is there an eta on issue 8?

damian7damian7 Member Posts: 4,449
i honestly can't remember when issue 7 came out.  i remember 6 started on halloween and i want to say i remember thinking "damn, 7 months and nada still"; so that'd have put us around aprilish.  but i'm too stupid to remember when it actually came out.

seems like i8 should be out in the next month or so, IF they're back to the 3month/issue rate.

if not, then yayayay fanbois were wrong, yet again... and one day i'll learn to ignore everything they say completely.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Issue 7 came out on 6/6/6.  Ha ha, ho ho, they so funny!  I get it, it was mostly about City of Villains, and 666 is the number of the beast.  Clever trousers.

If they have half a brain, they'll get Issue 8 out by early September and Issue 9 out by mid December.  Who cares if they're a fifth the size of current Issues?  They need to save some face and generate some interest in their games.

    City of Heroes Positron interview

During E3 we had the chance to talk to the new lead developer of City of Heroes, Matt Miller. Where will he take the game?

Matt Miller is known to the City of Heroes/Villains community as Positron. He’s been involved with the development of the games since the very beginning and is respected for his determination to communicate directly and regularly via the official forums. However, he recently moved a step up the career ladder and assumed the position as lead developer of the CoX games at Cryptic Studios, while Jack Emmert, the creative director, took a step back from the daily business.

Thus we wanted to know where Matt Miller will take the game and met with him during the E3 expo.

Boomtown: What will change now that you are the lead developer?
Matt Miller: Well, CoH and CoV are still Jack [Emmert’s] games, but he has entrusted me to lead the games’ direction. I’ve always wanted to make them more story driven and have worked for a long period to achieve that. While he still has his say, I now decide which systems and features we work on, how we implement them, which zones we create or rework and so on.

Will you be able to continue your close relationship with the community?
Yes, I hope to continue posting on the forums as much as I have done in the past. I've never felt comfortable about being the bringer of bad news, though.

Then the announcement of ED (enhancement diversification) must have been really difficult for you?
Yes, but ED was honestly something we worked on for six months and was necessary to bring players within the planned levels of power in the game. However, what hasn’t been explained clearly enough is that ED allows us to create more room on the top – with ED in place we can give our players the fat loot and make them stronger than they are now. Before we changed the way enhancements worked, we simply couldn’t do that.

What do you mean by “fat loot”?
In the next update, Issue 8, we will have a new system that gives us the ability to make your level 50 characters better. That means we’ve abandoned the idea of raising the level cap to 60 for now and instead will give you the option to make your level 50s better, then better again and then even better. That process will last a lot longer than additional 10 levels, which just create a new problem: What to do after hitting level 60?

Why are you raising the difficulty of archvillains and monsters?
Well, monsters were supposed to get an entire zone buzzing. Instead they are currently treated like secrets. If a group spots a monster, they take it down themselves before someone else notices it. Archvillains were not enough of a challenge, but we are still looking very closely at them on our test server to make sure they don’t get too tough.

What happened to the archenemy system, you mentioned some time ago?
It’s sadly on the backburner for now and we’ll not see it in the next 12 to 18 months. I really want it, but it’s a very difficult system to implement, though not impossible.

What about the switching of sides (also know as “going rogue”)?
Unfortunately right now it’s a “no” although a lot of the necessary technology has been added to the games such as badges with both heroes and villain names. It’s very complex, though, and switching sides will discourage people from creating alts to see all the content.

Are you happy with the way tanks work now?
Yeah, they are doing they job, which is to take a lot of damage. It was always the intention that they were slow to advance. It’s always a question of risk and reward. Before the changes implemented last year there was little or no chance at all of being defeated when playing a tank in a regular mission.

Will we get more items for base building to support people hanging out with eachother?
Our primary goal with bases was to create a raiding environment, which we achieved. The social factor came much later, but we’re still committed to creating more base items. The veteran player reward system will for example include special base items such as comic cover (from the City of Heroes comic, -ed) posters that you can put up in the bases or Statesman’s helmet on a pedestal. Those kinds of items are really going to put flavour in your base.

