Why did you start playing online games?

paranoidpvpparanoidpvp Member Posts: 539

Everyone has their own reasons, boredom, loneliness, they hate their parents and are determined to stay on the compy as long as possible. I am interested to find out why people these days seem to be so addicted to online games, and specifically GW in this case. What was your first "favorite" game, what attracted you to that game, and why do we seem to always come back to the good ol' compy for more? Please post your thoughts, I am extremely interested to see people's replies and I hope this becomes a popular thread.

i have been playing computer games since zxspectrum , i learnd programing , for me it was a game too .
computers are just a great mind ocupation
after internet comes out , for about 3 years i dont have internet at home , becose i was living with my parants and they didnt pay for it .
and then i start paying for internet , the world changed , MIRC suced me into virtual reality
amazing how computers got filled with humans , i no longer did anything that didnt had something to do with comunicating with people , after long 8 hours runs chating in MIRC , i found forums
as for games , i played almost all FPS that where ever made , from doom 1 to prey today :D
internet made FPS a lot diferent ofcorse , when i start playing UT2003 online , hardcore playing , 8 hour runs , it was obvius that people who play online were much more skilled in FPS compared to my friends that only played with the computer on single player mode.

games becoming online was a huge step in the game evolution , player skill skyrocket

today i play online games for the same reason i played single players game , but now they are much better , filled with people

    GO MMOs !!!!!

I've started playing video games with the Atari, I followed the current since then, from nintendo to Sega, then to N64 while never forgetting my good old 386. I still remember me in the office of my parents, a long time ago, trying to figure how could I make a funny game out of QBasic putting some rectangles and circles on the screen. MMORPG is just the new step, so I followed it. I started playing Star Wars Galaxies with one of my friend. He was a real fan of Star Wars, he had everything about it, I'm sure you know the type. Then the Combat Upgrade appeared, the game became just crap after that... So I turned myself on WoW, this game was amazing! I played and I played... and I played... But then, when you got 4 60s, the only good things you can now find are in MC, BWL or AQ, this only mean 1 thing, you gotta have 39 other people wishing to go there and good enough to get past the first boss. You dont get 39 friends online everyday I'll tell you that, so you found yourself a good guild. Then again, theres isnt always 39 other ppl wishing to get at the same time. So, the officers in the guild make a calendar. Well, after some time, my schedule was full for the next month with just working and playing WoW(oh yeah, and working means you miss some raids, so ppl like you less...). Then, I started to think that I had friends, I have a girlfriend which is starting to get really upset cuz the only thing I do is raiding... I quit, and trust me, it wasnt that easy. And look at me now, back in the game, but with GW now, tryin to control myself. Dam, thats a dam long post, and I'm not done yet, dont wanna bother either, hehe. Sry for the long post and thx for giving me the opportunity to talk about it, seems I needed it considering the lenght of the post, hehe.

    Thanks, Heyian

Whenever i step outside, somebody claims to see the light
It seems to me that all of us have lost our patience.
    'cause everyone thinks they're right,
And nobody thinks that there just might
Be more than one road to our final destination--

I started with RS, went to MU Online, went back to RS, went back to MU, went to maplestory, went back to MU, went back to RS and then finally found GW, I've been playing it ever since. There was a long time where I enjoyed the idea of an MMORPG but just couldn't find the one for me, this caused all the jumping back and fourth between games. I started playing MMOs because it was a good way to have fun, interact with people and be as lazy as possible all at the same time. When I found GW I was amazed at how much fun it was compared to other games, little grind, great storyline, awesome graphics and it could actually be played on my machine. I'm 13 months and counting as a member of GW and I'm glad it I was able to find it. Other games just didn't do it for me, poor graphics and boring grind always annoyed me and I never really got settled into the real MMO world. Although online games are now probably my greatest addiction in a way I think it may have helped me stay away from other addictions that may have come my way if I actually had a life. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing but I think I made the right choice...?

chosing guildwars was the best choice ::::20::
guildwars forces people to interact , i think it was genius the way they made it that way.
not like most mmorpg i have seen where you can do most of it alone , you can also group , but its not like guildwars , where combining team mates skills is where the magic is .
if you use the henchs you are stuck to a few skills that the henchs bring , sure you can do most of the pve side , but becomes old very fast , team up with people , learn all the random knolage that is new everyday , endless combinations.

im also 13 months old in guildwars ::::19::

For me, I think a better question is "Why am I STILL playing online games" concidering that horrible experiences I've had.

I started online with Diablo. I made a Rogue that beat the game on all difficulty settings. In the period of time that took me, I saw hacks, cheats, PK'ers, trash talkers... basically, everything bad you could imagine in an online game. But, I did meet some cool people, some that cheated and some that didn't, who helped me with that game and were fun to play with.

