Is FFXI PC friendly?

nomadiannomadian Member Posts: 3,490
I prefer to use the conventional method of keys and that and don't really want to use a controller. So is it PC friendly, or is it just like made for Console and PC is kind an afterthought?

Origionally FFXI came out on Ps2 First, But the PC controlls are just fine. You'll use about everything on the keyboard (There are lots of shortcuts, really quite nice). Number Pad is for controlls, the "-" opens menu, you move camera with Arrow keys, Macro's CTRL+1-0 & Alt+1-0, F keys 1-8, Tab & 0(one on number pad) Toggles through Mobs, people, all objects basically. Esc backs out of menu's, And then theres the convience of being able to type without swaping.

the pc control setup is horrible. Most people who play FFXI on the PC will tell you to setup and use a gamepad and use the keyboard only for chat.

This isn't a game that you just pick up and go with man...
When you first start whether you are using a Gamepad, Ps2 Controller, Xbox Controller, or a keyboard you will have troubles with the controls untill you get used to it all.

Once you have mastered one, you will use it forever cause you won't want to try something else when you know everything on one.

I think using a controller on the PC for this game is terrible, personally.  The keyboard works so well and everything is mapped to a shortcut key press.  I use the "compact" setting even on a full keyboard.  This way, you can map movement to WASD or whatever you would normally use, and then the arrow keys can be used to control the camera, so you're using both hands this way.  You also have use of the numpad if you end up liking that control scheme.  You have more options to customize in the compact setting although the name of the setting itself sounds constricting.  Macros get mapped to a CTRL-#, and everything else, like attack, inventory, weapon skills (etc.) get mapped to a corresponding CTRL-A, CTRL-I, CTRL-W, respectively.  Everything has a shortcut, so you won't be dealing with the menus like the controller people will be, so you'll have faster reflexes and better timing overall, which can be very important in the game.  Plus, having to drop the controller to chat is annoying to me.  I'd much rather already have my fingers planted on the keyboard and hit the spacebar when I want to start chatting and type away with no shuffling around.

I bought the game for PC (mainly because I didn't want to buy the HDD etc. for the PS2... way to expensive and my PC is more powerful anyway). The keyboard layout is fine, I've always used the full layout, might mess around with the compact abit after what was said above, but the controls are ALOT easier than with the PS2. I helped a friend set up FFXI for her PS2 a good year ago.. and it was hell. I'm sure part of it was because I was already use to the PC layout, but I hated it.

So to answer your question, to me FFXI is very PC friendly.

For me at first, it was very very frustratiing to get used to. but my friends started coming over and helping me out, and after a while, im so used to it. i got on a friends version of wow, and started screwing things up. Now im just used to num pad, i personally like reg. compared to compact.

Actually, the game came out on PC first. At the time the game launched, the PS2 hard drive was not out yet. The reason why the controls resemble console games is because it was designed to be portable, hence why we have a PC version, PS2 version, and Xbox 360 version that all plays pretty much the same way.

Actually Mr. Know-It-All, it came out on PS2 first in Japan, then on PC in Japan, then PC in North America, then PS2 in North America.

Meh, I have a bad habit of replying to posts before reading the rest of the thread. We don't need another post about the Japanese PS2 version.

If I could've deleted the post, I would've. All I could do was edit it.

this quote is very not true at least from my experience. Almost my entire LS plays on pc and use the keyboard as do I and it works fine. You just have to know how to make the macros which is fairly simple. Oh and don't try to play with the mouse.
