Hello.

Would you recommend this game to someone who uses text chat only?

Are there major portions of the game that are inaccessable to someone who uses text chat only?

I haven't seen any mmorpg yet that has had any accessibility problems just because someone uses text only. All mmorpgs are text based in communication. Teamspeak is always an option but never a requirement, and most don't even support voice chat to begin with. What game have you been playing?

    I have.

Some game communities are so wedded to its use, that almost everyone who plays regularly has it.  It may be impossible to find groups or participate in large scale content if you do not consent to its use.

I'm just wondering if EQ has that sort of culture, and if they do, whether or not it is a serious barrier to getting the most out of this game.

Can you possibly name the MMORPG that you have played that needed voice to work properly. I have played pretty much every mmorpg on the gamelist (the released ones) and some of the beta ones to and iv never used voice and never needed to at all.

Everquest most definatly does not need voice at all, unless you want it.

Your not talking about the game needing it, your talking about the community wanting other people to use it, simply ignore them if you dont want it, dont get it.

Either way, iv never played an mmorpg that needed it, please tell us what mmorpg it was/is ?

    Thanks alot

    Garrik

Actually Garrick. I know i know, GuildWars is not techically an mmorpg, But I know that the 2 guilds I was in made it practically mandatory to use it and if you were not using Ventrillo you basically missed out on EVERYTHING...Just my 2 cp.

It's not a requirement of EQ, but certainly a welcome addition to take advantage of. I don't really remember guilds really using it back when I played EQ, but things have changed since then and it's become more of a mainstream addition for mmo's so I'm sure most of the top guilds EQ are using it they'd be foolish not to as it speeds things along quicker quite simply you can talk much quicker than you can type and it's much easier to do plus it frees up your hands to focus on other things like scratching that itch that's been bugging you :D or you know the game itself.

The OP was asking if the game needs it, like i said in my last post, only some members of the community want you to have it (guilds).

So yes its very true that some guilds demand it from you, but if you dont want to use it then there are plenty of other guilds to join :).

Eve possibly? Perhaps not mandatory but most of the eve community is ts or ven junkies so you'd be missing out if your didnt use either.

I hate the concept of teamspeak or any other voice operated system. It's a real world intrusion into the virtual world you are supposed to be playing in and restricted to. It just ruins immersion.

I have played EQ since 1999, and never used any voice device, not been in guild that used it, even though a few of them have considered using some sort of voice communication.

So it is definatly not required to play EQ.
