What The Public Craves From A MMORPG!

FarseenFarseen Member UncommonPosts: 344

Alrite, basically, I would personally like to know what everyone on this site really wants from a MMORPG because i can tell you straight up, i want Customization. Thats what im into MMORPGs for....customization. Games like FFXI, Horizons and SWG just didn't cut it for me. Yes, FFXI and SWG had crazy graphics but , everyone looked the same when they wore armor =(

Now, Ultima Online on the other hand knew what people wanted. You could dye anything you wanted! Customization was incredible! The chances of ppl looking the same were SO slim regardless of the amount of people playing.

Thats my little opinion, lets hear it from you guys!

If you are looking for customization, I would recommend either Everquest 2 or City of Heroes.  Those two games are the top candidates for customization in my opinion.  City of Heroes has talked about choosing your costume outfit for your personal hero character and have said that there are tons of different color/costume customizations.  EQ2 has so many races that it will be an incredibly diverse world.

Customization is important to me but is not at the top of what I look at.  I thought I had finally found the game for me in Horizons.  Beta was fun, I was looking forward to release, and I bought the game.  Great for a little bit, yes, but there was NO high end content.  I was extremely dissapointed when my character got past the beginning phases and I found that not many parts of the game are meant for high level characters.  So I found out that Horizons was not for me, and I cancelled my subscription.  The graphics had also always been something of a bother to me about Horizons, too.  Not top of the line at the moment, which is not a good sign if they hope to keep the game going for awhile.  The quality of graphics is more at the level of DAoC, which came out several years ago.  After I cancelled I needed to find which upcoming game I would get, which was not an easy choice.

Basically, I could easily limit my choices down to three different games: Everquest 2, Ultima X Odyssey, and Lineage 2.  WoW didn't make it because I have always hated Blizzard Entertainment and their style.

Everquest 2 is a top-notch game.  It has all the obvious things that and MMO needs: 1)INCREDIBLE graphics, they look so real I find myself just staring at the screenshots image 2) Races.....this has always impressed me about the original EQ also.  So many different races to choose!  Whether you prefer evil or good, they will have a race for you, and all of them have their own special abilities and specialties 3) Promise of new content....MMO's are supposed to give frequent updates to their game to keep people occupied with new things to do, and also to have expansion packs for the large updates.  The original EQ did a great job with adding new stuff to the game...yes, i agree, some of their later expansions hurt the game, but the first couple were great.  You can rest assured that EQ2 will deliver a steady stream of new content and also a LOT of high level capabilities

Alright, Ultima X Odyssey:  Ultima Online was the biggest surprise for an online game, I think.  It shocked me to see how good and fun the gameplay options were.  If you are a more casual gamer, UO allowed for easier playing for those kind of people.  You can bet that UXO will use some of the old features of UO and add on them....This was the top reason I am considering this game:respect.  Because of UO, I will probably end up buying UXO...if it proves to dissapoint me, then obviously it will lose my respect :(.............UXO also has a very different storyline, which is quite interesting.  From what I've read about some of their features, they have a lot planned for this game...and a lot that's coming out with the release.  I'd say UXO is one step behind EQ2, but it gets my second place spot.

In third place is Lineage 2....some of you might be surprised by my order of rank, but Lineage 2 needs to prove still that it is worthy.  Perhaps only beta will tell...I guess I'll have to wait on that.

Well, sorry for rambling, I think that covers it.

    Yeah man, i totally agree.

I played Horizons too, but damn it got COMPLETELY and UTTERLY boring in like 2 weeks. I couldn't stand mining the same stuff over and over, and everyone lookes the same!!

One question, how the hell did you cancel your account? Did they make you call them!?

Customization is definatly a major plus. That is one of the reasons why I'm dissapointed with Lineage II. There is very little customization and everyone looks the same.

Another thing that is really important to me is content. When I sign on to an MMORPG, I want to sign on to a living, breathing world that is full of things for me to do. Lots of different quests, missions, factions PvP, etc. I do not want to create my content because that usualy boils down to either kill something or craft something.

I also hate leveling threadmills. I mean, once in a while it's OK but doing it for hours on end is just boring.

There cancellation process was totally messed up.  They tried to make it as confusing as possible so maybe they could keep people playing (didn't work for me image)

I ended up calling them believe it or not....I also asked them to make the cancellation process a lot easier online...maybe they have by now.

Game like City of Heroes will host truly wide range of character customization at least lookwise.

