Another upcoming BIG MMORPG

ARCHLORD (www.archlord.com)

another one from Korea. NHN, one of the biggest MMOG maker in Korea,

maybe start the close beta of their first full 3D MMORPG in March, 04.

Sounds and Graphics look really cool, but even Koreans don't know much about it

because NHN's trying to keep everything but some sneaks secret :(

What the company said is they've put about 8.5 mil US$ to develop this game, so it shouldn't be disappointing;

(translated from the site;

NHN used Criterion's RenderWare3 for 3D engine,

and music was performed by London symphony.

Seems like they DID use some money.)

The intro looks actually really great...if i could read the language on that hp i would be maybe smarter. If they put really so much money into that game, why they can't develop at least an easy hp for the rest of the world in englishimage

Got a few Korean questions for you...
    1. In the states we are media led to believe that N. Korea (NK) is a total dictatorship with a crazy leader that is starving half the population and the #1 threat to the world due to his selling nuk & biological tech to any willing to pay the money. Here the liberals fuss at President Bush for going after ben lauden & sadam instead of the NK leader, and now it seems the NK leader is threatening to continue to develop and export nuc weapons unless the US agrees to a treaty not to invade NK.
    2. That much of S Korea (SK) wants the US occupation force (? about 80k troops) to leave the country since the avg age is like 25 and only the old people remember / care about the abuses from the NK in the Korean war.
    3. Much of SK has broadband connection even in shacks hence why Lineage has like +4 million subscribers, and other mmo have near 9million leaving EQ in the US WAY behind with only about 400k subscribers. And a large part of the younger culture adores playing Lineage and other asian mmorpg in cafe type settings instead of at home on one's personal computer.
    4. There is a significate cultural difference between Korean rpg and Japaneese and even Chineese games. ?Are there rpg coming out of NK or is it only SK that is marketing so many games. If NCSoft is pulling in $135 million monthly (9M X $15) that is some serious $. From my pov it seems most all the asian rpg are diablo top down view, mouse click, instead of keyboard and F keys or shortcuts to target. And pvp is the defacto standard in asian games most of which are seriously into anime instead of western cinemagraphic realism.
    Your comments, opinions are welcome.

Right...so anyways, this game looks pretty nice. The intro is great, and the screens looked pretty good. And as stated, hope they translate it soon :)

Ya, that's an a pretty CG movie, too bad you don't play what you actually see in the CG movie. As for korean MMORPG's in general, the more and more I hear about them the less I actually want to ever play one. There seems to be too much focus on how many different panty shots they can come up with and less focus on actual content and gameplay. But I suppose if that's your thing then it's worth while to take a look at it but honestly, I doubt this or many korean MMORPG's will ever be big outside of korea.

Not really excited about it. Korean mmorpg seems to emphasize on graphics too much. Gameplay...hmm have to wait and see. I feel that most of the 8.5mil is spent on graphics stuff. Not really a bad thing to focus on graphics cause thats what the korean gaming community goes for. For me, until i tried it out and enjoy it, i have no faith in any korean-made mmorpg cause of my past dissapointment in them. imageimage

wow... long questions.. but welcome~ (sorry for my poor english writing)

1.+2.  Yes NK's under JK's(Jeong-il Kim, the man of NK) somewhat harsh dictatorship. There are serious promlems concerning violation of human rights and starving people. But I think he's definitely not crazy. Actually the political move he makes seems like the best(?) way to survive. Trying to lose less power and get more intentions and aids from international society. I'm sure he will give up developing nukes and biochemical weapons if the states assure NK smooth change into capitalistic standards.

The point is 'smooth change'. Except for few extremly conservative ppl(mostly over 50yrs old), most of ppl in SK just don't want to see any drastic change like assasinating JK or attacking NK. Yes it's somewhat coz we didn't able to see how ppl got killed by NKs several decades ago so we actually don't hate the communists in NK. But rather than that, it's more related with facing up to our own reality. I mean, crisis in NK doesn't end as a NK's matter only. Then SK will have to absorb NK in very short period of time, and the united Korea will be economically crippled FOREVER.. We'd learned alot  from the Germany's case. West Germany was one of the richest country in the world and even East Germany was richer than most of non-western nations. Now, NK is one of the poorest nation on this planet, and SK is just getting rid of the 'developing' country nametag.  If something happens soon, like within 10yrs, consequence will ruin whole nation and it'll take really long time to recover. (+ there are a few more things needs to be considered, like rising nationalism of China and possibility of Chinese military action to NK etc..)

So I think beating up NK is definately NOT the way we can solve the problem. Most of SK ppl will agree with that. Instead, we want to see NK's gradual and smooth change. Of course re-unification of NK and SK is like dream to us, personally I eager to see this before I die. But before the day's coming we need to be ready for it. And we need to give our humanitarian support out to the ppl of NK until the day comes.

