DeserttFoxxDeserttFoxx Member UncommonPosts: 2,402

I just got this email from Killer NIC advertising their network card, that is suppoed to be the ultimate tech for gamers is read and for sale, here are some of the links showing the preformance increases, they use world of warcraft and quake 4, and it only shows 8% is that worth 300 dollars. I dont think so.

    The soapboxfactory links dont work.

$300 for a network card? If it made coffee also, maybe.

Any game I play, I get double digit ping, usually ranging between 60-80. Spending $300 for an 8% boost is silly in my case. Now if the card was like $30-50, maybe. But as it is now, I have no use for a card like that, especially at that price.

Sorry, Jello. The base model will only make Julian Fries. You'll have to pay $500 for the "Coffee" model. Don't even get me going on the "Espresso" and "Back Massage" models.

Seriously, though. I get roughly 80-100 ping on the games I play. So $300 for roughly 74-92 ping, sure, and monkies fly out of Methane's butt.

Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

WHAT?! $300 are you out of your mind for a crappy NIC card, wow I would spend tops $40-50 on it no chance in hell $300 and I get perfect ping as it is.

    From thier "About us" page:

" While in business school at the University of Texas, Harlan teamed up with Bob Grim and Mike Cubbage to found Bigfoot Networks. Together they wrote an award winning business plan that won prizes in the Fortune Magazine New Venture contest, the University of Texas MOOT CORP Competition, San Diego State’s Venture Challenge, and the Carnegie Mellon competition.

The prize money combined with Angel investment allowed Harlan to further refine the technology and for Bigfoot Networks to build its first prototype, which was critical in securing a $4MM investment from Venio Capital Partners in late 2005.

Financially secure, Bigfoot Networks has now launched full throttle on its mission to fight Lag and provide gamers with technology that can dramatically improve the performance of their gaming systems. Stay tuned for more details on its upcoming product launch (this summer), and other ways that Bigfoot Networks is going to make gaming more fun. "

If this is their only product, this "award winning business plan" should last about one year before it closes it's doors.

It's not that bad plan. I mean look at those newb kidz buying mouses and keyboards for 50euros, mousepads for 30 euros. Why? Becouse they want to be pr0. Once they get fatality using one of these they will be selling big tome.

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

The only way to increase your ping is to obtain a better internet connection...not buy a better NIC. I mean for gods sakes...::::12::

I agree that your ping isn't going to be affected too much (hense the 8%), but from the way this sounds it makes highest priority of the game for your computer.

So I'd expect that games run smoother giving slower loading times and better "twitch" reaction. I think it will show the most with people who run multiple programs while playing games such as voice and messenger programs.

If I played FPS games I'd probably buy this card, but as it is now I doubt I'll get it. Perhaps a little down the road when the price goes down a bit.

The poll should have an option "this is snake oil for suckers"

I have a 100mb network connected to a cable modem. The ISP gives me between 4mb and 6mb speed. Where do you think the bottleneck lies?

Maybe as they claim they can take incoming ICMP challenge packets and respond to them without involving the OS or the main CPU. However, that has nothing what so ever to do with the UDP packets which the game software creates on its own. Maybe they can handle fragmentation and reassemble for IP and for TCP but that would only help for downloading updates. And nothing they can do will speed up the pipe one gets from his ISP. Nothing they can do will fix your ISP's routers, server, and other devices when they are down or slow.

    $300 snake oil I say.

Anyone who buys one of these feel free to ask me about my $30 emergency CD tray opening device I will sell you. Don't panic if it looks like a paperclip with one leg bent out.

I would love to see if Tom's has a review.
