Squad-based combat innovative, not immersive

True immersion in a MMORPG is when you play one character in first person POV mode.  What you see is what the character sees, when the character moves through the world it is like you moving through the world.

While this squad-based combat is certainly innovative, it smacks more of board-game play than MMORPG-gaming.  Will definitely wait a few weeks after release to see how reviews come out before I buy this one.

Well the good news is, you can play in a First-Person perspective if it so suits  your fancy.  For the life of me, however, I can't seem to draw the parallel to the whole "having minions = board-game mentality."

If you could enlighten me to your train of thought, hopefully I can address some of your concerns!

If that is the case, then every MMO out there isn't truly immersive as they offer 3rd person view as well. Squad based minions are innovative and it's one of the great appeals of this game for me. I also would like to hear out it smack of board-game and not MMO.

  • I don't like First person POV because there is no peripheral vision.  I find 3rd person more immersive because no peripheral vision bugs me so much.

I'll have to see how the game plays, but after listening to the podcast...wow, what an F-ing horrible idea. I don't want to control "minions" I want to control my avatar and play with other people. I mean, 6 minions? my god this idea is not for me at all.

I commend the Dev team for trying something different, but the reason it's different is because it's not a great idea IMO heheh. Anyways, thanks for the podcast. I now know that I won't be playing this game. Good luck!

Why can't you emmerse yourself as a general? A true general in combate wouldn't even think he's in his body but that he is the unit. Saying it's unimmersive because it's third person is just plain stupid, like you can't get into a movie because you are seeing the character from a third person veiw rather than threw the person's eyes. Or like you can't like a book because it uses 'him' instead of 'I'

Squad based mmo is innovative and unique at the moment. I hope they realy nail this concept into a solid and rich with content game. Im hoping to hear good reports once it goes into public beta.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

When I started playing EQ1 I prided myself in being able to do just the right thing at just the right time, no matter how frantic things got (or how bad my framerate lags).  Even the idea of creating a mage or necro didn't appeal to me, because I'd have yet another set of bars to watch.

However, I eventually created a mage, and ended up finding that it really wasn't any harder.  I ended up playing the mage as my main until I left the game after several years.

Now, anytime I do an MMO, I tend to lean toward the toons that offer pets, because it's more natural to me.  So remembering how I initially felt about pets, I'm really looking forward to trying out the minion concept, even though it looks like it *could* be confusing (as did the pet initially).

Ya I don't see how you can see this is not immersive I mean squad based combat is innovative and allows for a lot more interesting situations that can be done with smaller groups of people. No one has played the game yet so I can't see where this argument is coming from.

    It's really quite simple:

Control one character and it's like you are the character.

Control several characters and it's like you are some disembodied intelligence manipulating a bunch of puppets.

Compare "Dungeons and Dragons" (the table top game).  You roll one character, play one character, and sort of get into the character.  Now, look at the game "Risk"; you play a "general" controlling many armies, production of armies, movement of armies, and you really never feel like you are down there yourself on the map.  You might as well be playing chess.

Frankly, I cannot see how you cannot see this.  Maybe you don't want to.

Again, the new MMORPG's continue to hand us another round of ideas doomed to failure.  The 2000's will be known as the learning years of MMORPG design.  The 1990's were a success, despite computing limits and poor graphical quality, but the 2000's will be the decade of mistakes.

It always amazes me how people can sometimes make snap judgements based on so little information.

This is a prime example.  Here we have a game that hasn't come out yet, hasn't even produced a beta, and hasn't even given definitive rules for how it will play.  All it's done up to now is hint at the fact that it will play differently than other MMOs, in that it will allow a player to have minions that they can control.

And with that little information, Billius8, you've decided that the game already won't be immersive.  You've even decided to go a thousand steps further and proclaim the entire decade to be a failure with regards to MMOs in general!

Well, good for you!  You should probably just go weather out the remainder of this decade huddled up with your UO and EQ1 - you know, just till all the failures blow over.

The fact is - Gods and Heros has offered us *at most* sketchy information about a different play style.  Until you, I, or anyone else tries it out, any snap judgements, whether exhalting or dismissive (like yours), are simply premature, unwise, and just plain silly.

You are correct that G&H is innovative.  The only way to tell if it will be immersive will be to play it.  From all of the available information out there so far G&H looks very promising indeed.

Commanding the squad could be immersive if done right.  I would want my soldiers to have names.  Individual differences between them would help a lot. Hopefully we could customize their appearance and skills.

I wouldn't want to have to micromanage their every action, though.  If I can give them a general command and then trust them to follow orders it would be fine.  But most other mmorpgs have such a system for pets so this should be no problem.  In SWG I always fought with two or three pets.  It was very immersive.  Check my sig, immersion is why I game.

I totally disagree. My biggest problem with first person view is that there's no peripheral vision at all. Which means that someone could be standing right next to you with a shotgun pointed at your head and you won't even know it until it's too late.

I find that a 3rd person or 'over the shoulder' view with the capabilities of using the mouse wheel to zoom in to a first person view is the way to go in all games that require you to control an avatar. I very rarely play games that only support first person view because of the peripheral problem. It doesn't feel right and you have to play differently than you would if you were really in the world yourself.

I agree with Joeballs, I like the over the shoulder allot.  I do play in 1st person POV allot as well, normally while in dungeons and etc. where the camera can cause more trouble than it's worth in some games.

I agree joeballs, eventually we will have a full first person MMO but that will be when the surround sound and physics are so real you can hear/feel the people coming up behind you to your right and left, etc. I believe we have the technology to make extremely realisitic/immersive games, but it will take some time before someone truly develops one taht takes advantage of and creates the new technologies that will be needed.

I've personally been waiting for a game like this, where entire armies of 100-200+ people can march against each other, and there will be true battles that require real strategy.  Until now MMO's have been far too "every man for themselves", a true army will be something nice to see.

i only read the first sentence or so of your post and i gotta say, at least do some research before posting, you DONT control more then your avatar alone you just give commands for actions to your recruits/non-human minions and they'll try to accomplish orders, you can still fight, i mean this just gives it better role playing and stratigy, and you still dont HAVE to have a squad. just like to inform you to not get your hopes down for this game it looks really good like itll go bigtime like WoW and EQ.

o sorry bout the beggining one sentance thing the guy's post im talking to is 1st page i think
