Hello all, and welcome to the "Battle of the MMO's report for the future" brought to you by your favorite Doctor of MMO gaming.
Blizzard's giant, bloated MMO World of Warcraft has millions subscribed. So many they almost lost count. I see WoW ads everywhere - on here, in magazines, even on TV sometimes. Nothing can seem to stop the WoW machine. But like every empire, it will fall. An Empire has a rise and a fall. Let me tell you something that you may have not thought of before, folks - WoW is a bag of hot air. It is isnt going to last. WoW brought in a ton of new MMO gamers that have not played any of the true classics out there (UO and Asheron's Call) and sadly think WoW is the best MMO out there when it is really simply mediocre. Thankfully, they arent brainwashed, and with the whole slew of new and promising MMO's coming our way, WoW is not going to hold out for much longer. And once the bubble bursts, there are going to be a ton of new MMO gamers searching for the right game.
There are a ton of new MMO games that are shaping up to be simply great. And yes, they are the big boys with big minds and big bucks behind them. Get ready for them to duke it out soon enough! This information Im dealing you is based on fact and not my personal preference.
The Super Heavyweight Division:
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - Mythic, the creators of DAOC are developing this beast. DAOC is a solid MMO and it has some of the best organized PVP around. It set a new standard for games and ushered in the 3rd generation. WAR is looking to definitly be one of the top MMO's out there. It has your standard linear class system, a grind, and a rocking PVP system. Its definitly going to be DAOC x 10 adding a bit of flavor to it.
Punch type: Knockout
Age of Conan - Funcom made Anarchy Online, which is still puffing away today, even though you can get a basic subscription for free. Age of Conan to my pleasure and those to the old school gaming community, is taking a UO/AC turn with no classes and a skillbased system. Combat and PvP is based more on the players skill, which is a delight to many oldschoolers. You even can aim where you attack your opponent - like the head, torso, or legs. It has less of an emphasis on grinding and more on combat and PvP. This combined with a RvRish system make Age of Conan probably even better sounding than WAR. We'll have to see. This game is definitly looking great.
Punch type: Knockout
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - The glowing daughter of the Everquest trilogy. Much to the dissapointment of fans Sigil signed up with SOE for the support. Nonetheless, Vanguard is a strong competitor touting the mirage of Everquest in its screenies. Vanguard has grinding rivaling those of the asian MMO's, a strict class system, and restricted PvP. This game is for people who love PvE. Even though it is shutting out people that want more flavor to the game, just becuase of the fact that these are the brilliant minds behind EQ and the bucks being put behind it make this game a top contender.
Punch type: Hook
Heavyweight division:
Archlord - Another rough PVP centric game, not much information is up on Archlord, yet it is already shaping up to be one of the best. The sound quality we already know is fantastic, being recorded by the famous London Symphony orchestra. The music and sound move is genius, implementing passionate chords and tunes into a game I think is very essential to keeping the players happy. It can really spice up a game and make it very interesting. The idea of having a player becoming the most powerful player in the game has both pros and cons, however for one thing, as you can imagine.
Punch type: Knockout
Tabula Rasa - Neocron was the first game to implement features of an FPS into the MMO world. Neocron actually kicked butt. Sadly, due to the negelection of the developers, it slowly degenerated more and more into crap. SOE picked the baton up with Planetside. Planetside actually did quite well, and all players that played the game said that it was some of the most fun theyd ever had. Now take Tabula Rasa, the answer to all of your prayers. The ultimate MMO that uses the player's real life skills, this game gives a fantastic blend of FPS gameply to RPG elements with the MMO player community on top of it. Tabula Rasa is looking very strong.
Punch type: Uppercut
Hero's Journey - The ultimate detail to a story, Hero's Journey offers the genius idea of players creating their own story for their character. This is what the roleplayers have been waiting for. This game has the ability to dominate the market, but only time will tell.
Punch type: Uppercut
Gods and Heroes - Another fresh MMO, who wouldnt love to command a group of NPC soldiers? This game is another fresh and new type of game that is going to come out and can hit them with that sucker punch needed to win it. Great gaphics, and a huge map of...yeah you guessed it...Rome and Europe.
Punch Type: Knockout
Medium weights....or just complete divers:
Lord of the Rings Online - Being in development for quite some time now, LOTR online is being developed by Turbine, the creator of the AC franchise. Asheron's call was genius, but sadly the sequel did not pull through. LOTR looks a bit shaky, but still looks to do great. The sad part is the fact that there is no large scale PVP, as players will be fighting against the forces of Sauron.
Pirates of the Burning Sea - Everyone loves the idea of being a pirate, but this game has been in development for ages. Will they pull through, or pull through the floor and release a half completed game like DnL? Only time will tell.
Fury - It has a great concept of the "ultimate competitive MMO expierience" but didnt I hear that before? Guild Wars, anyone?
