Veteran Mmorpg Players

Hey guys I have been playing mmorpg for about 7 years now but have been on a break due to time constraints for the past year. I have been reading through alot of threads and noticing the downfalls of many mmo's out right now. Atm im in a bind on choosing which mmo to start up again with. I have tried out a few trials such as:

Eve=seemed great but the thought of mining and pvp only didnt appeal to me

Ao= decent game but graphics extremely outdated, plus i think this came is coming to an end after a good run.

Daoc= same as above, great pvp though.

D&D online is just bad.

COH and COV would have been promising but the repetiveness and no character upgrades (armor, weapons etc.) ruined the game.

EQ2= played trial briefly (post your thoughts)

WoW= was the last mmo i played before my break, must admit it was a good game but had no use at endgame therfore wont be playn it again.

GW= great game but just not indepth enough for me, the player only world and limited classes made it a game to play only once and a while (great game considering no payment though).

Any suggestions on a mmo or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Past MMo's which i truly enjoyed where ( UO, Eq, SWG (my fav. until they destroyed it), WoW until lvl60)

*Some* players are becoming die hard fan bois of the games theyre playing as .. well.. it something to do lol so expect some smart ass responses to some of your comments.

The rest of us are trying to get excited. Part of the enjoying of an mmorpg is the sheer excitement you create within yourself about a game - if youre sub consciously thinking 'oh well its something to do til my gf gets back' then you'll inevitably get bored. Mmorpgs to look out for: Huxley, Star Trek Online, Stargate Worlds.

If youre not really into something coming out soon then jus sit back and chill out til you find a game that gets you going.

A lot of us have spent hundreds of £/$ trying out different games that we werent really too bothered about and as a friendly warning: This is not the way to go but it sounds like youre out of the addiction which gives you a great chance to wait for the next gen of mmorpg without wasting money.

Playing EVE Online and A Tale in the Desert. Just let my 2nd resub on WoW die, and considering my 4th resub on AO.

    hmm.. well

Its true with eve.. I couldnt face going back, I was a smuggler.. got away from the corporate mining after a while! Ive heard that you cant insta-jump anymore using way points set so many clicks after the gate.. used to be great.. without it - What a bore!!

SWG was going well until they issued those little boxes telling people what they had to do to become a jedi.. mine was to be a master of dance.. no joke! That was the end swg for me on the spot..

WoW has been totally engrossing for me.. it has to be the king of MMORPGs, I have many friends who played.. some quiting their jobs to manage guilds etc.. but its died out a bit lately..

So onto a bit of Villains ftw... great laugh.. not got too far, still enjoying it although not much depth..

    I await the Burning Crusade

yet.. I feel strangly drawn to the Archlord.. hope its not another Codemaster factory mmorpg.. they seem to be pumping them out like crazy.. rf online was a pile of poh

its gonna be all about level 70!

haha. Master Dancer takes 72 hours AFK. By the sounds of it anything that box said other than 'YOU WIN! WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY AGAIN?' Would have crushed you.

Heh, I'm honestly waiting around for WAR - Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning. I think it's going to be the best that comes out.

Other than that I'm going to wait and check the ones posted above.. continuously searching for that game to call home.

no grimboj, just felt my character was too cool to dance around like a tit for 72hours...

After playing eve for over a year no MMORPG will knock you over.. there's some true dispear out there in 0.0

Did you experience this in the trial? Because if theres pvp action early on I wouldn't mind trying it.

What are the veterans MMO players doing these days???

Waiting for Darkfall beta, hopefully later this year =)

Only true mmorpg coming out - based on the sandbox model like UO, give the players the tools, and they create content as opposed to WOW's linear singleplayer kinda bullshit approach.

DF is the only upcoming mmorpg with FFA pvp, and where player skill means more than mindless pve grinding. 10k + online per server. Control ressources/land, fight your enemies by foot, mounted, by sea. Kill them and loot every single item off their body...

Yeah mmorpgs that require you to pve 20-30 hours per week so that you can compete in exciting world pvp for 30 mins (if you are lucky to find anyone not in instances) sucks... example = wow.

Basicly mmorpgs with instances suck, and I wouldnt call them mmorpgs.

Other mmorpgs require time in other ways, like EVE is basicly a good game but requires you to mine for ages to be able to compete in pvp. I don't quite like that aspect either. It's better than Wow for sure, but still a game with a huge repetitive timesink necessary in order to compete, is bad.

Darkfall in concept should be different, since players skill and not your equipment determines the outcome of pvp. Of course being able to play alot and make money for better equipment will give you an edge, but nothing more.

Right now I'm playing Guild Wars, and loving every minute of it. I'd like to say, by the way, that I'm not a Guild Wars fanboy, I've only been playing the game for about a week, and this is my second approach. I bought the game upon release, and totally hated it, played for a couple of weeks and dropped it, thinking I'd never look back.

After that, I played WoW for a long time, I played WoW until just looking at the log in screen made me bored. So I'm sitting infront of my computer one day, wondering what the hell to do with myself. Warhammer Online, the only other game I have any interest in, isn't coming out for a long time. Everything else looks like total crap, and I'm feeling rather hopeless. After a few days, I start going into MMORPG withdrawls (yes, I'm an addict) and load up Guild Wars out of pure desperation.

