Its getting cleche to flame these so I'll give a propper answer :P

If you havent played guild wars then thats a good game to start out with. It *wont* last forever but if you pick up the original for $20 it should last you atleast a month or two and its a free subscription with lots of pvp opportunities so you can keep coming back to it every so often as most people do.

quick review: Eve is crap for pvp - people run from you or you run from them - no straight up pvp. EQ1 is almost unplayable graphics and hard to get into after a game like wow, eq2 is alright but very little pvp opportunities. SWG has a lot of pvp but the servers are constantly getting more and more like a ghost town and the pvp is reduced to duelling or going overt in front of star ports. COH/COV has pvp servers but levelling on that game is a write off, same problem really no one plays it to party with. DDO has no pvp and the community doesnt want it so dont expect an influx of it soon.
I dont have a lot of experience with auto assault - I dont like the pseudo mmofps and solo questing/grinding in it - more like a glorified one player game thats not very fun but it does seem pvp orientated in the videos. Anarchy Online would be my recommendation (after guild wars) - Its free til march 2k7, has RvR and large pvp zones and you can level as fast or as slow as you want to.

I have to agree with this. Youre gonna get the standard "But itz n0t a mmo n006" responses when somebody mentions Guild Wars, but since you ( the OP) like PvP id give Guild Wars a shot.

If you have not looked into EQ II, it might be a good idea. It was not my cup of tea, even after all the changes, but it clearly has its loyal following.

Not an option in your poll but I would suggest Guild Wars. It has the best group pvp on the market right now imo

Because GW is too far away from normal MMO paradigms and actually takes some time and research to realize just how good some aspects of it are.  It takes some time to realize just how powerful and versatile their skill system is and how good their counter system is.

For example alot of EQ/WoW people simply can't deal with the fact GW does not have the silly and unrealistic  aggro/taunt mechanics of thsoe games.  If they try to play a monk and a mob does what it should if its not stupid, try to kill them, they get frustrated and say the game is stupid.  Its funny, GW makes an active effort to make mobs act as much like humans as possible and yet people get pissed that the mobs aren't stupid.

In PvP if you do an AoE most smart people try to get out of the way do they take minimal damage.  Anet changed mobs to also display this behavior.  What happens?  People complain that they can't farm like they can in other games,  They don't say "Hey wow this game actually has mobs that aren't so stupid" instead they say "Hey why don't your mobs act dumb like all other MMOs.  You guys suck because I'm not as uber as I think I should be since that is the way I was in WoW."  I mean I have actually seen peopel say its dumb that mobs don't just stand there and die.

I wouldn't call AA a pseudo FPS.  There is aiming and ranges but your tacArc locks onto whatever you target.  You can choose not to lock a target if you like but you really never have to "aim" if you don't like.  And whether or not you hit is an RPG calculation as long as you are in range.  You just need to time your firing and driving so that you are in range.  If you have gun with a 3 or 4 target spray you might want to manually aim.  There is not first person view in AA either.  The gameplay is different but I can't say it is FPS-like although it is fast paced.  I guess since you control the firing of guns it is in that sense.  There is not auto-attach in AA so in that sense it is FPS like, but for me the reticle aiming is really the defining part of an FPS and AA does not have that at all.

I think I am just getting really sick of the run up to mob and stand there while I whack at it and do some sequence of skills thing.  I tried the trial for Ryzom last week and I was just so sick of the model I couldn't get into it.  I like the AA model at least there is a lot of movement and its significant to some degree, you still have the same skill sequence thing, but at least its less boring because you are driving and staying in range and ramming.  After playing AA and Eve for a while the thought of autoattack based games is just so tiresome.

You are right about the solo questing/grinding though.  You only really need to group for a few bosses.  Grouping can be real important in PvP.  I dunno I like that I can easily tool around solo but NetDevil needs to add a couple other options to switch it up some.

Heh very little.  When I was playing on Nagafen in Feb and march it was a frigging slaughterhouse.   Put WoW to shame.  Running around Stormhold with some 5+ con necro around the corner was certainly exciting.
