best MMORPG would go a bit far. I think there can be no proper answer to this; any answer to this question is bound to be subjective.
Basicly, I think that there are a lot of MMORPG's out there and different ones appeal to different sort of people. Different games have different things to offer.
Wow is a good choice for a beginning, fileplanet have a trial i believe. One thing though, what kind of gaming are you into? If your into space/scifi then wow will not fit you and you'll be disappointed. Maybe tell us some of the games you really enjoyed and we can narrow down some choices for you. Welcome to the forums btw

To each their own.
I would say EverQuest 2 is better then World of Borecrap, but then that's my opinion.
Each person likes a different thing.
The simple minded and younger people tend to love WoW, the more mature people tend to go with EQ2... and the people who actually like to THINK tend to play Eve-Online.
The WOW kiddies that try EVE think it's the worse thing ever... it's not action packed like a FPS game. There's a lot of thinking...
So I would suggest trying out some trials before you set your mind.

All of the current games have serious flaws that give them a playability cap of 2 months. Your best chance is a free game where you dont mind being bored - I would suggest Anarchy Online.

Alright, a lot of people on the forums have been complaining about people asking for MMO suggestions. I don't have a problem with most, but simply asking for "the best MMO" isn't going to get you very far. You need to try and consider what you would like to see in the game, if you haven't tried one before, ask your RL friends. Maybe they play one they'll get you into.
But seriously, come back when you figure out what kind of commitment you want to make: Are you looking for a very roleplay oriented community? Are you hardcore and into huge raids? Do you want to be able to make unique items or simply enjoy grinding for rare items? Do you only play now and then and want to be able to keep up with other players? Do you want a player based or a more simple, npc based economy? Do you want really good graphics or would you even be willing to do a 2D or a MUD? Do you want to pay a monthly subscription? Are you willing to buy the game first, or simply want a fully free game to play?
When you can answer these questions, tell us, and we'll answer your question.

Guild wars in my personal opinion. But regardless i would suggest seeing how much time you have to play an mmo. What you like in other games you have played (ex: you liked killing other players in say an FPS so you want to try a pvp heavy game). I would also suggest trying out free trials of different games and deciding on one. Fansites are a great place to find info.

I don't play WOW I agree it is boring , But I do understand it has over 6 million subscribers and atleast active players in the hundreds of thousands. . There are bound to be immature players running around in mass amounts . But judging people and their intelligence on their form of entertainment , may be a bit simple minded don't you think ?
EQ2 really isn't all that much different from WOW from a gameplay stand point , The main differences are in an artistic nature IMO .

The best MMORPG out there right now is no doubt Everquest 2.
However, there are several promising MMORPGs comming out probably at the end of this year or begining of next year.
Keep an eye out for Vanguard SOH, Darkfall, Age of Conan, Pirates of the Burning Sea and Heros Journey are all seems to be very promising.
