next generation mmos, WoW clones?

Jd1680aJd1680a Member Posts: 398

WoW have 6.5 million, that is 6,500,000, it have more people then some states.  Someone who wants to get into piece of the action will want to create something that is already successful.  Since WoW is the most successful mmo ever, gaining 50% of the market share, someone will copy WoW.

Just like the day when EQ, the few who wanted to get into mmo all copied EQ.  You then got a few EQ clones as a result.  Why did they copy EQ?  Because it had 500,000 people playing at the time, it was the most successful mmo ever and developers wanted to copy that.

How would you feel games in the next year or two will be nothing more then WoW clones?

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

There will be plenty of clones, and more than a fair share of titles that are not. This is the way it has always been...leaders set the trend and are followed, and leadership is a rare commodity.

I'm all for more and more people coming into the genre. It's inevitable, because interactive entertainment is inherently more interesting than passive entertainment. The broader the range, the more titles available with subtle nuances, the better the entire industry is.

So bring on the clones. We will always have maverick developers, indy houses, and people willing to take risks to throw titles out there that buck the trend. Everyone once in a long, blue moon someone will stumble on the winning combination that sparks a new trend.

EQ was by far not the most successful, Lineage was alot more successful =)

Anyways, I hate the EQ/WOW clones genre, Warhammer + Vanguard is looking to be the next big upcoming clones.

A massive multiplayer online roleplaying game has so many possibilities, and I simply hate game companies who create clone after clone over the same old EQ concept, substituting content with the same old braindead PVE treadmill.

Try something new for christs sake. Darkfall is an example of a company trying to advance the genre, big props to them, I hope they succeed.

btw, EQ wasn't the most successful, Lineage was, BY FAR, just not in the United States, not to take away from what you are saying, though.  I think the game that is really trying to break the mold, and I think will do so successfully, is the Chronicles of Spellborn, in terms of combat, loot, questing, armor and weapons, and several other ways.  I'm really psyched about it, can't wait for open beta!

I was excited about Tabula Rasa until they changed it into a MMOFPS with missions(played it at E3 2005:(

I guess its still different from a wow clone but it looked so much better than it is now.

Err. I believe WoW is an EQ clone. So, how you define a WoW clone again?

If you havent noticed, WoW is a clone of EQ. You cant deny that fact.

Heh didnt realize the guy above me pointed out the same fact. Anyone that denies this fact is deluded.

And all of these games are derived from DND.  DND was derived from books.  The books were ....

EQ was the most successful in the West at that time and it is inspired from muds. WoW did draw a lot of its influence from EQ but EQ is still radically quite a different game.

I was hoping for EVE clones or better yet, MMOs that have a computer cyberspace like settings(See TRON).

    I dunno about the gameplay.

As long as there is no way for someone thousands of miles away that can connect to a server and have low ping, you will be seeing more of those point and click, dice rolling combat system, and level grinding gameplay.

You know, I'd love to see a Tron-based MMOG. But not done by Disney, for the love of god. There is sooooooo much potential in that story for a MMOG.

/clap. Indeed, indeed. It's just like music, all genres of music were derived from something else, same for MMOs.

WoW is not the ultimate form of an MMORPG. As a matter of fact it's the most stereotypical and non-controversial version you could ever possible make out of a genre.

It wins with it's simplicity. I really don't think the next gen will copy WoW. Because some still has faith in creating the impossible. We already saw Dark And Light fall into pieces, now we are waiting for the next wave of MMORPG's.

    Exactly.

Some of you guys need to get in a time machine and go back to 1990 and play a few MUDs. No graphics, of course, but the core concepts that exist in MMORPGs today were all there. Even many of the terms were coined way back then: "spawn camping," "mobs (mobiles)," "buffs," etc. EQ certainly didn't invent all that stuff out of thin air.