To my great surprise, I'm having a hell of alot of fun with it. After the constant grinding/farming of WoW, Guild Wars for me is a breath of fresh air. I love the combat system, I love putting together skill combos. I'm currently playing a Necromancer/Mesmer, and everyday I think to myself "Geez, this is what Warlocks in WoW should have been". I love the pvp, I love the light hearted feel of the pve, I love the storyline. I love the fact that you can observe other guilds duke it out, it teaches you alot, and the conversations in the observes channel are very interesting and educational. My guildmates are also very helpful and informative, they're making my aclimation a pleasant experience.

Will my love affair with Guild Wars last? I don't honestly know. All I know is that right now, I'm having more fun than I've had with an online game for a very long time. So, if you're burnt out from hardcore pve grinding, I suggest giving Guild Wars a second look. Who knows, it might turn out to be the right fit.

I've played all those and more. If you are concerned about community, obviously stay away from the games that are more than 3 years old. There are two games I think are worth mentioning and one isn't on your list.

EQ2- I bought and played this one for a couple weeks before quitting out of aggravation. I got aggravated because my computer couldn't handle the graphics, unless they were almost the lowest settings. This game is a lot like WoW with different scenery and better made quests. I'd buy this one if I were you or...

Saga of Ryzom- Play the unlimited free trial. You only get to play on the island, but the island will get you to level 60ish and will take a while. You can play the trial as long as you want. This is a skill based MMO that focuses more on RP and Crafting. Fighters do have a place in this game. I would try this if I was not certain about EQ2.

Oh...one more thing. I would look into DAoC maybe, because it is still alive and kicking, has had a graphics rehaul and look fairly nice now. Only thing I suggest is playing on a classic server, which is their newest server and to have all the expansions, which you can buy the Epic Edition for around $29.

You can PvP starting at lvl 1, but most wait till lvl 5 to start PvPing in the Battlegrounds. After level 10 they wait till 20 to PvP again and then after 24 they wait till 35 to PvP again. Lastly once they are in their upper 40's is when they go into the End game PvP.

Sadly you are mistaken. The Chronicle is another FFA PvP, full loot and etc MMO coming out supposedly sooner than DF Online. DF is not like UO either, because DF is some what faction based. The Chronicle has no factions whatsoever.

I bought GW aswell at release, played it for a week and then returned it to Wal-Mart. Now I am wishing I didn't do that. Maybe I will buy it again and Factions someday.

    No I am not mistaken.

TC will have terrible gfx (look at the screen shots, just my opinion of course).
    It will have instances.
It will have restricted pvp zones.
It has names over players heads (promotes zerging).

Other that that the info available about TC is so sparse there is not much to say about it. Sounds like it might still be good if you can live with the weird gfx.

    Battlefield 2!

Honestly, MMO's are really very dry right now IMHO. I'm spending most of my game time playing PC games like BF2, Steel Beast, Spellforce 2, oblivion and a few others. I'm resisting playing around with NWN because NWN2 is just around the corner. Nice thing about PC games is you don't need to spend hours doing the same thing over and over. You can play for an hour or so and have some fun. Big plus I've noticed lately.

Not really to interested in loading up a new MMO just to get sent out over and over to kill 10 of this and that. The game I'm really looking forward to is Hero's Journey and Aion.

Stuff like Vangard is just going to be more recycled EQ.

    Show me..........kill 10 rats!

    Show me.........40 man raid!

As a PvP player, with no good PvP games, I have resorted to two things:

I outpost PvP in AO when possible (while it is fun, it doesn't happen often)

and I play DotA (a hero vs hero game for Warcraft III)

Hopefully WAR will own my life soon, or Hero's Journey... or Chronicle of Spellborn... one of the many!!!

God, we need new MMOs ::::15::

As for PvP DarkFall and Warhammer Online look to be the next two big PvP oriented games. DF more so as WAR will have safe-areas, but from the looks of it in WAR if you don't want you'll never have to do PvE as you gain xp (or however they're doing it) from PvP also.

I like the idea of decorating my armor with the severed heads of dwarves personally

EVE is over 3 years old now and I'd say its community has never been stronger.... in fact its community is probably stronger than any mmo out there as its a single shard server.

I'm sorry but you don't HAVE to mine at all if you don't want to. I haven't mined with my character for 2 years and I make more than enough to support myself and my corp in the game. It's not necessary to do ANYTHING in EVE that you don't want to but you do need isk to buy skills/ships/etc. How you make that isk however, is up to you.

From what I've gathered the type of MMO you seek is currently not available.

Roma Victor is out and has lots of promises that remain unfilled. I truly think that if they can get it to what they promised that this game will catch on.

I am looking forward to hearing more about Heroes Journey. They already have a great team working on and marketing for this game. It is still about a year off though. Considering they already have a PR group updating the masses on content and the like it just roves that they are taking it very seriously.

Or if you could wait about 3 years, my company iwill be coming out with a brilliant little game that will take the world by storm.

No it has no name yet, yes it has perma death and full loot. Crafting is a major part of the game and the fighting is working out to be very realistic.

    Granted I am hugely Biased.

More to come in the next few months