And there you have it, the complete overview of the future big boys that we're gonna see totally duke it out in the next 2 years. Currently I dont have a predicition of which will come out on top, however I will try to have one at a later date - right now i need more information. Theres so many and they all sound so good.
But the question is.
Which one will you choose?
Hope we all have a good discussion with minimal flaming.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steelarm
EDIT: Im sorry if another game isnt on the list, but it can only hold up 10. I picked games that have a high possibility of hitting a wide audience, and that are hyped and talked about the most. If ya feel strongly that another game should be on the list, then argue it here

Super Heavyweight = Vanguard:SoH Out of the three it'll be the 1st released and it actually does have some neet ideas and new features. Might not be for everyone but I feel EQ1 EQ2 DAoC subscribers are eyeing this one pretty heavily.
Heavyweight = Gods and Heroes I have a feeling this games gonna surprise a lot of people and actually be really damned good.
Medium Weight LoTR Online = Granted Turbine some how screwed up and ruined a great franchise name in D&D Online. Hopefully they learned from their mistakes and this one won't completely suck. I myself won't buy it at release but I will however keep my eye on it post release and if it's doing well and gets good reviews I'll pick it up. As a kid I loved The Hobbit and LoTR and the movies weren't bad either.
Also no Darkfall mention! That must be around medium weight.
i think AION should at least be somewhere in the list.
or have "none of the above" option to pick.
Since a poll can have up to 10 items, and some games had to be left off the list because of that, maybe you should have seperated the poll into 2 cataglories: Fantasy games(since there are enough of them lol) and Other. This way, with 2 seperate polls, you could have at least fit in all the major upcoming games.
Edit: BTW i believe the poll itself is a sound idea, even though the info provided is based on opinion more than fact. At least mention was given to some of the smaller titles that most know very little about.
it was about games being developed. Not ones that are already made and being played.
As for myself... I was torn between GnH and PotBS
That's one heck of a post/poll you got going on. Grats on all that .
But yeah, can't vote on anything that doesn't at least include The Chroicles of Spellborn. Personally, I think this is going to be a sleeper hit.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
Hmmm...proof that EVE players are blind in their fanaticism...never thought I'd see that here on EVE.c...I mean MMORPG.com
This poll is for upcoming games xpowderx...it might have come 3rd in the olympics...but it's also about that many YEARS OLD!
EDIT: I think the only real MMO-hit-possibility you left out is Spellborn, but I'm rapidly losing hope on that one myself...so...anyway, I voted W.A.R., though I think Conan is going to be great too (maybe a little too "actiony" judging by the gameplay vids I've seen).
And further proof that playing EVE allows you more time to surf MMORPG.com than any other pursuit...hehe
You obviously have terrible taste in MMORPG's. I'll glad I wont see you in Darkfall.
The poll can only hold up 10 items. Im not making a seperate poll becuase it will make it too complicated. I picked in my objective judgement and of others, the games that have the biggest chance to hit it big on the market.
Sadly Darkfall doesnt make it on the list because it appeals to a smaller audience. Plus, people are doubting that it will come through. Aion is still in early development, and Chronicles of Spellborn is simply not has hyped and talked about as other games (as with the rest of the other games in development). Sorry folks if youre game isnt up there, but you'll have to post it here.
But that isnt so bad

From the Poll Options I selected, Hero's Journey.
I'm also waiting for Fallen Earth.
Joined 2004 - I can't believe I've been a MMORPG.com member for 20 years! Get off my lawn!
Beyond that I think Darkfall, if it delivers on it's promises, will be the big surprise of the fantasy genre in 2007.
In the sci-fi arena keep an eye on Infinity... though it may go niche since it involves newtonian flight models.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
War Hammer all the way, for the same reason people think it won't work:
People think War Hammer won't be good because Mythic will screw up by nerfing everything to Oblivion and such. "I" think they have learned from their mistake (and proved it during the process of Daoc) and with their experience, War Hammer surely promise to be a very polished and balance game. Not to mention the king of all in the PvP (RVR) department.
People think EA will screw this up because they screwed everything up in the past. "I" personally think that this time, EA will stay in the back and the only effect it will have on War Hammer is the input of cash they will have to hire new people to work on the game and to advertise it properly.
I'm not doing a leap of faith here either... Haven't start to rebuild my guild yet for War Hammer, because i want to see much more from the beta. I went ape shit with WoW and had a huge guild 2 months before the release. It ended up being the biggest rip off i have ever played, with pretty much all feature that was promised for 2 years not being there. I left after 6 months and lost all that hard work and contacts.
So War Hammer will have to show me in the beta that they are where i want them to be for the release. I'm not going to buy a product or start building another strong community if they "again", ask me to wait for the next patch or next expansion...
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
You forget:
BioWare
Attack: Supernova!
Brace yourself, a REAL rpg company making a MMO at last, the world orbit might even change with that!
