I love Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk this........................................................................

Man-O-man, I'd give my two front teeth to have a really good Sci-fi/Cyberpunk MMOG...I'd even be willing to wait a few years to get it.

I don't know about the rest of you but whenever I think about genetic enhancements, nanobots, cyberware implants, and the like...my naughty parts start misbehaving! I can't even watch the science channel anymore without getting upset and having to excuse myself to the bathroom.

So, Id like to get your ideas on what style of Cyberpunk you think would make an excellent MMOG and why.

* Terminator series

* Bladerunner

* Shadowrun

* Ghost in the Shell series

* The Matrix (I'm trying to forget about the fake "The Matrix Online", so let's consider it a do-over.)

* William Gibsons' Sprawl Trilogy (if you haven't read these Master Strokes, you can get them here.)

* System Shock

* Deus Ex

There are more, but these are the important ones...

My personal favorite is Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy: Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

  • Deus Ex is an awesome FPS/RPG hybrid.  I've played it through 3 times 3 different ways.  If they had a Deus Ex MMO I'd play it.

    I'd consider a Sci-Fi/cyberpunk game, if I didnt have to play a human in it. Otheriwse no dice.

    They need to make a game!! SHADOWRUN FTW!! Orc Samarai or a Darkelf Decker!! WOOT!!

    I would love to see a Shadowrun or Bladerunner MMORPG. Something like that, however, would mean breaking from the flock of other development houses and not a lot of companies are willing to do that. So we'll get even more fantasy MMORPGs. YAY!

    On a side note, I think that the Deathstalker series of books would make for an awesome MMORPG, though it's not cyber punk.

    One game you mentrioned really struck a cord. System Shock. Never since SSII have I had such a thrilling and dramatic experience in a game. I even played it with someone in another state once with the multiplayer mode. To run a group through it MMORPG style would be incredible! Maybe SHODAN escaped again and created an empire for herself somehow, and this time they didnt turn on her. She then turns her attention toward the megacorp ruled corrupt earthlings, and in the turmoil a underground group of misfits break away from corporate domination and form thier own nation to fight shodan and the corporations. 3 possible factions to play!

    Shodan

    Earth Megaconglomerate

    Revoluntionaries

    Shodan has immense BioTechnology and cybernetic knowledge, like Shadows from B5 maybe.

    Earth Mega has several colonies in the galaxy and maybe one alien race allied with them or somthing.

    Revolutionaries could be a mixture of both, and hold a small territory or somthing, from former Shodan and Earth Mega holdings.

    The possibilities are endless!

    Science Fiction is a lot more popular in books, television shows, and movies than fantasy; yet finding a good Sci-Fi MMOG is nearly impossible.

    Sounds like you would like Shadowrun...it has your elves, orcs, dragons, etc.. But once you start genetic/cybernetic enhancements you'll no longer be human...strictly speaking.

    Phantasy Star Universe is coming out by the end of this year, pretty much the closest you're going to get.  That and its just awesome.

    Couple more Shadowrun fans I see! SR would make an awesome MMOG...in the right hands!

    I share your frustration with the industry wide dog-pile on fantasy MMOGs. I've got my fingers crossed for the Bioware MMOG project...it could be Sci-Fi.

    One rumor says it will be a Star Wars MMO ala KotR.

    That would be good news indeed! Beyond that, I'm really glad to see another big developer thowing it's hat into the ring...That's what this genre needs more than anything else, strong competition!

    All good ideas. They really should reroll the Matrix IMO.  It's far to late in the show for that though.  I'm not sure that they would get the client base they are looking for after ruining it the first time.  Just look at all of the LOTR games that came out that arent really that good.  They have rerolled that one too many times.  I'm sure they still get a few suckers with every different version but they arent really changing much, just tweaking the story here and there also using different graphics engines.  Overall the game will prob be the same. though

    I would have to go with Dues Ex FTW!!

    I'm finding it hard to top Guild Wars, Prophecy edition ATM.

    I would love a KoTR MMORPG, I doubt that it will happen though. More than likely, we will see a Baldur's Gate or Never Winter Nights MMORPG from BioWare.

    Well the star wars thing is a rumor, but I really doubt it will be a D&D MMO since that brand has been out already.  I also saw someone say it will be Fallout which I also doubt since Interplay(?) has had a deathgrasp on the rights to that for a while.

    Fallout would be great especially with a nice feat system etc.

    Phantasy Star Universe isn't even close to being Cyberpunk...Cyberpunk is gritty, dark, and dystopian.

    Yep, that would make an excellent MMOG...IF it were in the right hands! System Shock has tons of potential but I really don't trust many developers to do the right thing when it comes to breathing life into highly regarded IP.

    The best MMORPG out there is sci-fi, Eve online.

    Ghost in the Shell is another awesome Cyberpunk setting, although, for a MMOG, I wouldn't want it to be in the anime style.

    Add to your list the World of Darkness PnP RPG system. It's not scifi but it's got cyberpunk written all over it, especially Mage.

    Also.. no System Shock 1/2? Deus Ex was nothing compared to SS2, and if anything takes it's entire inspiration from the game comming as close as you can to litterally stealing RP systems from it. If you never played it, find it, buy it if you most, and play it. I'm telling ya you'll never be the same, especially if your as HUGE a fan of scifi/cyberpunk as you say :)

    I've been waiting patiently for a World of Darkness MMOG to come out for years now. The closest appears to be the new one from Tulga, but given their last one being the worst ever made up until DnL. It's vampires vs werewolves and they insist it's has nothing to do with the WoD, but you just KNOW they got the idea after a few games of it on saturday night :p

    Lol...World of Darkness cannot, in any way, be considered Cyberpunk.

    I have System Shock on the list...I just forgot to put series beside it.