Please tell us more about the veteran player reward system
We’ll have veteran rewards, which you’ll get every three months of payment and I’d like to stress here that the three months don’t have to be continuous. There’ll be lots of fan requested items and I can tell you that a trench coats costume option will be the first reward that we’ll hand out. The rewards are account based, thus players won’t have to decide which character they want to use them on. Some of the other ideas we’re toying with are base items, free respecs and temporal powers. There’s even a chance we’ll see the beloved Christmas jet pack again. An expanded version of the Halloween event will also open this year giving newer players are chance of getting those cool badges.

    What about player apartments?
We’re still looking at that, but it will require lots of art work, since our current bases are spacious, so apartments require us reducing items so they fit on a smaller scale. But that work has no gameplay value, and to be honest I’d prefer using the time on making the game better.

Will we have to wait another six months before we see Issue 8 being released?
No, I expect a release 3-4 months after Issue 7, which means around September. Issue 8 is well on track and there won’t be any big technological speed bumps this time.

Speaking of speed bumps, why was Issue 7 delayed?
We had lots of technical problems. It was a nightmare getting Recluse’s Victory and the Mayhem Missions bug free. We also lost a writer in the middle of the process and we had to get the AGEIA PhysX working. However, both Recluse’s Victory and the Mayhem Missions ended up being way better than I had thought they’d be. The designer of the Mayhem Missions actually took time of his own to make them cooler, which resulted in a few cool bugs, too (laughs). That being said, I expect Issue 7 to hit the servers before the end of May.

What will the planned retail expansion next year introduce?
The expansion will let heroes and villains team up against a common foe.
It can be run from any of the games and there will be no extra subscription fee. It’s also build into the system of making better level 50 characters, however there is going to be content for all level ranges. There will also be a new power set for each of the existing archetypes including tanks and scrappers.

Can you tell us anything about Issue 9?
Issue 9 will include a rebuild of a couple of City of Heroes zones of which one is getting a major face lift. I can give you a hint though – it’s the one “we never play” (Faultline, -ed). We’ll also open a City of Heroes zone for villains.

Do you have any plans about creating a new epic archetype?
There’s an epic archetype planned for the retail expansion, but until then we are looking at introducing Warshades to City of Villains. You’ll not get access to the new epic AT just by hitting level 50 this time. Instead we’ll send you on a special Strike Force or trial.

What is the status of the option of transferring characters between servers?
That’s a thing we plan for Issue 8 or around that time. There will be a charge for the service, though – some kind of micro transaction. I don’t know the details but it’s because such a transfer is very taxing on the database servers, there’s certainly much more to a server transfer than you’d think.

only a fanboi would take offense at a statement like that.  if fanbois had ever been right about anything that they've ranted about; well...   but that never happens, the blind obedience to deity kind of throws them.

    Winners come and go,
    but legends are forever.

No, I took offense because you were harrassing those who are different than you. Then again, I don't expect you to change what you think, so I won't take offense at it from now on.

Jack got demoted. Plain and simple.

Where'd you hear that?  Jack's Cryptic's 'Creative Director', and Matt's CoH/CoV's lead designer.  So from the genreal explanation I've seen of the issue, Matt has general controll over CoH/CoV, but still answeres to Jack.  This really never made all that much sense to me untill I saw the recent info about how Cryptic's expanding and is starting work on new projects for the PC and for the next gen systems (so at least one MMO, with the possibility of more than that).  So from that I take it that Jack's in carge of all of those as the Creative Director, with the Lead Designers under him working more specifically on each project.

So in summation, Jack's been promoted

What do you mean by “fat loot”?

which just create a new problem: What to do after hitting level 60?

Christ, just add contents. CONTENTS!!! Where is the beef??? They still don't know what the hell their player base wants.

Um.  That whole paragraph there is about how they're adding content supposedly.  Instead of adding it in as more levels, they're adding it in as ways to enhance your character (likely through raids, story arcs, some form of crafting (invention system I think they're calling it).  The theory being that by going that route they'll keep it repeatable and have easier ways to add more of said content without going in and having to design a whole 10 levels beyond even 60.

It still remains to be seen as to how well their idea is going to work.  I'm sure you don't think it's going to work at all of course.  However I'll wait untill I see it in action myself.  I'm a bit leery of the term "fat loot" though, but we'll see.  Regardless though, I don't see how this isn't content.

Also, content is the plural of content.  I generally find the contents at the begining of a book, or in a list on the side of a box.  Not trying to be too nit-picky, as I frequently butcher words myself (I'm sure you could find one or two in this post easy), just saying though.

