Hyper-realistic, gritty sci-fi movies?

britocabritoca Member Posts: 1,484
So I watched one of my favorite movies last night called Andromeda Strain.  It's old, but if there's a nerdy side in you, it's worth watching it.

It's got that hyper-real and gritty feel to it, hardly any soundtrack whatsoever, with extreme attention to small details and lots of technical dialogue, makes me feel like I'm sitting in the room with the actors.

It's the same style of cinematography as 2001 or Dr. Strangelove.

Anyone know about other sci-fi movies using this same style?

I really enjoyed reading the book....I have never had the opportunity to see the movie though.  Is it worth renting if I can find it?

Or is it Mystery Sceince Theatre worthy, which would also make it worth watching.

Hmm, never seen it. I suck.

How about Blade Runner, by Ridley Scott? Very gritty movie, at least I found so, and it's really kind of a cult classic sci-fi movie.

To this day it's one of my favorite Sunday night, chill out flicks.

Never herd of it man...I don't know I might have seen it before.

if you liked 2001 and Dr. Strangelove I am pretty certain u'd like it as well.  A lot of people consider it dull but they're not really into sceince/experimentation analysis, etc  And it's an old movie so there's funny stuf in the mix, namely the "leading-edge" technology, hehe

Blade Runner is awesome, that's also in my collection, but it's already a bit more glossy and lighter on the tecno-babble.  But man, I love Blade Runner.

Andromada Strain, Bladerunner, and 2001 great movies! They are some of my top "rainy-dayoff" type movies. Here is another one, The Fifth Element, it is not close to the ones above, but it will get you through a long afternoon. (You either love it or hate it)

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.

I have to throw my hat behind BladeRunner...great movie, Rutger Hauer is pretty awesome in it.  As far as gritty sci-fi movies, I don't think they come much grittier than Total Recall.......okay so maybe I just wanted to get a quick rise out of you all...I am just kidding.

On a more realistic note of ones I would back, how about A Clockwork Orange and Twelve Monkeys?  I really enjoyed both of those and can watch them over and over and see new little things.

12 monkeys and clockwork orange! I forgot all about those.  Here are someothers "omega man" and Soilent Green. Not in the same ballpark as the afore mentioned, but maybe the same sport.

hehe, thanks guys, I've seen all of those.  As a matter of fact, they're all in my collection.  My hunger craves more of the same though!

You are forgetting 2010, that one is special effects paradise. And Alien, and Aliens.

But when I watch those more glitsy/recent ones I feel more like and observer than a participant, u know what I mean?

When I watch 2001/Andromeda Strain I feel like I'm sitting right there in the same room with them.  Awesome stuff!

Seen it as well, but it was a long time ago.  Thanks for reminding me, I'll have to add that to my collection.

I know its not realistic, but man was I surprised how much I liked it, I am talking about Serenity.  That was a damn good movie, then I found out it was a TV show! So I got the DVD set, I am so ticked that fox cancelled it.  What an amazing show, and great movie.

Now its on the list of my favourite movies.

I don't care for the Andromeda series so I don't think I'd like the actual movie.

Oh no Vixen, this is an old (1971) movie not related to any TV series.  The name is just a coincidence.

here: wikipedia article on Andromeda Strain (watch out for spoilers)

no way man, that part at the end when she notices the cat is missing in the escape pod... and she goes back all the way to get it through those dark, steamy hallways and the alien could be hidding in any shadow, around any corner... man, talk about nerve-wrecking suspense.

Every time I watch that part I devour my fingertips, lol

But Aliens has mind-blowing special effects, even for today's standards.  Cameron set the benchmark really up there with that movie.
