Coming back -- do they sell it online?

Hey all,

I'm coming back to FFXI after quitting right around the Chains of Promethia expansion.  Unfortunately I've replaced my disks!  Since I would have to buy that expansion anyway I figure I might as well buy the new $20 set since with a free month and that included make it a fairly nice deal.

However, I'm currently living in a fairly remote area (but with broadband, go figure) and its about 2 hours travel to get to any of the big stores that would sell the boxed disks.  So before I order it shipped I've been trying to figure out if they sell this package through a download like most other MMO companies (so far I've been unsucessful in finding one, so I'm not hopeful)?  Also, if you are reactivating an old account, do you still get a free month thats included with these disks, or is that new account only?

Thanks!

They do not offer it for download online.

And the free month is only for new people.

If he cancelled his account around the time CoP came out, his old account is gone anyways, so he'll *be* "new people".

If you're living in the US, try going to gamestop.com. You can buy it, have it shipped over night, and i'll be on your doorstep before Noon the Next day.

He means buying a CD key and downloading the game online.
A lot of other games offer that.

I understood what he ment, but he also said he lives 2 hours from any of the big stores. The gas alone would cost more than shipping & handling.

This is crazy lol, I also quit right after CoP came out and now I just decided to return to FFXI =P

Keep in mind that your registration codes were only needed when you first created your Playonline ID - i.e. if you re-install the game and assuming you still have your original playonline ID/pass, you will never need the cd keys (aka registration codes) FFXI does NOT ask for your cd key when installing, ONLY when creating a new POL ID. In that case, you merely need the discs to install. You can just borrow them from a friend or something (this is NOT illegal,  I was in the same situation and I asked playonline.com, they said it is fine, as long as you own the unique POL ID), install and save $20.

The expansions work the same way as the original game, all the registration codes are tied to your POL ID, so as long as you have that you don't need the codes.

Um, not quite. You need your codes (at least the POL code) to make new Content IDs. If you ever decide you want to roll up a new character, you're gonna need those codes.

Ohh right >.< My content ID's were not removed when I came back (because I reactivated it a few times in the past to keep it from being deleted). But since the OP quit a long time ago his content ID's are probably gone =-/

In that case I guess you are stuck either ordering it online and have it delivered, or go to a store =(

Yes, in my opinion this is a glaring fault.  I once played FFXI and enjoyed it, but had to cancel my subscription for a while.  When I wanted to play again, I was told that my account was gone and I had to buy the whole game again.  Meantime, my original disks were all intact.  I can understand paying for the online service, but forcing returning players to buy the boxed game again is unacceptable to me, and the reason I don't play FFXI anymore.

Well, when you want to stop playing the game you should've canceled the Content ID (the one that you actually pay for) and kept the Playonline ID active, because the POL ID / services are free anyway and will last forever. That way you won't be paying for anything and you can still come back to the game without buying a new box. Your content ID, however, will be deleted (permanently) after three months of inactivity. (i.e. 3 months after you stopped paying them) however, now POL has a new policy that says you might be able to recover content ID's that were canceled in the past 12 months.

Special promotions such as the Return to Vana'diel event (hosted last year and this year end of spring/beginning of summer) allows any old players to return and recover their characters. (I think, I personally did not try that)

When I stopped playing, I cancelled my content I.D. only, but after a year, the PlayOnline account got deleted.  At least they are making improvments, but when I inquired about returning, I had several converstions with support people from the game, and I was told that there was no alternative beside buying a new game.

As I understand it, regardless of the PlayOnline I.D., you need a new content I.D. and it can only be supplied with the CD Keys from the boxed game.  My CD Keys are "expired" in the eyes of Square Enix.

Are you serious? @_@ Man that sucks! I didn't know POL accounts could expire =/ I canceled mine in oct. 2004 and just last week I logged in and made a content ID perfectly fine, and I used the same cd keys I used back in 2004 (I was very wise to save the original cd's and boxes) Maybe some accounts are lucky and some just get sweeped out
