Well, this is what I assumed happened, although I don't know for absolute certain. But given the fact the servers have been down for two days and counting, NCsoft's homepage message about security issues and that I had to change my Lineage 2 password, along with every other subsciber; signs point a major hacking assault, a major NCsoft screw up, or most likely both.
Now I'm going to watch very closely what is charged to me in the coming months. I hope, and would guess, my billing info wasn't taken. Still, this is yet another reason to be paranoid about identity theft.
Any news or greater insight about this situation would be welcome on this thread.

I'm gonna be a gamer girl without a game here soon.
..hax..
You make it sound like servers were continuously down. They weren't.
From what I can make out, the mini-patch we downloaded at the weekend wasn't actually from NCSoft, but from a malicious cracking group. Yes, I said cracking, and not hacking (I'm old enough to know the difference )
I'm sorry guys but what you have heard is not true at all! The truth is something else, BAD ADMINSTRATION and the NEW PATCH! Well i've had enough ,and like my few other friends , quiting. Good luck and hope you enjoy the one and only game that offers you ONLY the 4 or 5 following options :
LAG,DISCONNECTIONS,RAID BOSS,LVLING, SUCKY PVP
I definitely agree with your first point. They SHOULD have sent out an email. Then again, if their database was maliciously entered, that could possibly caused an added security risk.
I can't see how bots would be a security risk, but they're definitely a pain in the backside.
I don't know what happened, so I won't comment on the server downtime, but after experience with the game, I do know that the cheaters, bots, and so on were never dealt with to the satisfaction of many L2 players.
Although I would never wish a hack/crack or whatever upon a game, it would be fitting if this actually does turn out to be the cause of the downtime.
Now may be a good time to address these issues. Still, I doubt these exploits will be handled . . . from I could tell, it is the lifeblood of the game. It was everywhere and could not be avoided while I played.

Do you think that people realy care if you agree or disagree with them! Guess you have forgotten that you are a PARROT , with a nest in this forum just to read and reapet what others say ! You are just a forum BUG ! Hope you don't loose your feathers! lol
I'm off to play, enjoy your cage!
Errr.....OK.
And i did not say they should send emails. How about something on the official site/s. All NCSfot message boards are down. They are really not letting anyone know what is going on at all.
During
the investigation of the exploit that resulted in Monday’s unscheduled
maintenance, we discovered the existence of a possible security
vulnerability. As a result, the servers have been brought down to
address this issue. Additionally, all Lineage II game passwords have
been reset for security purposes to ensure the safety of your Lineage
II account. Please log into your PlayNC account immediately and change
the password to your Lineage II game account. This action is necessary
in order to log in to the game. You may also need to change your PlayNC
master account password as an additional precaution. We realize this is
an inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize.

PlayNC Support"
They are letting everyone know whats going on. They are getting wtfpwned in the butt, and they have announced it on their main site. http://lineage2.com/news/news.html#a007598Yes, I know exactly how they work.
The official site has had info on it from about an hour after the servers went down. Learn to read.

is not real satifying. Which password my plaync, my game client, my message board. I did contact support last night about 10PM EST and still have not heard back from them. the whole thing blows. If they were a bit more proactive they would not be suffering like they are now.
I posted this in another thread, but I guess I'll post it here as well.
Go to www.plaync.com and change either your game, master, or both passwords.
Try logging into L2.
If that doesn't work, try again in an hour or so.
If after that time you still can't log in, send in a support ticket.
For future, I'd recommend checking out www.l2blah.com if this happens again. If you can put up with the angry kids, you'll find good info on what's going on at any time
I payed hell trying to remember the exact way I typed in my secret question. My account was created in 2003
then I had to remember the format for my birthday
theres a LOT of folks who have multiple accounts and cannot reset their passwords because they cant remember the input
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
For those that complain about resetting your password. You actually should be resetting that every 3 months or so. And for those that can't log back in, that is because the account wasn't really yours. And what I say to them is good riddence, you shouldn't be spending tons of money to buy a "game account". YOU DO NOT NEED THE QUESTION, ALL YOU NEED IS UR BIRTHDAY, IF YOU DON'T
KNOW YOUR OWN BIRTHDAY YOU SHOULDN'T BE ON THE INTERENET, SORRY!
It was a bad way for them to do things. But I would have rather them do this than comprimise all our accounts.
~Greatness~
Currently Playing:
Nothing
because if what you say is true, then i REALLY hope that this gets fixed ASAP, and i wouldnt mind if the servers down for a day to fix something like this, i dont think i'd be enjoying my L2 if i knew that people now have capabilities to do such things. just imagine minding my own biz in the abandoned camps, happily huntin, and then suddenly BAM ! 180K dmg! lol .... yeah not good
This time around it was the same cracker and he did the same thing again on the C5 PTS. Except it wasn't to such the extent that it was last PTS.
Nothing happened on the official servers. They brought them down to possibly fix the exploit. But I think the current C4 Live servers were safe against that exploit, but they probally wanted to make double sure.
Then while fixing the exploit they noticed that there was a security vulnurabilty if someone had the same password for their game account as their PlayNC account. So they had to reset the passwords and fix the vulnurabilty.
Luckly nothing happend on Live Servers...or anything we can tell anyway. But I am sure they checked to see if someone had super enchanted gear, all the skills avaiable in game, and recieved impossible amounts of experience within the givin time frame. That is why the servers were down so long.
All in all, by best estimate is that Live servers are just fine, and there is nothing to worry about.
Waiting on Guild Wars 2
Here is few pictures from that C4 "EVENT"

I heard that it can be only done in PTS because SQL is in same comp.
