I'm not entirely sure on this so I could be completly wrong here but... they have said there will be different types of servers, I guess PvP, RP, PvE etc. They've said something about a "law" system I believe to try and make it a more controled PvP enviornment though I think most of the PvP will be in the "RTS" zones with player keep seiges.
From what I have read, death seems to be more like the DAoC style where you respawn in another location (maybe a friendly keep) but they intend to give it a good enough penalty that people wouldn't use it as a form of transportation.
Haven't played Eve Online so I'm not sure what you mean by that, hope this covers it but again, I could be wrong
I think it will be more 'carebear' then 'worthwhile' as you describe it. That is the trend these days, because huge death penalties aren't very fun. They might have different servers that allow open PVP and such, but I don't think there are going to be Huge penalties that make you cry when you die, like in EVE.
I would love to see a game come out that has huge death penalties. I can remember playing EQ back in the day and you would die just after you hit a lvl and lose your lvl again. Sure it sucked, but it taught you a lesson about paying attention to what the hell you were doing.

Wow! I'm really looking forward to something in my entertainment product that sucks but teaches me a lesson! Especially a lesson like "You better logout fast if there seems to be any significant lag or you might lose a level, and don't try anything risky or challenging in this game, play very conservativley or you'll get penalizes".
Well, to each their own, but it would be nice to see an MMO that has avatars AND doesn't cater to the people who think like Pantastic. There definitely is a market for the death penalty, as EvE online has 120K subscribers and is growing. I just wish I could play a swords game that didn't simply have you turning into a ghost and running to your corpse.
I'd like to lose my stuff if I can't defend it.. I'd like to count on my mates to back me up and keep the bad guys at bay. I'd like to kill and loot the enemy.
Ah well, if the death penalty is WoW like I might as well stick with WoW and play EvE when I want the thrill of danger in my combat.
The developers are saying that this is going to be very pvp-oriented.
I'm actually pretty excited about this game. More so than I have been in a long... long.. time. I think they are going to really give the more adult-gamer exactly what we've been craving for.
To this date, I have yet to see a better pvp system than DAoC. It's been years since i've played that game, but it was original, and very entertaining in the pvp aspect of the game. I hope AoC will compete and surpass the daoc of old.
The combat itself is very interesting.. I can't wait to check it out!

That reminds me back a little after the release of Everquest. I was on a dial-up connection and had random connection issues while playing the game. I remember finally getting to level 20 so that I could give my character a surname and.... disconnect... came back and I was dead, level lost. I lost this level 5 times before I was able to secure it.
Death penalties are fine, they can be large if the game is balanced around it but I believe that losing levels due to death is well known to have been a bad idea.
Dark Age made you lose experience but not your level. In City of Heroes, you gained "exp debt" which made you level at half rate until the debt is paid. Penalties for dying are great, they make the game a little more exciting but you have to draw the line somewhere. You can't make a death turn into an oppotunity to switch off the computer, walk away and try again later.
I like the idea of experience debt for HOH and EQ2 .. There are somethings but they don't really hurt u much if u are not keep dying. If you do, u get to log out the whole night to let the debt gone and play on the next day.
