I don't want to beat a dead horse... but what's the deal with Vista and DX10? Are current "next gen" cards going to become obsolete once it hits?
Why wouldn't the current gen cards be able to integrate DX10?
I have an X1900XTX, will it work with DX10 games? Will it be half a powerful with those games if it does work?
What type of specs will be needed to run VISTA, and run it WELL...
Any have any insight on the NEXT next-gen cards? Links? Anything?
I just built my rig not too long ago (4 months), I want it to kick some ass for at least a few more years... Any dice?

DirectX 10 will be a new breed of videocards. If the game ask for DX10 and you have a 1900XTX, you won't be able to play the game using the DX10 API and it will only use DX 9.0c.
So a lot of people are upset since there's all these new SLI and Crossfire cards coming out that won't work in Vista right off the bat.
If you read, Vista will not support multi-GPU setups (SLI/Crossfire) untill a patch or whatever.
Your system will be fine for a few years, but ONLY Vista will have DX10 support.
So Vista = DX10. XP will NOT support DX10.

GAY!! So does that mean there's no way to patch a current card to run DX10!? What will these new cards be capable of?
I concur. There's no way you can make a DX9 do DX10. It's like asking a Ford Festiva to drive and handle like a space shuttle. Just won't happen.
The new cards will be able to handle more things on the screen and what not while not stressing the card as much.
A good example was what one of the devs. from Age of Conan said.
A person with DX10 will be able to "see more of the enemies" from a distance, see more trees, etc, while the DX9 user will only see stuff 80% of the distance DX10 can. (As for that number, I just pulled it out of my ass, so please don't expect 80% to be a solid figure).
So DX10 will do more and show more... I guess it will have better bump mapping, etc... don't really know yet.
Also will games support both, so would a DX10 game also be made available for DX9 systems, two versions, I guess...?
Besides, Direct X is not the best solution. Look at OpenGL. WoW usese OpenGL quite good.
DX10 FTL
DX10 will be nice. IMHO however, the main driving factor for Vista (especially for gamers) is that it will be the first mainstream windows based 64 bit OS (XP64 was by no means mainstream). So many people already have 64 bit processors that are being wasted. Finally, us windows folks will be able to effeciently use huge amounts of memory for single processes (in this case games). I believe it is going to make a huge difference in what we can expect out of the gaming industry.
I also expect drastic changes in available hardware specs because of Vista. Expect to see lots of single slot ATX motherboards supporting up to 10-20 gigs of ram. That combined with multi-core procs becoming the norm for gaming rigs, developers are gonna have allot more power to play with and may not be as patient for ALL of the consumers to catch up as they have in the past.
DX10 is just the icing on the cake.

I have the 7900 in my laptop, now its awesome, and well worth the money. I"ll prolly build a new desktop here in the next year, just to try the new gpus out and dx10.

If I'm reading this right it will just "broaden the horizon" as they say and allow for you to see further into the backgroud of the game? Sounds good to me, more line of sight means more room to snipe!
