Well from what I understand (I personally haven't tried them) the Everquest Progression servers are catching on like wildfire.  Enough so that they either are planning or already have made a second Progression server.  Would I say it's dying... no... Would I say it's just the beginning.... no not really.  I'd say it's still got a nice niche in the mmo society and has a nice healthy life going for it for awhile.

Lots of people in my guild still play it and have no intetion of quitting any time soon. We did have alot of people go back for the progression server thing but it seems to have died off and they went back to their old servers.

I don't see EQ going anywhere. SOE may mess up games but they're pretty good about keeping games online.

If Vanguard accomplishes making the "EQII" that "EQII" was meant to be and that EQ players wanted it to be I'd put money on it dying

It probably won't accomplish that though.

It has seriously notably aged now so the numbers are invevitably going down. However, EQ's next expansion is being nicknamed 'EQ1.5' as its meant to be being sold as a stand alone game. This could gain few numbers depending on what they've modernized in the game eg. the graphics and certain gameplay aspects.

Did you happen to see the videos from E3? Vanguard IS EQ2.

I don't know if it's blossoming so much as holding ground and I really don't think it's dying either.

I'm sure it's unique subscription count is probably down in the single digits by now but whatever... that's not that big a deal. New servers coming, still lots of players, it's part of the SoE game package and over all it's still a a decent game. I just don't see an overiding reason why SOE would shut it down.

Personally, I think EQ1 may well outlive some of SOE's other games, even for nostalgic reasons alone.

Unless they make a dramatic turnaround I can think of at least one SOE title that will get cancelled long before EQ1 does ;)

I do not see EQ1 going anywhere anytime soon.  SOE is revamping the zones.  Several of them are already completed.  Freeport, N. Ro, Nektulos, S. Ro, just to name a few.  The progression servers are going great guns.  A new expansion is on its way.  EverQuest will be around for a long time to come.

I would have expected EQ1 to die out long ago but then I (finally) realized what some people value most in an MMOG. It is not mechanics (rules), gameplay, graphics or content, it is the one thing the developers have the least control over . . . the community. Considering that SOE is continually improving the other aspects that people value in an MMOG I now believe that EQ1 will be around for a long, long time -- as long as the community is stable.

Even without new expansions, EQ1 generates decent cash flow and has very low overhead and expenses so I imagine that SOE will try to keep it alive as long as possible. I doubt, however, that they will invest more than they have to so expansions the size of Kunark of Velious are probably not going to happen. They are not after large amounts of new players, which might explain the minimal marketting campaigns, but to retain the existing ones and keep them interested and excited enough to get enough of their friends to join to offset any losses.

Long live EQ1!   (though, I must admit, I left it for EQ ][   )

No, it's not. I've seen more than this one video.

Well, if you mean it's like the current EQ2 (the real one that is) it's nothing like it. If you mean its almost just like EQ1 before SoV+ then probably. That's not a good thing IMO.

I don't think Everquest is at the end of its life yet. Personally, I think the only old school mmorpg that MIGHT drop down dead soon is Asherons Call.

IMO anyone looking for a good sequel to EQ1 needs to re-try EQ2.... it's tons better now than it was at release.  Matter of fact it's tons better now than a year ago (and it was much better then too).....  It's improved with age so far.  I recently resubscribed due to the improvements after a free reactivation try of the game on my account.

Definitely worth going back to  if you left shortly after release.  And if you haven't tried it?  Then definitely worth a spin.  The free trial has been completely reworked and is now much more like the actual game experience too.

EQ will be hard to kill. It's holding steadfast in the wake of all these new games. It's subscription numbers are only about half of what it was at it's peak. SOE is making good money off it and continue to not only support it but expand it. Personally after 7 years i just got burned out on it. I think EQ2 in its current form is a fine sequal for anyone that enjoyed EQ. I enjoy EQ2 these days.

Yep, I'm another old time EQ1 addict that's enjoying EQ2.

Any predictions made about EQ1's death inevitably end with the prophet getting bitten on the ass.
