Well I have not seen this, so thank you for posting it! Very good interview, and he does a good job of not overly bashing his former employer. All in all he was very professional while still being honest.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside

    Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

Well i did like the "I almost feel like im dousing myself with gasoline and setting myself on fire" remark

Yes he was really proffessional, but iI could never believe he was the one behind the changes, this clears it up.

Its too bad SOE and Lucas Arts considers "A Thoery of Fun" to be too much reading for its current Game Implementers.

Yup.. his actualy contract expired in June 2006 according to the artical in the OP.

This links talks about his departure...

I would also guess that since he was under contract until June 06 is why we are jsut now hearng his thoughts on the NGE and SOE.

Having access to a billion $ IP - Billions of dollars..
Having access to a massive fan base of said IP - Even more Billons...
Singly handedly alienating them due to stupidity - Priceless.

And that tells me that the above story is actually toned down and rather mild, i think the reason why he left says enough about what he thinks of SOE practices on HIS brainchild SWG

A while back, you could have pulled together the original core fanbase by just delivering piles of content, cutting back the incredibly high buffs, making sure every professions worked, and tuning up combat to be tighter and faster paced... but changes since those days have closed that path. At this point, it's a different game, with different sorts of expectations.  - Raph Koster

That sums up everything I have said since before the first CU... except for the game is f-ed up now part.

I havnt complained about this so far but I will now. What was wrong with the pre-cu speed of combat? The only thing I can think of was the speed of the attacks needed to be adjusted for Rifles and Pikeman/Swordsman. The actual animations were fine. Sure at the lower levels attacking can take ages, but to me thats a little realistic and thats how it should be. When you are new at something and wanted to be good, wouldnt you take your time and practice? Thats how I always saw the lower level trees when you have shitty speed mods, practice.

That was a great read, almost felt like he was making a confesion that was eating away at him.
I did see that latter on in the article the brief metion of future world simulations such as wow will be very hard for developers to make and come up with. I guess those of us that have been watching the next releases already figured that much out. The sandbox game days may not be in our near future, due to  costs of the projects.
I wonder if he realizes due to what soe did, how many folks that could have been drawn to the mmorpg market have left the market , and are not as easily persuaded by "it will be addressed sometime in the near future" as far as bugs and or content?

I read that as the old issue of having to give the mob 100000000000 ham to make it tough instead of making it realistic and making the resists/ham work right. Making all the attacks work right, etc.

    MY read though.

I never had any issues with the 200k hambars, maybe they should have lowered the Buffs, that way u will make it harder, The main thing is that the combat was way friendlier for the comunity, u could chat during combat, and now thats impossible, also the combat and the ham bars made way more sense, yes maybe it was a tiny bit complicated, but what we have now I totaly have no clue how (if it) works.

Its way more fague now, atleast Pre-cu was clear and obvious.