What happened to the archenemy system, you mentioned some time ago?
It’s sadly on the backburner for now and we’ll not see it in the next 12 to 18 months. I really want it, but it’s a very difficult system to implement, though not impossible.

In other words, you won't see it ever.

Wasn't it his idea?  I forget exactly.  Hmmmm.  Oh well, you're probably right though.  It's a shame really, would have been fun.

They still don't understand their own game. They still don't understand what fun is. Fun is not a grind. Fun is feeling powerful. Fun is not work.

All true.  Personally I've never found the game grindy at all.  Now I've definately played games that were a grind, but CoH/CoV ain't them.  Heck, a lot of the games that I felt were a grind weren't truly.  It just felt like it.  Probably something similar with you and CoH/CoV.

Anyhoo.  My two cents, take it for what you will.

I have no idea how to respond to that, other than to wonder if the future of stand-alone single-player games is multiplayer teams?

do you know what harrassment means?

harrassment is when you make a post on the coh board and as a side-thought make a statement like "man, at this rate, cov will be out before universities and skills" and an army of angry lemmings swarms you telling you how stupid you are and how universities/skills will be out with the next issue (i5) and you're just a complete moron to think that they won't be out before cov is released.

that is one, of many examples, of what harrassment by fanbois constitutes.

but whatever, you seem to know everything from your short posts there bub.  more power to ya, and those like ya!

It is kind of annoying when people come in and spam a topic about how much they hate the certain game. It is bad in most of the forums, and it is absolutly terrible in SWG (I understand why, but let it die already)

That being said alot of the arguments brought up against CoX were personal opinions that have no basis in fact. Mabey you don't enjoy this game, but others do. Mabey we don't like equipment, but rather making our superheros. Wether that be giving them super-speed or fly, changing the costumes or whatever, alot of people put alot of work into their toons to make them fit.

Alot of the ideas that they said in the interview got me excited. I am looking forward to the updates and think the game is only getting better.

  • tutetute Member UncommonPosts: 299

Was your post fact or opinion?  Or do any of us get a say in that when shouting from the bottom of your pedestal?

  • treysmoothtreysmooth Member UncommonPosts: 648

I agree, if you don't like the game I can completely understand.  This game is a acquired taste, but let those of us who do enjoy this type of game read the news on new things and not have to deal with your personal rants that honestly don't fit the thread, its like you want everyone to think the way you do by forcing your opinions down their throats with repeated bashing of the game.

I personally find the game to be alot of fun and to say that the future of MMO's is single player misisons is really kinda... well stupid(my opinion).  There is much of the content that can be soloed and occasionally I do with a blaster no less so don't tell me you can't, but its a MMO I can't think of a single MMO that you can quickly grind to the top by soloing, if i"m missin something feel free to fill me in.

Now on content I enjoy the new content Recluses victory is a blast to play and from the sounds of it, the new expansion is gonna add a ton of new content even for our lvl 50's which is great.

From the sounds of your post it seems COH/COV just may not be your cup of tea but then why are you in the COH forums tearing down a simple post from the devs on future content unless you just want everyone to agree with your slanted view.

    Just my take

    Peace

Fat loot. This is so stupid. You will again run into balance issues. They do not know their own game and they still don't.

Not going to happen. Not with the bugs that are still in I7. A loot base system in this game will be more complicated then they think it  is.  COX is a character skill base system ONLY. WoW is an item base system with character skills supporting it. They going to make it like WoW and it won't work.

Speaking of speed bumps, why was Issue 7 delayed?
We had lots of technical problems. It was a nightmare getting Recluse’s Victory and the Mayhem Missions bug free. It never been played because it was poorly design by crappy map makers. Lots of zones are like that. Those zone are hopeless. Make new contents instead of fix old mistake.

There’s an epic archetype planned for the retail expansion, but until then we are looking at introducing Warshades to City of Villains. You’ll not get access to the new epic AT just by hitting level 50 this time. Instead we’ll send you on a special Strike Force or trial.

Another 5 hours of stupid grind and force grouping.

Why don't you just merge the servers instead of ripping people off.

Wow so who pissed in your corn flakes!
DOAC is still the MMO I judge other games by, My first and still my favorite.
