tvalentine... Since I know you from the SWG forums, I'll just say this. Think SWG... Only that this is a 3 weeks old game!
-Lack of content - Almost no quests
-Lag
Now don't get me wrong. I'm so far liking the game because it's full of potential and complexity. It just needs time! The devs really do respond and there are improvements daily.
SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
It also took 6 login attempts to get in game for that.
Not everyone has that problem. Some players can get in game and stay online for hours, but I am not one of them. Most evenings I try to login 2-3 times, and often give up after 15 minutes. I havn't been able to stay in game more than a few minutes when I do get in. CTD or lockups are common, when you can connect to the server.
Like many others, I have high hopes this game works out. I really want to play.
There are only 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't
thus why i said read up and make your own opinion
EDIT:
Not saying anything is wrong, just that its a little over bored with the facts.
Freudian slip there, Virtus?

As for the month or two wait, the only diffrence will be the time you loose which you could train your character in some of the crafting skills.

so your saying there not going to fix the lag or any other issues in 1-2 months?
and you dont have to be so rude, i mean im sure there is more to the lack of content statement. Like in a few posts ive read, about the no animal spawns.

As for spawns, Its due to the fact that they will never have static spawns for wildlife. Probable because the system has yet to be fully implemented. And remember animals, unless they are domesticated will never infest and area like they do in WoW.

And where do I say that quest are the only content???? Hell!!! If you give me a good sanbox game with only a tutorial I'd be a happy man. I'm only giving examples of what's wrong...