If you've missed it check it out. City Of Heroes is planning for mega hit. This is not hyping but it's quite possible that this game can come on top in US in term of subscription number along with WoW. You just can tell by the level of activity going on its official site forum. Last time I visited there, there were quite a number of people simultaneously browsing the forum and the beta hasn't even started.

Some even reported that there are even handful of number of Celebrities who are actual posters in CoH forum such as Robin Williams, Alan Cumming from X-Men, etc...

Yeah, I think "customization" sums it up quite nicely.  More customization = greater depth of gameplay.  The only problem with that, is that many newer players would find it too difficult.  It is a catch-22, I guess.

    Played these MMORPG's:
    AC1/AC2/AO/DAoC/EQ/ATITD/FFXI/UO
    Beta'd: RYL/SWG/E&B

    Hmm...what i crave,

    1) Customization: I want a game where you would look unique and could rarely find people looking the same like you. Not games where as long as u are the same race/class as me, you would look the same. And also i want to be able to have different skills/stats frm pple of the same class, not all same class chars are clones of each other.

    2) Content: Good content in game such as solo quests and group quest that are fun to do, not frustrating. And no random quests generator pls, cause it would be the same thing over and over again. Its better to have more npcs for quests then 1 npc that generates random quests everytime u go to him. And constant update on in-game content by the devs is a must.

    3) Soloing/grouping: People should be able to have fun solo-ing or grouping. The game shouldn't be design in the way where u MUST group in order to lvl [i heard that ff1 is this way]. Solo players could go and hack some easy monsters while groups could venture into dungeons for those higher lvl mobs.

    4) PvP: im not a pvp type of guy but i would like some pvp in a game. Don't really like full pvp cause it would be lame to be constantly pked by higher lvls when u are low lvl.

5)Crafting: Able to craft items that are unique and i would feel special to hold the weapon/armor i crafted myself. The feeling of the hardship of crafting a rare item and finally bein able to use it is great.

    6) Guild: Yea guild wars and being able to go after boss mobs with ur guild is wat i want too. And guild customization where u have ur own guildhouse, guild emblen etc.

Currently the mmorpg im waiting for is WoW. Though i might try CoH, L2, EQ2 and Ultima X when these come out.

-Monthly or even better, weekly events put on by the developers.

-PVP is a must. Guild Wars, or open pvp are the two that I prefer.

-Good graphics. I hate playing games that look older than 2-3 years.

-Good sound. I can't stand games that have shitty sound effects.

-Enough content to make the game last for years.

-Very little repititous gameplay. Hehe...I don't know if this can be accomplished in an MMORPG, but it would be nice.

-Very intricate player customization. I don't want to be like that guy standing next to me. I want to look different and have different skills than everyone else.

Rats, Jiraiya, you didn't leave me much to add. That's almost exactly what I would write.

I like being able to create a uniquely individual character. There needs to be enough range, both in the appearance, and the skills/specialization, to feel as though I'm an original.

While I do want a game with PvP, it needs to be intelligently limited in opportunity and death penalty so that the game isn't catering to the griefer crowd. Player combat needs to be a fun, competitive thing, not a means for the maladjusted to ruin everyone elses day.

I want a game with story and color. Real content. Not just doing the same thing 100 times over with different names and numbers. Must be many different paths to success. And enough variation to each path to avoid the feeling of repetitive grinding.

I want reasons to hook up with groups, and do group activities. But at the same time I want to be able to log in and have fun when it's just me off exploring on my own.

I enjoy a complex economy. Spending some time playing a market, or in crafting / manufacturing is a great distraction from questing and fighting all the time.

And I like it to be visually appealing. Good game, good mechanics, good story are the baseline yes, but I guess I'm shallow; I like for it to look good too.

I have high hopes for World of Warcraft, they seem to have their heads in the right place. Nothing else is as appealing at the moment. Eve Online was a disappointment.

The first and most basic thing a game needs is server stability.  It helps alot when you don't have people leaving the game on day 1 due to crashes and lag.

Secondly you have to have a decent amount of content aka stuff to do in game.  Developers should realise that you need high level content relatively quickly, and many times get caught sleeping behind the wheel when the hardcore gamers reach level 50 and have nothing to do.

No matter how good an mmorpg might be it needs publicity, and to get asses in the seats. The best game is no fun if noone else is playing it with you.

Graphics in my opinion are less important, not to say I would be content with stick figure gfx(old shadowbane comic comes to mind hehe)

Customer support is very important but I put it outside the ranking.

