SOEs parent company continues to lack Focus....

RabiaRabia Member Posts: 622

Read and hope they are close to getting rid of SOE:

Article on Sony

I particularly like Sony's focus which has been a disaster for them:

"Sony used to be a company that had superior technology and cool design
and created products that other companies didn't have," said Akihiko
Jojima, author of "Sony's Sickness." "Sony has become merely a brand
for brand's sake.""

15 years ago when you bought Sony you knew the quality was excellent and you were getting the best product on the market.

Now when you buy Sony, it's shit.

Arrogance.  Sony has spent the last decade thinking that people will buy it because it has SONY on it, not giving a crap about quality and price, and so, here they now are.

If it hadn't been for the PS and PS/2 I wonder how long ago they'd have hit the rocks.

What is funny, I still have my Sony CD player that I bought way back when most of these posters were in diapers. Best one I ever had as far as stability and such, and it still runs today.

But I never use it now because it doesn't play MP3's.

Nothing I havnt seen and been preaching up here for months. Sony will sell SoE by the end of this year, I suspect to either EA or Bioware just for the sake of them having 5 MMO's to tinker with before they get serious with their own.

If Sony is to survive they need to keep doing the things listed in that article, improve their current electronics, focus on whats popular and selling hot, stop goofing off and tinkering around with new formats that arent compatable with the rest of the world (Blu-Ray) and stop blowing money on worthless retires.

In other words, they need to cancel the entire PS3 project and get back to basics and their roots. Sony ruled from their start till the last 1980's-early 90s. What did they come out with in the early-mid 90s...the Playstation. They spend so much money and time on the Playstation projects that it dosent make a single penny for them until 3-4 years later, when its on its last legs, then they blow more money on the next generation model. Its a steep downward spiral, and completely worthless.

QFE + I believe the PS3/Sony and SWG2/SOE combination is gonna make the general public understand this better...

But over the years, Sony grew complacent about its ability to come up with cutting-edge products and lost sight of the consumer.

"Producing a hit without listening to customers is inefficient, and we may even strike out," Chubachi said.

Chubachi must have had SOE in mind when he said this.

The scary thing about Sony selling off SOE is that the dev staff will likely go with the product.  Then they will get a grace period at the new company, unless the new company already realizes they suck.

I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever :)

Personally, I have always prefered Phillips over Sony. I've never had any harsh feelings about Sony, though, and I still don't.

    Edit:

My 1000th post. And I wasted it on giving an opinion nobody cares about. Blech!

Scarier then Sony keeping SoE and promoting the most arrogant incompitant devs?

I hope EA buys them, it would suit them right!

Mhmm, now there is some new light on this:

My favorite part was this I forgot what question the guy asked but when Julio Torres answered the first thing out of he's mouth was "well if where here next year" then the room got quit and i fell out of my chair.

Heh, I grew up with Sony entertainment products.  My parents have brought quite a bit of Sony stuff over the last 6 years, CD player, VCR, Playstation, TV, camera (up to the 2nd one now), video camera and a DVD player.  None of them have had any problems and most are at least 5 years old (the CD player is 14 years old).

Ironically enough, there's a parallel here between this attitude Sony has developed about its products, and SOE's handling of Galaxies.  People will play it just because it says "Star Wars" on it, no matter how idiotic it becomes.

There is no doubt that SONY has problems on many levels and perhaps they should start selling off problem dvisions, heck they already sort of did that with thier record division partnering with BMG music to become Sony -BMG music.  An out and out Sale and total dimissal of thier staff would make me very happy.

Work isn't a welfare program.  You have to earn your job every day by doing it well.  When you do your job badly, you get fired.  You then find another job and either do better or get fired again...

If I'd done my job as badly as SOE has done theirs I know for a fact I'd not be working anywhere in my industry.

Jestor was talking about Sony as a whole.  That includes alot of factory workers, etc 99% of whom don't make the company decisions.  When a company dies it doesn't just affect the "evil high management", it also affects those at the low end that may have no other means of income.  So when you accuse a company of not listening to the little people, it pays for you not to forget about the little people when you wish for said company to die

well I'd be satisfied with only the closing of SoE: Austin office and sacking of the Smedder

Smed is a dead man walking.  It's a matter of WHEN he gets fired, not if.  Sony is being reorganized all over the place in an effort to patch the holes in the sinking ship, no way he doesn't go down at this point, considering that SOE is performing as badly as the rest of Sony.

Who was the head honcho for the CU? I bet he is no more (SWG wise). Jeff Freeman was the "father" of NGE and he is gone. To me it seems Smedder has excellent dodging skills... I hope you're right but damn that man is hard to dispose of. What sploitz does he use?

Smed has been around since SOE was still Verant (SWG was in development pre-SOE, btw).  Smed isn't going to be fired over SWG, one failure wouldn't do it.  His problem is EQ/EQ2 are doing even worse (they've both lost on a percentage basis more of their subs, believe it or not than SWG has).

EQ _IS_ SOE...  No way he can survive the crash and burn there.  Why do you think they are doing classic EQ servers?  They are desperate to revers that crash.

  • ObraikObraik Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 7,261
The new EQ servers aren't "classic".  Basically, when you start on the server you have no access to the expansions but the mechanics still work the same as the current servers.  The server works together to unlock each expansion until eventually they end up being the same as the rest.

Yeah, your right. I was just focused on SWG... but i've read the figures for all SoE games and it doesn't look good

I think Smed's already gone down, that's why he still has his job.

My parents have a Sony big screen TV five years old and the POS broke in May. Took the stupid sony tv repair shop 2 months to fix it too they just got it back this week. Talk about an amazing amount of incompetence. You pay top dollar for Sony products and all you get is crap. Needless to say their next TV will not be a Sony and they have bought Sony TVs since the mid eighties.
