Get put to sleep. My friend had his wisdom teeth out while he was awake and he said that it was messy and hard to keep his mouth open. Well the fun part is the vicanine...he had extras and gave em to me wow was it fun.

I hope some day we can all put aside our racisms and prejudices and just laugh at people

I had my wisdom teeth out about a month before school got out. They numbed me up pretty bad, but I didn't go to sleep.

On a side note: After I got home, I made the mistake of waiting for it to start hurting before I took anything. It took forever for the Percocet they gave me to kick in, and I was a useless lump for about 40 minutes while I waited for it to kick in. It hurt so much. Just a friendly word of advise: When you get home, take your pills when you first feel the numbness wearing off. Otherwise, you'll be in more pain than you really want to deal with...

Oh, and good luck with getting your wisdom teeth out.

Huh, they just put this thing in my mouth to keep it open. I think it was, like, a metal spreader, or something.

The procedure itself is not the big deal.  It's the recovery.

if u are given enough local, u won't feel a thing, and u get to watch how the dentist does his job.  I like that sort of stuff, after all, if I am there, might as well observe, yeah?

I did it once, the procedure was a lot of fun.   The recovery not so much.

I remember gettin 1 of my bottom teeth pulled. They kept me awake and numbed me up and it wasnt all that bad. Just a little sting when they stick the needle in, and i didnt feel a thing when they worked the forceps. On a side note, it bleeds like HELL, so be prepared to stick a wad of kleenex in2 ur mouth.

Life is full of choices--dont make RS one of em

Are you put to sleep at the dentist over there?

  • NihilanthNihilanth Member Posts: 1,357

Pulling wisdom teeth is considering dental surgery, and almost any surgery in the U.S. has the option of being put to sleep.  Besides, if you REALLY wanted to, and you had a shit-load of money to bribe the dentists with, you could probably get put to sleep to have your teeth cleaned.

Just to make this clear, when you say put to sleep you mean totally right? You get a injection and fall to sleep.

Eeeek!!! That sucks, take good care of yourself either way.

I'm not sure whether sleeping or being awake is better, I do know that when my brother got his done he had a local and he said the procedure itself was no big deal, it was the few days aftewards that were really bad.

Just remember to get lots and lots of icecream, my brother went through tons.

Best of luck, lots of hugs and squeezes your way and like I said, take good care. Let us know how everything went.

Ah yes, our old friend the speculum.  Often used by OBGYNs and Proctologists.  I hope he took it out of the wrapper before he put it in your mouth.

Everyone is saying how bad the recovery is, but when I got mine pulled I took one pain pill when I got home and that was it, I didnt take anymore pain pills after that.  In fact I managed to eat some steak the next day, the only thing to really avoid is using straws, because it will pop the stitches and then you start bleeding like crazy.

After you get your teeth pulled out, make sure you don't get any food stuck in the gaps where the teeth used to be. I did, and the gums grew overtop of the food. A week later it burst and a bunch of puss seeped onto my toungue.

I drank a lot of those bottled "yogurt shake" things. They were good... I want another... Anyway, those "Campell's Soup At Hand" things worked out fairly well for me as well. I'd recommend both of those things.

The swlling was suchwhen I got mine yanked, that I could really bite down without it hurting. Like, a lot.

to those outside of the US:

Yes, they are talking about total anesthesia. Literally going into unconsciousness.

I was suprised to learn they do that here myself when I first heard of it.

What you do is just stay up and don't sleep for a day or two before the appointment, when you go in, make sure they give you Nitrous Oxide, after that, you'll pretty much be able to just fall asleep and you won't care what they're doing to you.

Also note that I'd recommend staying away from any non-prescribed drugs beforehand because if the dentist gives you something it could react badly if you're been taking drugs recreationally

I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled in about two weeks.  I want to be put to sleep.  I don't want to have any clue what they are doing or what is going on.  I want to wake up and have it be all over.  Although, I hear you're pretty out of it for quite awhile after the procedure is done.  Oh yeah, and percocet rocks.  Made my head spin when I took it after my wrist surgery!  lol

pretty wimpy if you have to be asleep. But everyone's different. I've been told by doctors I have a high pain tolerance. WHen I got mine out I was awake, I got all four out. Bottom two came in crooked so He had to use the drill and slice em in half pull out one half then move the other over then take that out. THat was painful I guess. Sort of just a weird feeling. But ya recovery is the bad part. I just chilled in front of my computer lookin like a chipmunk.
