Quest based MMORPG

Is there such a thing???

I am looking for a game that I can play and rewards me through quests and not raiding or random drops.

I have been playing WOW ever since release and frankly I am tired of it.  I just cant take running the same instance over and over again for a chance of a random drop and then  only get if I have the fricken DKP.  And don't get me started on rep grinding argh.

I want to be able to play with freinds and accomplish goals together and be rewarded for our effort.

And please do not say play a single player game because that defeats the pupose of wanting to be part of a community.

Thanks for your input.

Everquest 2 has quite a lot of quests. altough I recommend you wait for Archlord, which is scheduled for a september release. it has over 2500 quests, so enough to keep all quest lovers busy for a while.

You should take a look at some PVP games.

No, not like that crap they label PVP in WoW. I mean, real PVP games.

There is nothing like going out with a bunch of friends and conquering another group of people... expecially when you get the best rewards from player drops. :)

That sounds good but can a person get the nice gear without needing to raid?  Or is EQII the same as WOW, Raid or die?

For some classes the raid dropped stuff isn’t even the best.  Any caster, for example, should be looking for power regain gear fist and a lot of good power regain equipment is quested.  Spell quality is also a very big factor in EQ2 and for the most part you don’t need to raid to get Master quality spells and combat arts.   Overall the best equipment is still raid dropped, however.

Personally I don’t like the principle, but in practice I find this less of an issue in EQ2.  In general unless you are a hardcore player dedicated to grinding your way to max level and AC points you will never be in a position where the only way to advance your character is to raid.  This is especially true if you quest, there are so many quests you will never reach the point where you run out of things to do.

Certainly no one will look down on you for not having fabled (raid dropped) gear because most people you see will still be working on getting legendary gear.  In terms of show off value I’m generally more impressed by someone with a “Relic Keeper” tag in their name (gained by completing at least 20 heritage quests) then someone with a little fabled gear to their credit.

Anyway, yes the best gear in EQ2 comes from raid drops but it isn’t quite the same raid or die attitude you see in WoW after level 60 because there are so many other things to do.

If you see "go kill x this", "go kill y that", "go deliever this" as quests, then EQ2 and WOW are the ones for you. Silkroad online is the same too but with a larger number on x and y, but it's free.

Play DAoC on a classic server. The expansion pack Trials of Atlantis, brougth raiding to DAoC. A classic server, uses all other expansion packs but ToA. On a DAoC classic server, most of the stuff you will use is crafted - Simply the best gear avaible.

I have been looking at Dark Age and I like what I see so far.

    Wait.

You're asking for a quest-based MMO, but you're complaining about instances...

I don't think there are too many MMORPGs that focus on end-game/max level quests.

EQ2 is your best bet, but SWG and DDO both offer quests to level up on too all the way to max level.

Are you looking for a game that you can "quest" all the way to max lvl instead of just kiling random creatures?  Or are you asking for a game where the quest are somewhat important and very interest?

If the first case is right...then there are plently of games that offer this, but it's mostly just going to be "go kill 5 bunnies" quests, which isn't much different than going out all killing 5 random bunnies.

If the second case is what you're looking for...then good luck, because I've certainly never heard of it.

You should try DDO then. DDO offers pretty good quests with traps, puzzles and etc.

And DDO is dying because there isn't enough subscribers, and being a very group oriented game.. Well, you can sit pretty long and wait for a group. Not to mention, afaik, it lacks endgame content.

I am not complaining about instances per say.  I just want them to mean somthing. Example get quests to go into instances and kill big bad boss and then get reward of nice items.  What I do not want is to grind the same instance 40 times for a chance of my gear dropping.

The whole grind instance thing is the worst idea ever IMO.  I know some people like them and that is good for them.

Also I am not looking for a game that has alot of collect x items.  I just want the quests to be fun and rewarding.  I do not mind doing a long chain of quests in group or solo as long as at the end it was worth it.

While i haven't experienced much of DAoC, i've run acros some pretty fun quests..
    1)
Epic quests. You get your first epic quest at level 5, and every fifth level thereafter. It's a quest chain, that tells an deep story.
Like, my thanes first epic quest: A seer have gotten a vision, something is wrong. I head to a city, and talk with a shield smith who have been troubled by a thief lately. I sit, and wait for darkness.. Then look around for a thief, that moves around - Once i get close to him, i have to use a torch to uncover him. Then kill him. It was a tomte, which is a kind of lepricon. I report back to the shield smith, then to the seer.. Next quest: The seer knows a man who is in contact with a renegade tomte, who shares information for money. Travel to the man, then to the tomte - The story goes on.

Another fun quest i tried, req. me to talk with hostile ghosts, to find out what was wrong. Once i had talked to one, i had to think about the story he told me, then speak the right word(type), so that he could become happy - And finaly leave the earth.

    See this sounds fun.

The upcoming Tcos is quest based leveling. And their Ancestor Quests 'endgame' idea is very interesting also.
