The luxuries of PvP

Good day to all. Here's a common question one could come up with:

Why does PvP gain so much popularity? Why PKing is so important (and vital for some) that almost every online game has to include such settings?

I'm only asking because I can't find a true reason that makes sense, other than the feel of superiority, reigning, and all-might.

i use it to break from grind and other not fun stuff thats in a mmo.  also its far more exciting than say killing random mob or making weapon identical to all others.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

people were made to compete against eachother, and its fun

    no other reason is needed

Everyone has their own reasons. I think the most prevailing opinion is that a computer AI cannot give as much as a challenge as a player can.

Or worse, what if the AI would be too dominant in the game environment.  Many people would give up or the devs would have to dumb it down so people could play it.  Remember, these games are designed for players to beat them not the other way around.

I think they could afford to make them a LITTLE smarter.  ;)

Basically, when AI in these games gets smart enough that playing against it is actually a fun challenge, then PvP will start becoming less important.  Til then, PvE will always be "The Grind" and PvP will always be the meat of the game for many (most?) people, because PvE is boring - repetitive and unchallenging.

Even if they had a great AI though...  There's something to be said about facing other real people.  A computer is always something you either beat, or don't.  It never has a "great day".  It never has a "bad day".  It's hard to muster a feeling of competition vs a bunch of circuits for many people (maybe partly because they just stand there and let you kill them - smarter AI might help there).  Playing against real people might always have merits over player vs machine.

The reason I enjoy pvp is to reign superior, and feel all-mighty.

    heh

It's just a factor that needs to be considered in an mmoRPG.  To truely sell a game as a RPG, mmo or not, you need to feel the comfort of being able to do what you want to...when you want to.  If I walk up to another character in a game and he/she says something like "ROFL Your name is dumb" or something equally idiodic, I would love the fact that I could possible just walk over to him and cut his f**king throat out, and would do it with great satisfaction as well(see first line of post).

Of course this is all just my opinion and arguing if pvp should be open, instanced, and/or confirmed will be an argument we will hear for years to come.

    Cuz when I see a noob yell "L0L Y0|_| @r3 7|-|3 $|_|CK$" I really, really want to knock them a zone over.

PvP, I feel, Is an integral part of MMO's because I am a very competive person I want to win at everything I do.  Clear a dungeon is hardly a rush even when done in the fast time possible, but scrambling around on contact trying figure out what classes you are facing, where the support is, which support needs to be dropped first, what type of cc needs to be layed on the dmg classes, and on top of that figuring out if you want to call for your group to loop, push, do a simple over extend, or fall back completely and doing all this in a matter of seconds is the rush and draw to pvp for me, this example was based on DAoC,  but many games have similar complexities with regards to PvP.

Honestly when you go to the gym or what ever it is you do in your life that is competive do you not want to win, do you not want to best the other peson/people that your are playing against, wether its bowling, basketball, racquetball or tiddlywinks it is human nature to want to win, thats why we keep score at sporting events down to the lowest level.  Its all about competition, and wanting to be better than your fellow man; shallow, maybe, but innately human, definately.

I have yet to encounter that problem.

But even if that were a practical consideration, they could easily scale it.

Because making newbs cry is the ultimate online experience. Duh.

    -----------------------------
Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I enjoy PvP for the same reason that I enjoy old school shooters like Galga and Arrow Flash. PvP tends to drop me into "the zone" and keep me there in a way that is only possible in a single player game by creating impossible situations.

It's about achieving a state of no mind where thought and action are one and the same. I could care less about my ranking or my opponents feelings. I'm not thinking about how pissed my opponents are. I'm not thinking about my ranking or any reward in loot. I'm totally absorbed in the action of acquiring the next goal in progression toward a win. I like winning, but it's the action of actually playing that drives me. Ask anyone that plays chess, Magic: The Gathering, or any organized sport well and they'll tell you the same thing. If the match is good, we don't care if it goes on forever. I compete against myself to become better than I was in an effort to achieve the perfect game. This isn't anything I really think about in game, but it is the primal reason that I play.

This can happen single player, but it requires some rather stark odds against the player. Gauntlet did this perfectly because it was almost impossible to beat on one quater. Most early arcade and compture games were insanely difficult in order to bring the player to this mental state. We can now play against other, equally skilled, players so there is no reason to make single player games that are impossible to beat anymore.

If you don't already know, you'll never understand.

PvE is boring.  Bash 50 mobs, level up, repeat.  Fighting other players is a challenge and they're always doing new things that keep you on your toes.  In this environment skill matters and people have to pay attention and really try to succeed.

Unfortunately in most MMOs it really comes down to whoever has the most uber sword / most time to grind.  Or one has to grind forever before they can enjoy PvP.  Which is one reason why I enjoy Guild Wars, because though the PvP is "meaningless", I can do it all day and not have to grind my way back up to PvP status to keep doing it.

g0at_k1ller, if YOU feel your life is to compete everything and everyone, then that's fine with me. I go to the gym to keep my fitness and health at high levels, I play beach volley to hone my dexterity and teamwork abilities and generally do whatever I do in my life to better myself, so I feel closer to what I like on me. It's part of the human thinking, to feel confident about themselves. Now, if there are others who prefer demonstrating their prowess and abilities to the people around... I won't state my opinion, it's THEIR way of living.

Sadly, PvP was incorporated mostly to bring a sense of satisfaction to the oppressed masses, a chance to beat everyone and reach the top of the ladder. If I'm wrong, then it has been this way the last years. While many (as some have posted) would enjoy a sense of competitiveness just for the fun of it, most of the online gamers act for the reason I mentioned above.

Proof? Check all those l33ts, who consider nothing but how to build-up their characters, prefer to go solo due to lack of teaming and communication, and cut you to pieces to gain whatever points they will get upon PKing.
