Single player mmorpg like game

I just been thinking for a while. I'd love a nice game which was designed kinda like an MMORPG in that it had monthly content updates and was fairly open-ended storywise. Be especially good if it had a some nice base building aspects and rather a world with a bunch of npc interactions. :)

I don't really like Morrowind all that much., I played it for a while though. And why FFXI? I want a solo game here.. I heard it involved alot of forced grouping? I'd rather never group at all if I had my way of it.

I know they are not out yet, but for soloing...

WoW might be good. Warhammer & Realms of Torment have system that prefer soloing over grouping in the long run from what I see.  Maybe duo would be better, but duo is close to soloing, finding 1 person is not that hard and althought it involve a start of a group, they will never request more then a duo there.

I dont recommend, really not recommend, a game like EQ for soloing, althought with a beastlord or a necro (mage and druid as well, althought they would be my second choice) it can be done.

Morrowind was great but single play home.  There are some old Muds that are nice for soloing if you can bear the texts game with no graphic(maybe some askii hehe). :)

Well if that ain't a oxymoron....

Anyway to answer your question although dated UO is as close as you're gonna get for that type of experience. Now that I think about it, if you can tolerate it SWG is by far the prettiest mmorpg with no need to group what so ever. I mastered scout/ranger and earned close to 700k just from playing alone. But the high-end content was sorely lacking. Good luck in your search and if you find a SPORPG(single-player online rpg) remember to share the wealth....

Morrowind is what came to my minbd as well when I read the first post.  Daggerfall was the original.  I remember running around in Daggerfall and saying to my brother sitting next to me: "Man, what if all of these other characters were played by real people.  That would be awesome."  I should have patented the idea on the spot.  I would be rich today.

As for soloing, I am a solo'er at heart as well.  I solo'd a Mage from 1st to 40th in EQ before quitting.  Mage's could solo very easy.  I solo'd a Wizzie in DAoC as well.  I usualy search out a good character for soloing and make it my main character.  I even started off solo'ing in ShadowBane until I figured out how ridiculously easy leveling was when grouped.  Everybody gets almost max XP for a kill, no matter how many people are in the group.  Crazy XP, crazy fast in that game.  I took many characters from 1st to 20th level in 3 hours.

Yes, for Morrowind it´s possible to download new player-made quests and content when ever you want to. This is one of the most immersive games out there, even though I sometimes think there is a bit too much reading.

Horizons, allthough a online game, (I am not sure what you are looking for exists in the SP world), I am now lvl 43 Crafter and 30 Adventurer and I have teamed 5 hours tops.

Lots and LOTS of NPC's and quests, an awesome crafting system and absolutly no need to interact with other humans if you dont like.

If you are hellbent on it being a free game im not sure that much exists for your needs, but I suppose Neverwinter nights would work to, there are many many servers out there and people make quests and adventures a lot, these you can download and play offline to.

Single Player MMORPG? Get .Hack for the Ps2. It actually IS an offline MMORPG. It has a great story and decent graphics. The only downfall I see is that battles get kinda repeative... but overall its a good game. I enjoyed all 4 ^_^

Yes there are four... and they all continue one after the other... with each getting alot more difficult!

I might try out Horizons if they ever put a free trial out.. I played it in beta and didn't like it all that much really.

Hmm well any MMORPG that allows solo gaming you can play single player style. There ar not too many I know. Asheron Call and Horzion are soloable and future games like UXO, WOW and Mythica have also promsied this feature.

Or maybe i am misunderstanding and you mean offline? In that case Neverwinter nights is closed you get I suppose atm for an single player game with frewuent updates. Player made content can be nice but in my exp. lack the red thread or better said the consistinecy over time.

hope that helped a little have fun