This is why many Koreans don't like the NEOCONs in the states. :)  Ah, plus, US Army thing. Yes, Many young ppl want them to leave coz they think the attitude of USA's not helpful for better relationship between NK and SK. I agree a litte bit, but it's not realistic for now. If they leave there will be unbalance of power, and this can cause another serious problems. I think we need USArmy in Korea at this moment.(but needs SOFA to be cured)

3.+4.  Well, people in shacks who can't afford to buy PCs can get very cheap(about 0.85~1.00$ an hr) broadband connection in PC baangs(PC salons), then Yes. Most of ppl living in cities(pop more than 50,000) have at least one PC and broadband connections at their home, especially if they have young ppl living together. But most elder(>55~60yrs) ppl and a few ppl living in countryside aren't familiar with PCs or internet connections. Anyway nobody's using dial-up modem in this country. Broadband or nothing. (Of course there are very few ppl who live in regions ISPs can't reach and they are probably still using dial-ups.)

There used to be way more ppl played in PC Baang, but one of the recent statistics showed me now it's 50:50(% of playing at home : playing in PCB(PC Baang)). So number of PCB's decreasing little bit now.

For the online game boom, definitely yes for quantity but not sure for quality. (I feel like highly competitive educational system of SK sucks up kids' creativity and cultural diversity.) There are tons of online casual games from poker-ish games to fishing games. NHN(dev/publisher of Archlord) owns a megasite called 'hangame' which provides all these kinda simple games. The number of whole accounts in this ONE site maybe outnumber the pop of South Korea(46mil.). This means this market's pretty huge. This is why Korean studios had made about 30 MMORPGs last year. Everybody seems like trying to play something new but the problem was most of ppl here have quite identical taste so far, and this had caused chains of similar diablo-clones. (coz starcraft and diablo series had been phenomenon here and had become the very first setter of the tastes of millions Korean newbies.) Anyway I could find very few good ones among them but only several companies died because they brought their games into another emerging, and not saturated markets like China and SE Asia. And there, they had become the base of their taste.

It's changing though.. Sad thing is it's mainly money-driven..  Probably you will see less MMORPGs from Korea later on and some of them will be blockbusters in regard of production costs.  (just my opinion)

Back to the main topic. Lineage 1 had millions of ppl played it, Yes. Though I don't know the situation nowadays exactly, I heard Lin1 still has 1~1.5mil in Korea and more than 2mil in Taiwan, Japan and China. Lin2's got about 2 mil paying subscribers only in Korea for 3 months. I don't know what will be the tot number of subscribers when they start P2P in Taiwan, Japan, NA and China.

Cultural differences among CJK(China, Japan and Korea)? Definitely Yes. You'd better take cultural anthropology or history classes to get a good view on this.:) Just for RPG culture, the culture in mainland China just began so there's nothing I can really talk about. They are mainly consumers of Korean MMORPGs now. Very few Chinese makers just started to produce their own games having really similar features with Korean games have.  It is dangerous to generalize lots of ppl in a way, but many ppl say Japanese like small and cute stuff, and it seems like somewhat true. Plus Japan has long history of console rpgs and its famous Animes which have deeply influened Korean and Tiwanese ppl, This is why the East Asian's RPG culture shares many things originated from Japanese RPG culture, like small and cute graphics. Actually LVLling trdml has the origin back to some of Japanese console RPGs. But Since Koreans had broadband infra faster than other countries and our market started grow, SK ppl's tastes on RPG's gradually changed and absorbed more of our own culture and tendencies.

+ NK's not making MMORPGs. Just few ppl there have internet access.

+ East Asians more into PVP? Yes. more into social interaction influenced by more collective society VS more into exploring and travelling influenced by more individualistic society   is a well-known theory ppl's talking but I think there are some more reasons.

I'll be back after taking some exams(T.T). Thanks for reading this kinda long and crappy article. ciao~

Very nice, indeed. Not sure what to make of it, but it has all the charisma of a battle-worthy scene. I have to see what gameplay philosophy and content this game promotes before showering it with praise. I'm definitely curious.

    mmaclergy....

    A good post.

Seems like world politics is , after all, an issue that many people are concerned with even in game discussion forum. Very often when someone engage in political debate, its is very hard to make it an issue when one of the party involved in the debate is very little informed about the given issue.

I think what you tried to do here shed some light on how the viewpoint on certain political issue diverges depending on the type of information we receive from the media.

Now, as it's not that clear where the question even begins and ends. I'm just gonna say few words on this.

It's really hard to talk about N. Korea or even bring them in this discussion because that country is just too different from the rest of the world. They might just be located couple of minutes of drive from Seoul but they are light years apart from the S. Korean folks and the rest of the world.

What many people don't know is that there still are absolutely no economic, cultural exchange between N. Korea and its surrounding capitalistic nations, S.Korea, Japan, etc. Forget about MMORPGs, you don't even import/export food there, the most fundamental need to sustain life.

Now going back to game discussion, the boom of S. Korean MMOGs (Online game) in Asia just show what kind of change this country is going through and looks like China, Japan and US are joining this phenomenon. But I kind of regret that most of these games are very localized. The same goes for US brand MMORPGs.

Looks like both sides think NA and Asia is the only market for MMORPG. That's kind of lame. Where is Europe and S. America in this picture? I've played many MMORPGs, and believe me I've encountered more Europeans and spanish speaking S. American than I met Canadian/American.
