I'm not sure what your daffynition of "dead" is, but mine would be servers shutdown. Not combined, shutdown. Right now, I'm in a guild with 490 members. Were in a raid of 49 players. I can't speak for any other server, guild, group or player. But there are a few of us, still here, still active... Oh, and I'm not on either of the Progression Servers.

I hardly doubt Vanguard will flop. I know quite of few people playing lots of differnt games right now (EQ2. EQ1, WoW, CoH, SWG) that are moving instantly to Vanguard. I think everyone is very nervous that vanguard is going to become the new game out there. Obviously the subs won't be 6 million (I still don't believe that number, given the fact that everyone says they quit the game), but then again no one wants that many anyways.
Oh now, I think EQ is dying dying dying. For one the claasses are TOTALLY unbalanced. For two, PoR was the worst expansion ever and for quick money we bought it, it was broken and really really hasnt changed abit. I am quitting, well I quit to move on to another game hopefully that gives me some initiative not rip off city. Sick of it, I played for almost 7 years, it has lost its touch. In December, expect yet another expansion COUGH---rip off that is yet again broken with UGH 75 levels, more leveling so fun! and I just dont see it changing at all.
I talked to someone that knows ALOT about developing and computer programs. Unfortunately, the game keeps getting developed on top of another zone if you wil or understand. Example, Say you improve the character looks wise this expansion or 5 expansions ago and you are raiding. If you have all of your models on or even if you dont, there are triple+ the amouint of people in that raid of 50 because of transposing, thats what is going on, hence lag and major problems with YOUR computer because your computer cant handle it and much much more. Only the elite and thats ok whatever, with ubah computers win here and yes I have a good one, I feel sorry for the good players that do play that dont.
I loved EQ seriously and it was a great great game but its lost is pizazz and appeal to me. Just not interesting anymore especially LFG classes that cant get a group because they arent either a cleric, enchanter, melee. Just absolutely ridiculous but then again I work all day, I am not logging on all day JUST to go LFG or sit there while GL deals with "broken" issues and petitions. One more mistake, does Sony ever ever have staff meetings to do loot stats. When your a big raider and a new expansion comes out, seems to me you would want to MAKE people stay in the game. When the stats on the items that drop are the same as the expansion before there is something wrong or actually sometimes the stats dont even make sense most of the time. Whos talking to who or we making it up as we go along.
Anyway, sorry to say I retired just recently not because I wanted to but because its boring and theres nothing in the game for high raiders. Some of the logic to the game is gone, especially for Demi Plane access, FUN FUN stuff but can lower guilds get there I dont think so possibly in 10 years when strats are posted.
Bah long winded sorry, I just retired and left a game I really liked thats all. annnd yes I have found another game to play that doesnt take my RL time away from me anymore. Peace out, its been a great run.
For all I can tell, EQ has a much higher percebntage of people comming back after initially leaving that any othe game out there. Vanguard with make a dent in EQ population, but just like with all the other games EQ have outlived, people will come back.
EQ will not die in a normal sence .It will shrink an shrink over time eventualy to one server.That may take a few years .EQ will always be in their cable company style subscription plans im sure.
SoE an many players make the mistake i think about EQ.The game is a good game not a great game.Its the PLAYERS who make it great.Look at the rateing here for their comunity as suport to this.But at the rate SoE likes to shoot it self in the foot, one only wonders how many feet they have left or rounds left in the gun.

EQ will never go away people are too addicted to it. I played it for several years. And now with the graphics update it will be more popular than ever. Vanguard still looks more interesting to me
