A few ideas.

After going through developement with a few mmorpgs, I have built up WAY WAY to many ideas to share at one sitting, but here are a few that are simple, and would make HJ that much better.

-Mounts-

It seems like every mmorpg has mounts completely wrong.  It's not even remotely "cool" or real to see them just appear out of no where and then just as suddenly dissappear again.  For once, it would be nice to see a warrior walking along beside of his horse down a street or near a stable.  All the additional poly's from the mounts could get annoying in big cities, so why not give the player a option to just tie them to a post outside the walls or in a stable?  On another note, mounts should not be just for high levels who are tired of long walks.  Allow for moderately low levels to obtain something simple like a horse.  That way, the more the player uses his horse, it eventually becomes faster.  It could increase to a certain point, at which the palyer would need to buy a better mount to go even faster.

-Weapons-

Since I went alittle over board on the mounts, I will keep this one short and sweet.  Not all weapons can be left at just offensive or defensive.  You need to consider weapons like Swordbreakers; they can be used to defend and attack.  Be sure to think each weapons stats through.

-Currency-

Don't make it so players have to be super high level to make even the remotest ammount of money.  Give players other options to gain money other than killing rats for twenty eight years.  How about gambling or carnivals ?

-Abilities that affect Enviroment-

For example, if you have a fire spell that sets a certain area on fire, temporarly remove the grass/bushses from that area with a fire effect.  Or even if you have spells/mounts/items that increase speed, make it so leaves (Best sample I could think of.) follow behind them for a short distance.  It's just another simple leg up that you could add.

-Interactive Emotes-

Give the community a real in-game face and by that I mean allow for tons of emotions.  If a player has another player targeted and he types in "/punch" ...then show him punching, along with the corrisponding player reacting.  This could lead to tons of other unique emotes like hugging, kissing, kicking, slapping, pushing, tugging, and lots more.  Of course these wouldn't actually effect the player's hit points ect., but it would let the community feel much more alive.

-Character Customising-

To be honest, the idea I have thought up is to big to be typed just to be ignored.  So if you really are interested in how you could set your mmorpgs character customising levels beyond any other, ask me in a email or PM.

I like the idea of having a mount, and definately would want more than just horses. However I see a couple of problems, one of which you alluded to. That being polygons. First we dont know of the outside/inside parts of the cityes will be zoned. If they are not, it really wont do any good to tie them up, they'll still be creating a huge amount of lag and framerate problems. 2nd, is how are they going ot survive in hostile areas? I had my horse in Oblivion (which operated very much as you would like) get killed so many damn times I gave up on them, and just walked. Mounts that get killed constantly would be more of a money sink that anything, and not worth much.

Wyr will be the decideing factor in HJ, not so much weapons.

I could see this happening in instances, but alot of that going on at once in a non-instanced area could really affect framerates and lag.

I agree, this would be pretty cool. I have no idea how hard it would be to code. In SWG where if you targeted someone, your avatar looked at them. Made things alot more realistic feeling.

I beleive they are putting alot of time and effort into this. Including the ablilty to be a half-breed.

Here's a link to the article on character creation (regarding appearance):

MMORPG.com Article (Hero's Journey Character Creation)

There was another quote given by the former project lead (Melissa Meyer) in which she mentioned the fact that clothing, armor, and other outfit designs would be regularly added to character creation (and the game itself). While Melissa isn't with the game anymore, I don't believe the game has changed direction in that regard.

The latest article on Wyr does  have me a bit concerned that the concept of "appearance being totally divorced from gameplay" is no longer what it once was, but beta hasn't even begun yet, so I'm sure there's a fair amount of wiggle room left on that topic.

im gunna go ahead and add a wacky idea...

when an account or charachter is deleted or canceled then those charachters on that account should "break" as per the lore... turn evil whathaveyou, after a certain amount of time.

sure this is discouraging to those who end suscription with the hopes of returning one day... but phooey on that idea.  maybe make it so only ONE charachter can be saved for a longer period of time or do something in game like in gemstone akin to aquiring deeds to the gods to hold your charachter longer... but not forever.

and say these people return after their charachters have gone feral... they should be given a small history as to what happened to the charachter, where he/she went... and who killed him/her... and if its still alive have a small quest generate for you to challenge the charachter for your families honor or whatever.  perhaps gain back a tainted weapon and so on.

jus thinking since the posts are so slow.

    more wackiness...

i think powerfull spells should require alot of contemplation and focus...  wouldnt it be neat in a realistic sence if the camera panned around you while you spouted your tomes and wrote your symbols in the air... this is force you to loose touch a bit with what is going on directly in the battle field much the same way when you focus very intently with you eyes closed... let me further explain:  when your playing MMo's often times your cast and observe, but youir charachter is deep in thought on the spell, but youir deep in thought about logistics and where the monsters are... unless your perception skill was really high, this doesnt make any sense or at least you could try to make it more realistic... with the camera revolving around youi, it sort of disorients you

make it very cinematic... spinning around your charachter and doing a closeup when the final words are spoken...

what!?  its not like anyone else is posting!
