Like the others say, try it out first if you can.
I found it fun at start and played it a lot. And when we got double xp weekend I played even more, too much... now I'm kind of bored and can't play more then 2-3 hours.
When you start, take Borkes (or whatever the name is) missions they are fun and not the same over and over again.
So far missions and the community is great.
If it had some kind of craft system for your pets and character it would be even better. And its also a little bit too easy and it makes me feel dumb.
I enjoyed it for a while but it got old fast, the missions started to feel the same over and over and other than PVP wasn't much else to do IMO, fun for a little while but gets dull fast.

Erm... right. You're new to the whole MMO thing I guess.
Anyhow yes CoV is deffinately worth buying. There are just so many variations of character types, even within the same class as you can choose different powersets every time you start a character. The classes are really well balanced. You can solo or team up just as viably as the enemies scale on the size of your group. The Character creation system is the best of any game I'm played (and I've played a lot) but most importantly the gameplay is fantastic. Good mission design, great powers, good roleplay if that's your thing.
I was worried the community would be a bit young and "plz plz plz giv gold" if you know what i mean, the the community is great.
Buy it, I wish I'd played CoV sooner instead of wasting my time in Matrix Online and Ryzom. (I'm not having a go at either of them they just weren't for me).
NCSoft needs to take a leaf out of the Ryzom/EVE book and make it almost a single months payment to play the game. SO if you dont like it after the month , then simply quit.
Once a MMO has been out there a while there shouldnt be a big box price to get into it. Market is becoming too crowded and the concept of a "box" price is going to become more of a problem the more MMO's that get released. IN developement now are some potential WOW killers and that will further crowd the market.
As others suggested try the trial first. In the time I played the trial it got old fast. Basically any game where you dont have items to quest/fight for there is only so many times you can play the same thing over and over.
The game have a lot of cool armours and weapons... only one problem... you can't loot it...
Loot don't have to be UBER loot, or something that only the Hardcore people can get or the ones that know exploits etc. Loot is a nice goal for people. For me it is, even if it's normal loot.
Bring it! I'm 120% sure that more people will enjoy it. Same with a world open for all, missions outside, PvP server, Items for people to play with (RP).
Some people say that the community don't like PvP and loot. Pff, thats 5 people saying that. Then you have maybe 5000 people that leave the game every month. Why? There is NO loot. The PvP system sucks. The RP is bad.
It's kind of fun. When people are bored or angry over something they make a post about it on the forums. And all they get back is BOOO from a small group of fanbois.
The fanbois fear a change in the game and don't like new suggestion. When people leave and post what they missed in the game, then the fanbois just say "can I have your stuff" or "don't let the door hit you on your way out".
And the DEV's don't understand whats going on. They just delete the "leave" posts and miss all the information. Or maybe they have sex orgie or something and forget about the games... I dunno.
Then after 2 or 3 month more people leave and the game bleeds a lot. Later it will die.
At that time the DEV's start looking at other forums to find why people left. Panic! Panic! They find posts like maybe this one for example. Then they start working and working. After some months its done and they patch it.
Only one problem... it's old and people don't wanna go back. So sad, so sad.
The 7 day trial should leave you very impressed. I played the 14 day trial offered by Fileplanet not too long ago and did enjoy the game immensely. Nonetheless, you do begin to understand the reptition everyone tends to bash this game for. It's not like it's any worse grinding than your typical non-WoW MMO but there's a point where no powers just don't come soon enough.
I still think it will last most players a good 3 months minimum.

Its a great game, and I've played a lot of crummy ones.

Its got a few issues atm, like performance issues, powers that previously worked fine now crash some peoples systems or have sounds assoicated with them that don't fit thematically and the newest zones, Grandville and Recluse's victory, have need of many more bug fixes just to name a few straight from CoX's official forum.
So you don't waste your money, definitely get a trial to see if you run into these issues or more importantly see if you like the game(try to get a 14 day trial as that will definitely give you the feel of the game more than a 7 day).
It's an enjoyable game and easy to get into, the first 20 character levels are really fun to play but it can become somewhat of a grind. They have released some great "Issues" as they call them but their last one brought on some bugs that have hurt the reputation of the game. I've played it for a couple of years but have not been playing much lately and have been thinking of cancelling my account.
I agree that trying it is the best option, if you do like it don't buy in for more than a few months though to really give it a go.
