Based on UO and other past experiences with online games, many times one has to create two chars, a mule and the fighting character. The mule makes money and develops skills to make money (mining herbalism or whatever), giving the money to the other character to develope fighting skills. The other character (non-mule) develops these skills to adventure and PvP with.
In Eve do you need a Mule? Can I just start fighting for a corporation and work my way up the chain from there? Is the income from coporate missions sufficient to support a PvPer?

hm that first question
I gotta say that depends on your playstyle
Alot of miners get a extra account " mule" for hauling.
Missions when you get nice agents give nice income and no need for " mule"
But PVP who are pirates hm tend too have a mule account they sit up in empire and mine
ores with.
Corp mission I take you mean NPC corp then in other hand if you in a corp "playerbased corp" they tend too provide with ships and guns if they realy want you
ps I dont provide with ships too my members in EVE Online.

Well, in any game a second account is useful.
One could be your hauler, and one could be your miner.
One could be your pirate, and one could be your hauler.
One could be your _____, and one could be your _____.
Mules always help. That's why they're called mules. For me though, mine actually took away from the immersion, so I just stopped using him. I kind of like having to deal with the shit I sow, but that's just me. They make the game easier, and I want a challenge. Without a mule, Eve is everything I ask for.

There are two types of people in this world - people that suck... and me.
As said mules always help. In Eve however there's two dimensions in which they can be usefull:
- as addition to your other character with a different skillset so you can a good alrounder without having to compromise on specialisation.
- as addition to your other character with the same base skillset so that you can spread your activity across two different geographical areas without needing to undertake long travels. (in Eve travel is an actual hurdle other then in nearly all other games).
But in general, any skillset in Eve can make good cash as long as you derive income from an activity that matches the skills. A combat specialist can make money by farming NPC missions or spawns, a miner makes money mining, producer makes it producing and trader makes it in trading (actually, anyone can make it in trading).
So all in all Eve does give a benefit to multiple-account users, but only the benefit of scale, not neccesarily one to do with needing one set of skills for fun and another for income.
However, if u have 2 accounts, then yeah, extra char you can play at the same time as your main will indeed be very helpfull for hauling/defending your main char or doing missions or for many other reasons.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

By Mule I was meaning two characters on one account. One to make money and one to have fun. Two accounts...wow that is something.
Can you run two acounts off the same computer?
I started Eve just about a month and a half ago.
I want a second account already...not just for the mule aspect....but to have another way to explore and learn the game universe....I really want to explore the science/trade/mining aspect.
But I had to put the smackdown on myself to not get a second account until I find a job LOL. I just got out of the military, so I am in that transition phase right now...money is OK but not good enough to justify paying for 2 accounts at this time for a game.
Its not a good idea to have 2 characters on one account. Doesnt make sense since you have no storage limit inside the base AMD you share skill learning between characters on one account (meaning only 1 character can learn new skill, the other must wait)
I doubt you can effectively run 2 Eve clients on one PC and ALT+TAB between accounts

in a nutshell, if you're going to mule.. you're gonna have to up 2 subscriptions
can do it with one, but at that point your mule begins to negatively effect your main thus negating the reason to use a mule to begin with.

I am going to disagree on this one, I got 3 accounts and I run them concurrently on my machine. I would not go into fleet PvP with all 3 clients open. However if you are ratting, hauling and mining at the same time it works. It all comes down to stats on your CPU.
Also the difference with the mules in eve and the mules in lets say UO is that you don't only have to use the mule in eve to mine. You can train that character just like your normal character and actually have 2 characters that with their separate income they can cover their costs. So there is actually no limit to what you can use your mule in. While in UO your mule was always only the mule. you could never decide to use the mule and your fighter to go through a dungeon. The mule would not be able to do anything. He would just be standing there.
I have a mule(alt) which I use for mining, missions and fighting. So I don't consider them a mule as they can serve different purposes.