Nerfing can be truly a heart-attack waititng to happen.  Theoretically devs should get most balancing issues over with during BETA, but that isn't very realistic.  If you nerf then do it quick before people reach high levels with that class.

Sadly as far as nerfing is concerned theres another dimension to it.  Take DaoC Shrouded Isles for example.  Mythic went out of their way not to nerf the CLEARLY overpowered new classes because if they did it would upset new and even soon to be customers who bought SI.  Not sure if BDs have been kicked down a notch yet but wouldn't be surprised if the answer was no.

Yes...i forgot to add server stability is also important. You can't have fun if u dc every 5mins in a game. And graphics.....Hmm something with a decent 3d would do. Don't have to be top-notch state of the art etc etc. By decent standards = you won't feel like turning off ur monitor after looking at it for 10mins. Hmm...thats about it, hope i could see these factors of a game in WoW. If not, i'll try the other titles coming out.

Yeah customization is a really good thing to have in a MMORPG which they hardly ever do.  All you do is look at the lengths people will go in names in mmorpgs to get attention to know how bad its wanted lol...  Let people design their own weapons and stuff... that would be cool

Heres one idea of a MMO I think would be awesome (not perfectly thought out or anything)... Get a first person version of fallout... all the same rules... the perfect mix of levels helping but not making the game.  Make the leveling the same speed as in the single player rpgs (pretty fast).  No level designations on people, all you could see is their name and what they had on and in their hands.  and PERMA DEATH.  Proper restraints on newbie camping of course.    Think about it your a raider, you wander in the wastelands, come across some dude in leather armour, you have leather armour, do you try and gank him?  You try and he kills you in one aimed shot between the eyes and you have to start all over..  People would always stick to factions and pvp would be something rarely risked alone.  Have a serious economic system going.  Itd be awesome.

I have to agree with you all that customization is important and much needed. The latest batch of mmorpg games all seem to have been dumbed down in my opinion. Also wish they could get the balance between craffting and adventuring right as well.

Customization is very very important to everyone I think, but its not just the vanity side to it. Yes its great to look unique with unique weapons and equipment, ect.. but I need more. I need a large variety of professional avenues as well...this to makes someone unique.

AC1 had a flawed xp system but they touched on a good aspect of it all. With a few tweeks it could be grand. With all your XP gained you had to manuley pump it in to the desired skill or attribute; this was in addition to the normal xp gain from skill usage. This system allowed specific specialization in skills and attributes that would aid you in whatever adventurer path you decided to follow. Yes there would be people training the same skills as you, but there would never be 2 people the exact same.

I think we all want the same thing, simply put...we want it all. image And why not...if we are the paying customers, we want EVERYTHING we desire in a MORPG. Its not wrong to ask for the sweetest of graphics, complex character customization, detailed crating system, MoB loot drops, and every other detail that makes a GREAT MORPG. I say be picky and dont settle.

      I just had 6 teeth pulled...drugs.....hrmmmmmmmmimageimage

What i would like form a mmorpg is a reputation lvl, or some other way for people to recognize your character other than looks and name.  It would be cool if people would fear you in PvP because you had a reputation of killing most people you fight against.  I don't think that everyone should look the same, but i also think that whenever you meet someone you should be able to tell if they are a loner, a group player, or even an all out cut throat.  This to me is the customization that i think charcters should have in a good mmorpg.

  • AgamemnonZAgamemnonZ Member Posts: 72

Wow, I never really had a problem with customization o.0

I mean, if every1 looked preciesly the same it would be bad, But every1 being different isnt a must for me. Gameplay goes for above that. The game must keep my attention. If I want to look at every1 how special they look I'll attend a fashion show  or something o.0

A game needs to stay interesting. You should be able to explore new things. keep learning new things about the game. Should be good (mass)PvP. Should be a nice amount of items/armor/weapons and unique/special items which are very rare or hard to craft. Quests are cool as well.  Storyline is a nice add-on.  and very important is: Enough players =D. A MMORPG without enough players is much less fun.

    About Lineage2 having lil customization. They characters might not be able to be customized that much (which comes down to the face/hair style), but the armor and weapons are very very customized. There are soo many amors/weapons. Though some armors might have the same look. But this is because the dev team had to short of a time to create all unique looks for every armor. But every update they add new models so dont worry about that ^^;

And when Lineage II will get cloaks implented you can have your own clan-emblem on it o.0!!! And if the helmets get implented you wont see the head anymore (which is the only minor in the customization).

