EVE for the Non-Voice IP Player

Hello.

Would you recommend this game to someone who uses text chat only?

Are there major portions of the game that are inaccessable to someone who uses text chat only?

Not at all. Some corps/alliances insist on its use during fleet operations but there are some that dont. I played since beta and only used voice for the first time recently.

You can do many things in game without using any of the voice chat programs and it is possible to get by never using it. The times it really helps is when you are ganged (grouped) with others and there is a chance of combat. Because quick and coordinated responses give a huge advantage voice communication with your gang members is very important. It doesn't matter if you don't have a mic, even if you can just hear what is said the benefit is great. Like any form of communication you also need to know something of how to use it beforehand and not be downloading the voice chat client moments before you'll be fighting.

What games are there that do require Voice Comms? It's just a third party program that allows you to talk to your friends. It does help while gaming, especially in combat, but the lack of a Voice Comm isn't going to make any part of any game inaccessable.

Personally i'm on Ventrilo 24/7 with friends... it's cheaper than a phone.

All major alliances require you to have either ventrillo or team speak during combat operation and since defending your own space is mandatory, if you don't use it, you will eventually get kicked of said alliance. That being said, this is usually only enforced during large-scale ops as when it is only 30-50 people flying, having 4-5 people not on voice comms isn't the worst thing in the world.

On the other hand, getting a voice comm program dosen't mean you have to get a mic and are forced to talk. It is mostly used for ushering orders by a gang leader so, listening is key.

Group PvP requires voice coms to be successful. Most decent fleet commanders will have a standing shoot-on-sight order for anyone who shows at a combat op without being on voice.

Unless you're actually leading, you wont need a mic. Just get a cheap pair of headphones and you'll be fine.

Correct, most pvp groups don't requier you to talk on TS just listen (unless you are the FC or scout). Personaly I very much prefer to do all non time critical talk thru text but when it comes to acctual combat text just doesn't cut it.

As the other players have stated, voice comms is really only needed when engaged in say Fleet battles etc and then you only listen. I use Vent and Teamspeak constantly and have for many years, since roughly 1998 when I was using Roger Wilco in other games.

It wasn't used seriously as most of the time, as we still do is make fun of one another while mining etc. When it comes down to it, if I didn't have voice I probably wouldn't play most games as I like to be able to work on a strategy say in a first person shooter or even when we run a Complex in EVE. In game chat text can be used quite effectively but this takes time and requires you to move your "combat fingers".

    Voice FTW