I really dont find anything wrong with the game. There is lag problems at around 3:00 to 7:00... After that, I usually get almost no lag at all. I have fun playing the game, I have been raiding... Training my skills, there is a few glitches but they dont really bother me.
Its like all MMORPG's, they all have a pretty rocky release.
ok, ive been exited about this game for a while and i wanted to write a professional level review for the game here but i dont have high enough rank so ill post my findings here.
Roma victor is an ambitious project, when complete it will allow players to do allot. supposedly you can even rise to the rank of emporer, currently thats far off. they have yet to inpliment ranged weapons, horses, brewing and a few other features. however right now its a pretty interesting game and for the monthly price it promises to be good(escpecially considering that if you become a finantial genius you dont need to put any more money into the game).
lets start with what everyone is talking about, the down points. roma victor is a project run by a small overworked team with few assets at hand. the engine is from scratch. currently people complain about some of the problems in the graphics but the graphics arent horrid. the terraign needs more detail, the players are low poly(the textures are pretty good) and they dont use any "fast grass" so the landscape can seem bare but its an ok start. the low point graphics wise is something called a skybox, youll reconise it as the backdrop. thats the picture behind the picture so to speak, currently in roma victor the player gets a nice view of some hills and low mountains all around him, the problem is that the skybox isnt particuarlly high reselution and with current technology the dev team could have easaly added an inpressive 3d "skybox" system.
early on the game had issues with connecting and lag. right now the issue is just connecting. i played ALL day today and experienced only a 15 minute period of high lag, right now things respond almost instantly, a good inprovement of the way it used to be and a sign of good things to come. the problem is actually getting in game. often players will try to sign in to be basically rejected by the server over and over. i have had few issues witht aht and more trying to just find a way to get the game to load fully, i could input commands but not play. i wound up having to commit suicide and restart the game, after that no more issues there. in some wilderness zones there are also problems with connection, players will find that they just cannot stay connected in those zones for some reason.
STEEP learning curve. this is a game that has no in game tutorial to speak of, it can be frustrating at first but ive worked with steep learning curve games before, like ww2online(not quite an rpg but oh well) and eve online. the community realy pulls together in this aspect and you will almost never find yourself alone when you are in need. however starting off you have a serries of "quests" that are designed to help you learn the game. the reality is that they just have you do things and dont realy teach jack.
despite these failings roma victor redeems itself through a few areas, these pieces of gold make me believe that over time roma victor will inprove and become a good product for anyone to buy, not just the hardcore gamer like it is currently.
the first place that the game redeems itself is the player wiki. i wish every mmorpg had one of these. some people may laugh at a "player made manual" but in the end the players learn the game better than the devs. most game manuals ive read are almost pointless, they are simplistic and dont cover much. roma victor's wiki will cover almost everything you could ever want to know about the game. the wiki is continually updated(unlike most "manuals") and has all sorts of things that NEVER wind up in normal game manuals. have a question about just terminology in game? use the wiki search engine! dont know how to make an item? search the wiki. its an incredibly powerfull tool and it helps the community work together instead of bickering. in fact in roma victor for realism you dont have a map, but if you realy get lost you can check the wiki for a couple player made maps and find your way around(one even includes the "board" wich shows when you will cross over to a new zone)
the second place it redeems itself is the sheer ammount of potential it has. right now the ammount of things you can craft can seem astronomical, however they arent even a 10th of what the full system will likely have. an example is right now i believe you can only build roundhouses, the plan in the future is to allow players to have villa and pretty much any building they want that would have shown up in the ancient world. players currently can do alot of things, including farming. the very project itself is continually being updated and there will be more content added over time, though i dont believe much will show up in the form of quests.
the game's combat system is also refreshing. in other rpgs you just click attack and you watch your character swat away. in rv tactics come into play alot more, fighting is just something that both your character in game and you yourself learn in roma victor. a skilled low level player can do pretty good against every oponent(though a higher level still will kick serious ass). when missle weapons get included the combat will be pretty damn inpressive.
overall i will give the game a 6. potentially it can earn a 9 or a 10. however right now it needs alot of work and it has to make that long treck to the top of the list. roma victor's staff is one of the most dedicated teams ive seen and they allready have realy gotten to work. they have fixed alot of the issues in lag, every day the logins get better, in game bugs decreese and overall things get better. they do need to spend some time and effort upgrading the sounds(its a real let down) and fixing some graphical annomilies.
-bottom line-
if you arent hardcore and willing to "work" dont buy the game now. wait a year, then buy it. by then alot of the major kinks will have been worked out and the game will have gotten on the highway to sucess and got the game acellerating in progress .
- Lag... servers can't handle it
- Engine... this game uses a higher % of your CPU and memory then WoW while the graphics look 10 years old.
.
- Empty world.. the world is simply empty! In total 2 small dead settlements and a forest.
- Terrain.. the terrain is built up from flat green textures. Simply flat ground textures for LONG distances.
- Vigiour.. its sorta stamina.. your energy bar. It takes so much energy to walk you can hardly walk 1km when you start the game. What has that guy been doing his whole life before you started playing? And you cannot talk either when resting 'coz that takes to much enegry. So when you've to run longs distances (you've coz everything is far away like clay pits) ... you've to rest a lot and you cannot talk to your mates 'coz that would take lots of energy away.
- bugs.. the game is still full of bugs. Fanboys say thats no problem.. they're patient. Decide for yourself.. do you wanna pay for something on which everyone agrees isn't finished yet? Even the fanboys agree it isn't finished.
- fanboys.. only guys who play it seem to be fanboys.. all they say is "the devteam only exists outta 3 or 4 persons so therefor the game isnt that good yet but it will be!" .. the game hasnt been good for years of devolpment i don't know why it should be better in 3 months? The facts the devs are only with couple guys doenst make a game good. I would rather sponsor the Red Cross 20 bucks then the devs.
- No free trial.. good games have free trials.. RV is so bad it hasn't a free trial.
- Fighting.. they state on their website this game has a advanced fighting system and you can fight in huge battles. Nothing is true of that. They just fixed the collisionbug.. when i played you could simply walk trough others, whats the use of a formation then? There are no missions and the couple NPC guards seem to be pretty über warriors. The NPC's dont seem to have vigiour? 'coz you will probally have the change to hit them twice (takes about 20% vigiour total) but when they hit you it also takes vigiour (and wounds). Besides.. the server and engine can't handle to many players so big battles are just a dream.
- heaven...they call it elysium or something.. i call it crap! if you end up in heaven you've to walk up a hill to some guy and talk to him. Then you're teleported back to earth. But don't forget! you've just been slain and with a bit of unluck you will have stamina wounds. And with stamine wounds you can only walk 100 meters LOL. Think of that.. you've to walk up that hill with stamina wounds.. then you've to walk all the freaking way back to your villages with the same wounds. then heal (takes a lotta time!) ... AAAaaah.. die and wait for freaking half a day before fighting again. Thats no fun for no one.
- crafting...seems the only good thing about RV is the stuff you can craft. But crafting is boring and hardcore. You've to walk for ages to get to rivers and claypits etc. Then ofcourse there are no carts so you've to carry it yourself which means you can only take about 30 clay per run. Creating a simple claypile right next to a pit takes 40-60 minutes.
- almost everything the main site states is a big fat lie.. check the forum good. The reason so many are complaining is not for fun.
- this list can be endless
Ok, this news isn't worth any awards, but its a good sign.
And what exciting things did you do during this extended playtime?
What exotic locations did you uncover? Did you explore bustling urban centers and engage a variety of NPCs for trade and information about the surrounding world? Which beasts did you slay? How many foes did you vanquish? Or did you just build clay piles?

Oh I know, I was just curious what he did when he finally was able to log on for a couple hours. He must of been excited about being able to start on his clay piles.:P
I saw this player the other day, he had the best looking clay pile, it was impressive, and it only took him 8 hours to build.:P

I was limping because it seems I forgot how to walk on the salveship from Greece. I can only go a couple blocks before I tire.
Now, having completed that adventure, I set of for the baths for a quick dip and scrape. A clean body for a clean mind to better serve my master. Returning to my master, he demanded to be fed a fresh fish fillet. I briskly hobbled down to the river with my spear and never caught a thing. Realizing my spear was getting pretty torn up by missing fish and prolly hitting fishshaped rocks at the river edge, I found a grindstone and repaired it. On my way back to the river I found a fillet of fish just sitting on the side of the road. No one seems to be near it...What luck! After brushing it off I served it up to master. He loved it, and even gave me 24 sesterces. He's such a good master.
After that brilliant display of my fishing abilities, master asked that I make him a...you guessed it...a pile of clay. What joy! I set off for the river edge, in search of clay wads to start my pile with.
My adventure will continue later today.
