Good 2D MMOs?

SvennEthirSvennEthir Member UncommonPosts: 21

I've played all the major MMOs from EQ to WoW, and everything in between. I'm looking for something to do in downtime. One of my favorite MMOs of all times is The Realm. The best 2D MMO I've ever seen. I'm looking for something comparable without being a direct copy. Are there any 2D MMOs out there that are any good?

There was this 2-d (korean I think) mmorpg that I beta tested a long time ago and wouldnt mind finding it again...revolved around character development and using an arsenal of guns...and it isnt Gunz.

Ragnarok Online isn't really a 2D game, it has 2D characters on 3D maps but it almost looks and plays exactly like a 2D game. Without a doubt still the best 2D MMORPG out there (Imo). I spend 2 years on it and loved every minute of it.

I probably should have specified that I played UO a little back when it was first released, and I've played a couple times since, and every time I can't get more than a few minutes in to it without getting incredibly bored with the whole concept.

Aye, I just found out that I was doing a no-no .  I will apologies here as well, as I wasn't trying to break the code, just trying to point him in the right direction.

There are two kinds of mmorpg players...
    One kind is the hunter,
    The other is the hunted.
    Which one are you?

There is an Edit key to the right on your posts.

Aye, the addy is gone from my original response.  Would hate to get booted for trying to help out.

Ooooh someone else on this forum that actually played The Realm . Can't think of anything similar to that, although I'd love to see another MMO pull off turn based instanced fighting, console rpg style, I always loved that in The Realm, and it'd be nice if someone agreed with me

Thanks. I'm looking at the site now, it looks like the combat system is a simple point and click. Sounds a little like Diablo. How many different types of skills are there?

Also, I'm not a huge fan of asian MMOs. I'm not sure why, I just can't get in to them. Certain elements, like the player "shops" (the people that just sit in town that you can buy from), and some other things turn me off to most. I'm willing to try any of course.

Another thing I'd like to try is a game with a different type of combat system, a nice turn based system, or something totally different, whether it be 2d or 3d.

I definitely agree with you. It was a TON of fun. I find myself going back to it once a year or so just to get the feel again. I'd love to play something with a similar style of play. Something that's more strategy based and less twitch based. There were a lot of little elements in The Realm that I loved that I have yet to see other games duplicate, and it makes me sad. I guess I'll have to make one myself.

I think a 2D MMO with a fun/challenging combat system, a good skill system, and good itemization would be a lot more fun than half the 3D MMOs out there today.

I'm going to recommend Dofus. It's got turn-based strategic combat, if I remember right. I don't normally like strategic battles, but I think they pulled it off quite well. It's 2D, and it's fun. I only ever did the free trial thing, but if you're looking for a good 2D MMORPG, that's where I suggest you start. Yeah, the characters are a little small, but you'll get used to it.