Then came Knight Online, where I was introduced to my first taste of "real" MMO. And I learned about spawn camping, player sellers, kill stealers and chat spammers. I became very frustrated with that game after only a few times playing it, even though I had met some really cool people.

Then, Guild Wars. And even now, I find a lot of the same kinds of people I've had to deal with and hate dealing with, the low lifes that can't understand that there's a person on the other end of that character. Yet, I enjoy the game completely.

As to why I started, it sounded cool at the time. I could play with people millions of miles away instead of splitscreen on my Super Nintendo. That was mind blowing back then.

i think that becose internet is so new , most people are trying it for the first time , many people that use internet dont even know what a mmo is.

i think you will not find a comunity like the old days SWG had ever again , it as reached the masses

guildwars as a good guild and allience system , the possibility of having 1000 people in the same closed chat room , is imo a good social filter , the responcibility of leaders and officers to recruit people that enjoy playing the same way , in terms of peace and respect can make the game experience very diferent

I didn't start being addicted to anything. I was just bored. I live in a small town with nothing to do but drink and hear people talking about cheating on their husbands/wives. Few people worth talking to around these parts and they are very hard to find. either they are well off and treat you like the scum off your boot or they are the low class trying so hard to look good they will step on anyone to do so.

That being the case I went online to socialize and play a game with a good story. That really is all there is to it. I play alot cause I hadn't anything else to do after I got off work... least the last 6 years was like that. Now due to unemployment and a family I have to contend with, I have hardly any time to play. Again it's about choices and due to having a family I put my family first though I will admit I try to get in game time anytime there is downtime at the home. But not at the cost of my family or the job I hope to someday get my hands on. =/

Least your priorities are straight and I applaud that man cause it is NOT easy to break off a game you like.. too bad for a casual like myself the dullness hit after my second level 60 char (had 1 60 alliance and one horde I just had them go and do the other races beggining quests then quit.) apprently I saved myself some time doing that and I quit WoW. =) Guild Wars now just because I cannot afford online dues. After factions tho I seriously doubt I will buy the new expansion unless they can give me more than the same.

Guild Wars is alot like AC/DC.. they throw in some new songs rehash the old ones and call it an album.. Guild Wars is doing the same thing. Might work with Fighters I do not think it will work as an onine medium tho.

OMG the 'original' Star Wars Galaxy.. for all it's glitches and silliness was so far removed from any other genre. I have NEVER 'lived' in an mmo like I did SWG it was so sweet before the major changes and the mob killing 'player cities' I would have never tried World of Warcraft if they hadn't fudged up SWG.. sigh.. I remember the friends my avatar lived next too a musician and a droid engineer and I had an animal trainer friend living on another planet.. omg good times all.

been playing games since little (early 80s), sometimes more than others, but overall, I've been a fairly avid gamer over the years.

I've had way too many favorite games to remeber.  I think the 2 most significant ones for me were Riven and SWG pre-CU.

I do it to escape reality, that's all.  Life's one big disappointment in humanity in this 21st century, so the less I deal with it the better.  Can't wait till the day we have induced comatose-like sleep with pleasant dreams forever.  Plug me in pls!

not necessarily comp game but my first online game was ff11, loving the ff games i wanted to try it out and loved it.. alot. i played it for 2 yrs than was getting tired of it, if it wasnt for the friends i made on the game i wouldve quit earlier. But what started me on MMOs was probably me playing ffs leading to ff11 and wanted to play more mmos to meet more ppl.

Its kinda wierd, but ps2 games kinda got boring after a while.  i am in to rpges and playing online games where u can make money and become powerfull, its just really fun for me.  When i was like 11, my friend introduced me to runescape, and i went all crazy and had no life for a long time. I then started Guild Wars (runescape sucks) and then following to factions.  I am trying to make some money in factions, but i havnt found the best places yet, ive only had the game for 2 months anyway.  Now since i am a little stuck, i started playing maplestory (i know, i know, stupid, but strangly fun) and thats what im currently into.  If any1 wants to help me make somemoney on Guild wars factions, or start a buisness or seomthing to make some money, pm me, my sn is John The Vampire.  thanks!

My first online game was Team Fortress Classic. I started playing it simply because it came with my copy of half-life. I tried it and i was intantly hooked.

My first, and so far only, MMO was Guild Wars i got it because my friend got it and loved it and once again instantly hooked.

I play online games to kill other people without the whole jail thing...

    EDIT:

My very first fav game would be Warcraft 2 BNE simply because you get to vs other players, testing my skill on others gives me alot of joy however MMO's have changed my interest in RTS and FPS games due to it being on a more massive scale that a top of roughly 4-64 players a game or less depending on the game.

Also I prefer GW over other MMO's because the random arena allows you to fight completely random people for a few minutes and you arent stuck vsing the same people for an extended period of time.

On the topic of "why do we seem to always come back to the good ol' compy for more?" simply because its competition against other without having to go through serious physical training.