Alrite, nice. I like to see a lot of people's opinions on what they think of a 'good' MMORPG. Personally, I need to have a lot of customization. Like, not to the extent where i can manuever eyebrows *grins* but enough so that lvl 20 chars dont run around in the same armor =)

Everquest (after UO) was the best at that in my opinion. I was a dwarf warrior, and i got most my quest armor. Only got to like level 18 but i never really did find people who looked the same! It was great! Actually, now that i think of it, i might go back to EQ until EQ2 comes out! lol

As of now, im playing Knight Online. Its a very cool game indeed with some very interesting quests =) But one thing is that i haven't really found any armor that noone else is wearing. There aren't many people in the game to begin with, and yet ppl still look relatively the same. Its a great game regardless. I just reached lvl 21 last night. And have purchased all the armor from the vendor that i can, so i think that after i get this set, there will be some other crazy armor out there =)

Well, thanks for everyon's opinion! see ya gaming.

Yes, I agree with Farseen. Diversity is a key factor in any game. Too many games stick with the cookie-cutter character design and appearance (i.e. DAOC and FFXI). The lack of control in diversity lessens the emersion factor. To me, this feels like I am a clone with no real role in the gameworld.

  • TaskyZZTaskyZZ Member Posts: 1,476

I am learning Direct3D programming right now, and the lack of diverity is caused by the hardware we are using to play the game.

What the game manufacturer has to do is decide what the minimum spec is going to be to play the game.  Let me try to explain:

Let's say they decide that you have to have a 64MB video card to play.  Now, how many people has this cut from being able to play?  Not many hopefully, but some.  Let's say 10%.

Now with that 64MB of ram, they have to be able to put all of the textures (graphics that go on a character or monster or tree, etc. in the game) and the meshes (the actual models that represent the shape of the object) in the video ram of the video card.  If these things are not in video ram then your frame rate slows way way down.

So, now we have you in a zone that has maybe 3 kinds of trees, 12 different monsters.  So, here we have 15 meshes that must be in video memory, and maybe 15 different textures and possibly more that have to all be in video memory.  But, they also have to be able to have EVERY player mesh possible fit into video memory and EVERY player texture, because it is possible a large gathering of characters of different class, race etc. could all show up at the same place.

What this means is, not only does the zones possible objects and monsters have to be in vido memory, but also every possible player character design must be able to fit too.  And if there are 28 different looking plate mail armors, they have to be able to support all 28 of them possibly being on the screen at the same time.  More than likely they can't, and that is why the framerate goes to hell when 50 players get on the screenm at once.  This is not such a bad thing, because you expect poor frame rates when there are HUGE gatherings of players.

BUT, the more variety of armor and weapons and clothing there is, the more chance f overloading the video card even when there are only 8 or 10 players in the same place at the same time because there are a lot more possible combinations of tectures that need to be in your video memory.

If there are 8 players in the same house and each is wearing a different hat, a different pair of shoes, pants, shirt, sword, etc...  We could easily need 64 or more different textures in the video card at the same time.  Would they all fit, it depends on how good they look.  The better they look the larger they are...

So, you can see that they have to make a choice between how powerful the video card MUST be, how many different textures they want to put on the screen, how good those textures look, and how many models should be on the screen.

Or, they can go a different route, they can say, "to play this game, you must have a 128MB vid card", then only about 50% of PC gamers could buy the game.  Or they could go even farther and say, you have to have a 256MB vid card to play this game, and then only 5% of us could buy the game.  It would look great, but not many people would buy it because their video cards could not handle it.

Hope this helps more than confuses.  I slapped it together while sitting here at work.

Diversity in the way your character looks and the way your armaments look and the way your weaponry looks. I find this even more important than the graphics in general. What good is killer 3rd generation graphics if everyone looks pretty much the same in there race level classification.

The other area I feel is most important is the actual skills sets available. I like to see a rich array of skills and abilities to further differentiate one player from another. The more complex the variety the better I like it. The developers seem more interested in dumbing down these games in the hopes of attracting larger audiences. I like to have the ability to plug my xp points in where I deem most important to the development of my character. If I want to have stellar first aid and gumbo cooking skill I want to make that decision for myself. The less character development pathing dictated by the game the better.

I want to always be able to evolve my character more.

I want to be better at what I am doing then folks that dont do it. (exemple, raiders that dont group, PvP players that dont farm stuff, groupers that dont solo, and so on...)
