This may be long, but hear me out.
Asheron's Call had the best PVP (Darktide Server) of any MMORPG i have ever played (currently bored out of my mind with WoW's PVP). My question is this: is there any current or upcoming game that will have true PVP? I'm not talking about watered down capture the flag, battlegrounds crap, but true world PVP.
In Asheron's Call, PvP was exciting because you had to fight for the town you wanted (No NPC guards that will keep spawning out of no where). When you died, you had a chance to lose some of your best weapons/items... but on the other hand, you had the chance of getting another person's items by killing them. Your reputation wasn't a progress bar, but amongst the community. It also had true world PVP as in you could be attacked by anyone, anytime, at any place, at any time and this made you always watch your back and not run foolishly into a town occupied by another guild that doesn't like yours. When someone pissed you off, you rocked their world and took their items and gold to rub it in their face. Guilds were not just a way to get phat l33t epics while slaving yourself over and over into a chore instance, but guilds in Asheron's Call meant protection, good leveling spots (because you protected them), and trade.
Yea, obviously i'm trying to find an Asheron Call like game, but i really can't find one and no one plays AC1 anymore. Please help!

Im with you jared, I've been searching for the same thing but so far nothing has turned up.
Try Lineage 2 and Shadowbane.
Hope for Darkfall to be released well and the beta in Q4 this year (this still right?) to provide a similiar experience. Or a few of the other games going along similiar lines in dev.
There is always EVE Online.

I just hope that the next good skill based game will have an open PvP server. I know that no major production will develop a full scale PvP game. There just aren't enough players who would enjoy a game like AC Darktide. I loved Darktide. The politics in that game was INTENSE. There was a real "Honor System" and "Faction system" in place and they were completely invented and handled by the players. There were real player wars for control of towns/hunting areas, and they lasted for weeks, not hours.
That being said, Darktide was a mean game. You had to really enjoy the challenge, and you really needed to know AC if you wanted to play Darktide. The people who chose to play on that server had a very hard existance. I just don't think we have 500K gamers who would be into that kind of game. Lifestone camping was an amazing game mechanic, and it will never make it back into another game. It's just too tough. Raiding an xp dungeon is hellafun. Fighting PKs and Tuskers while you have Imperil and Bludgeon Vuln VI cast on you is just wild, but 90% of gamers would just get mad and quit if they had been ganked while they were trying to level up (so they could outlevel their enemies and go gank them, of course). I played with some of the worst assholes on Darktide that I have ever met. I also played with some of the nicest and most talented gamers in the genre. I can get together with an old AC friend and swap storied for literally hours. I haven't really found that in any other game. That says something about the depth and intensity of DT.
Which FF Character Are You?
wurmonline has complete full PvP(when you die all items stay on corpse and are lootable, lose exp). though there have the archtype 2 sides fighting each othere and one bad side(resulting in three though the other good side has yet to be implemented do to only have about 100-200 peps on). and its very very heavly crafting, community, town(you can make your own buildings and towns litterly on 99.9999% of the map).
its works on any system liniux, apple, windows, and very lowend systems. ie mine from quite a few years ago with no upgrades.
though i don't play it anymore because well it can get boring if you don't spend over 20-30 hrs a week on it. but it is cheap $5(euro) a month.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

You should check out Shadowbane, its open pvp, with player owned towns, and now its free to play. Cant lose.
The reason why there isn't many games like that is because of griefers. The majority of the MMO playerbase do not want PvP the way you want it, but would rather have it in an instanced or flagged type format. However, there are some games out there worth watching. Darkfall and The Chronicle both fit the exact description you are looking for with The Chronicle fitting it better. Unfortunately, The Chronicle is 9 months past the initial said release date and Darkfall missed their release date by a couple years I think (not sure).
The other alternative you have is to lower your standards just a bit and try to find a UO server that is like what you want or maybe try Shadowbane.
As it stands right now,. Guildwars has rock solid pvp,but its just team pvp,The depth of the pvp is great tho,and the skills system is vary free form.Guildwars is a easy ride to lvl20,(max level) but dont let that fool you,by the time you hit max level you will still have less then half of the skills.
Sadly its not open pvp and theres no politics.theres not really any crafting and dieing dont meen jack,.But the pvp it self is awsome and one of the best I have seen.but like anything else,to much of the same thing gets boring, and the missions will only intrest you a few times.
Roma victor is the next open pvp game, with indepth crafting.its allso a skill based game that offers freedom to make any type of hybrid character you want. Its allready starting to develop politics and some groups of playters are all ready starting to controll popular places.
The eye candy in Roma victor is a bit lacking but you get used to it right away, its not gamestoping. Its in its first week of release and like anygame is in a bit of a rocky start.few more weeks and the bugs should be gone.
What it really, REALLY, comes down to is this:
For a gaming company, from a buisness POV - is there MONEY in making a PvP oriented MMORPG?
Sorry, but it has been proven by the market that MORE money is to be made in a PvE oriented mmoprg, than one that is PvP oriented. Heck, your own favorite game AC proves this. It had only 1 server that had what you want. The fact that AC did NOT have this on more servers proves there is very little money to be made in what you like.
AC itself was not a PvP oriented game. The majority of it was PvE oriented. AC simply had ONE SERVER that was PvP oriented. BTW... I too liked and enjoyed AC. Such a shame their company to this day refuse to market it. *sniff*
Runescape is the only MMORPG that comes closest to what you once experienced. But alas, the graphics don't stand up to 100% pay to play mmorpgs heheh. In RS the winner of a battle no matter what gets to loot items from the loser. Death in RS is the 2nd most brutal out of all mmorpgs currently out. SfP (Strive for Power) has the most brutal death ever in the history of mmorpgs - which is of course... permadeath.
I gotta admit the best PvP game ever will allways be Lineage 2 with out no DOUBT killing anyone that leaves the village/town/city is amazing makes it more realistic! With the klarma etc... AMAZING
Lets put it as this way I am a L2 ADDICT.
Mwahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahaaaa! XD
