Content, play-style, creators, and graphics so more or less its a compleatly diff game. EQ2 just has used existing lore tossed a few years on it, and built a game diff game around it. Besides EQ1 can be played on a normal comp where EQ2 needs a top of the line one to handle the graphics.
In comparison to EQ, EverQuest 2 is sort of easymode, any class can solo to max lvl kinda like in WoW. Plus the game is drown out by tons of bland quests that feel more like work then actually something immersive to pull you into the game.
Everquest remains the very best online MMORPG available. Despite dated graphics and sound, the core gameplay is still tops, despite Sony's continued attempts at dumbing down the content.
Maybe someday in the future Sony will realize that what makes Everquest a great game is the fact that it has always been a great challenge to master.

EQ2 takes place 500 years after EQ1
Well that was the idea before now with alot of back ground an history problems their more like alternate universes .EQ2 was rushed out the door to help blunt the WoW onslaught .Instead it split the EQ player base.An acted as a gate way to WoW since it (EQ2) was buggy for a long time.Worse yet it was an still is veiwed by EQ players ( at least many of the ones i know ) as a betrayl by SOE.
Devlopment money used on EQ2 could have/should have been used on EQ.But some times its better to start over than to keep fixing whats broke ( tho their track record of fixing whats broke is not that grand). The mass migration from EQ to EQ2 never happened.Players came back to EQ well thos that didnt move on to WoW for a bit.
Some one said that EQ an EQ2 are as similar as Madden 97 an Madden 2006 .Sounds fair to me.Difrent grafics,an play mechanics but based off the same thing .. sorta.
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing." Robert E. Howard, The Tower of the Elephant (1933)
well, i tried both EQ2, as well as EQ trial, and i have to say i liked the "outdated" (if that's what you want to call it) EQ 1 better somehow. Even the graphics aren't that bad as many put them. My heart though is with other games, so somehow i couldn't get stuck to it. if i had played it a year ago or so, who knows.... EQ2 though - meh, too much like wow somehow (or wow too much like eq2, i think that one came be4). unfortunately both are $OE....
I can't wait for Vanguard. I am a retired 6 year vet of the original EQ and quit mainly due to grinding out exp and lvls and having characters match what took me 6 years to do in less than 6 months. After Brad and company left EQ, it got way over simplified imo. I long for the old EQ style gameplay, it was the best I have ever played. I will be signing up for Vanguard even if SOE get's their grubby corporate hands into it or not. If Brad help design it, it will be a very good game.
